Speed leads to Barrington victory
Pirie's run, pass assists Broncos in 1-0 win over Glenbrook North

NORTHBROOK - There's a lot of speed with the young group of players that are on Barrington's soccer team this season.
Let's start with Nash Pirie, a junior, who can run with the best of them. His efforts from his outside back spot led the way for the game-winning goal in the first couple of minutes on Tuesday night.
Barrington held on to open the season with a 1-0 shutout over host Glenbrook North in the 8th annual CSL/MSL Challenge.
Pirie has a bit of experience when it comes to running. He ran on Barrington's 4 X 800 relay team this spring, and the quartet recorded the 12th best time in the country during the season.
"I think my speed helps a lot to run up and down the field," Pirie said. "I can do it the whole game and not get tired from it,"
His coach Scott Steib is well aware of how fast he can be.
"I know this kid can fly," Steib said. "He's one of the kids that was with us last year. He's one of our outside backs."
Pirie set up the game-winner with a run from the back. His cross found Hans Pallan, who put away the goal.
"We split the ball to Nash (Pirie) out wide. He played a great ball into the middle, and I was able to tap it in," Pallan said. "We do a lot in practice for the wingers to bring the ball in from the wide side. Practicing made it easier."
Defensively, Pirie is part of a young group on the back line that includes fellow juniors Josh Coulter, John Gadbois and Braeden Nelson. They made things much easier for junior keeper Alex Ruffolo who made 6 stops for the clean sheet.
"It wasn't the prettiest game ever for the first game of the season," Pirie added. "It was a lot of kickball, but we came through. Our defense, we need to trap it more and hold it in the back.
"It all starts in the back, passing up front with crisp passes but we kicked it a lot. We can work on that because we've got a solid group of guys. We're good as a team and click well. If we work at things in practice, we should have a solid season."
Barrington returns this season with just three seniors and many younger underclassman. But for their first game, they appeared to be further along then they expected to be.
"We just have six guys back from last year," Steib said. "We did have some pretty heavy loses. I think we're alright. We're green, and we haven't been through any of this before. So the first game, you have to get one game under your belt.
"I thought it was a good game, and I thought both teams could play and were organized. We had a good sequence at the beginning with both players back from last year. They are putting a stamp on the season right away."
Glenbrook North had a good start against a quality program and got an indication of where they are as a team.
Despite the early goal, the Spartans managed to pull things together the rest of the way and tried to attack to find the equalizer.
"I would like to have a couple more minutes to see if we can get that equalizer," said Jackson Grabill, who played in the Glenbrook North midfield. "I thought there were good things and some bad things. Obviously, that's going to come from our first game. We've got to learn from those, come back for our next one and correct them."
Grabill was one of the midfielders who tried to start the attack for the Spartans. There were some connections that came close at times in the second half.
"We're definitely getting our opportunities when we're coming up the field," Grabill added. "I think we've got to capitalize on them with good shots. Our passes were good at times. The main thing to work on is getting numbers up the field and get the outside backs into the attack."
Glenbrook North enters the season as a young team. They have a lot of growing to do, but the effort showed what they're capable of against a good program.
"We're still trying to find our identity," Glenbrook North coach Paul Vignocchi said. "This was a great test for us against a very good Barrington team. We have a very tough schedule. We're going to grow as the season goes on.
"I was proud of our second half effort. We started to figure some things out, and it got better. Barrington was fast all over the field. We were trying to penetrate some gaps. We couldn't click or connect our passes. A lot of credit goes to them with their organization in the back."
