BUFFALO GROVE -- Thursday night was one to remember for the Barrington.
The Fillies (21-1-0) claimed their sixth-straight MSL Soccer Bowl trophy and 10th in program history. The league championship was the eighth for manager Ryan Stengren and came in the form of a 2-0 victory over host Buffalo Grove at Grant Blaney Stadium.
"This is quite an achievement for these girls, who began working very hard way back in late October, (early) November to reach the goal of winning here tonight," said Stengren. "But they know this is only the first of a handful of other goals ahead of they want to go after.
Senior Anna Brodjian scored her 13th of the season for yet another game-winner in the 2017 campaign. Classmate Maesyn Poidomani added further gloss to the Fillies' record-breaking triumph when she closed out the Bison for good at 64 minutes.
"It's all kind of amazing to think as seniors we've been a part of four-straight championships," said Poidomani, who now has three goals in the MSL Soccer Bowl. Last year she scored the game-winner during another 2-0 victory over the Bison.
The Fillies, who wasted three glorious early chances, finally come alive after the break when Brodjian headed the first goal in from near the spot on a brilliant cross from Sophia Spinell, who recorded her 20th assist of the season on the 50th minute goal.
"Anna could miss an entire year and step out onto the field and score a big goal for us," said Spinell after the Fillies defeated rival Fremd 1-0 on May 3 on Brodjian's second half game-winner.
Spinell's reference to her teammate centered around Brodjian's six-game absence at the start of the season. She missed time due to offseason surgery, yet has bounced back by leading the Fillies in goals.
At the intermission, the MSL honored its 2017 all-conference players in the center of the park. Jackie Batliner and Spinell were named the Mid-Suburban League West Division's co-Players of the Year. It was Batliner's second-consecutive honor. Buffalo Grove senior Georgette Topalis was also a repeat winner for East Division honors.
Poidomani ended the scoring with a wicked 22-yard cracker from the right side that nested firmly into the back of the net at 66 minutes. Ellie Stodola and Michayla Herr earned assists on the play.
Batliner, Haley Tausend, Kayla Keck and Madi Simon, the Fillies Rock of Gibraltar defensive unit all season long, aided Samantha Schmitz' 16th clean sheet of the season.
"No other team has ever done what we've done before, so we'll all enjoy it tonight, then put it behind us until later because we've got a lot of work to do before regionals," said the senior Keck.
Barrington meets 16th-seed Zion-Benton, a 3-0 winner over no. 17-seed Wheeling on Friday, in the Class 3A Mundelein Regional semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
