Benet and Waubonsie Valley
want to lose that losing feeling
Seek to bounce back from first setbacks of season

Benet and Waubonsie Valley both lost for the first time Saturday (Sept. 6).
In fact, both teams fell victim to Naperville Central during the Best of West tournament.
The Redhawks overwhelmed Waubonsie Valley, which was able to only produce three shots in a 4-0 morning loss.
“I think (Naperville) Central wanted it more than we did and they took advantage of that,” Warriors coach Jose Garcia said. “Central is a very good technical team that transitions very fast. Our transitions could’ve been faster, and it’s something we’re definitely going to be working on.”
Benet Academy (4-1) had some initial success in the evening’s championship game. The Redwings enjoyed a 1-0 lead at intermission, but couldn’t hold on as the hosts rallied for a 3-1 victory.
“We hadn’t seen anybody like that this year,” Benet coach Sean Wesley said. “We played 12 bad minutes of soccer and then got underneath it and were chasing the game.”
Still, Wesley liked what he saw from his team despite the loss.
“I think for the first time this year we played pretty good soccer, and we had to because they’re a great team,” he said. “So to stay in a game and being in the flow and creating chances, we had to play good soccer and we did.”
Now that they’ve put Naperville Central behind them, the teams have had a few days to recover both physically and mentally as well as work on some things that may have been exposed against those same Redhawks.
“We talked about that game being a wake-up call, and we had a couple confidence games at the beginning,” Garcia said. “We’ve now got some big teams coming up, some very good teams, so we need to prepare and we need to get better starting (Thursday).”
Joey Braun and Henry Zehmal have led Waubonsie Valley, and they’ll look to slow a very good Benet Academy midfield and attack.
“Benet’s always been a very physical team and a very good technical team,” Garcia said. “Combined, that makes you tough, no matter what sport you’re playing, but especially in soccer.”
The Warriors will be up against it as they try to break a two-game losing streak. Waubonsie Valley started the season 3-0-1, but dropped its last two game including at 2-1 home loss to West Aurora Tuesday night.
Benet Academy all-state forward Kyle Kenagy continues to score goals regularly, which was expected after the great success he’s had throughout his standout career. The biggest additions for the Redwings seem to be sophomore Connor Mote and freshman Artur Pach, both newcomers to the program.
Pach had his first high school goal and added two assists in Benet Academy’s 3-0 win over Neuqua Valley on Thursday (Sept. 4).
Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
