Deerfield finds way

Hinds comes off bench to beat hosts in big CSL North contest

NORTHBROOK - There seems to be a lot more to offer when players come off the bench these days for Deerfield.
Collin Hinds was one of several players who gave a helpful touch for the Warriors on Monday night. That included his foot for the game-winning goal for Deerfield in a big 1-0 Central Suburban League North Division win over host Glenbrook North.
"It really gave us a huge lift and a lot of momentum," said Hinds, who earned Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honors with his first goal of the season. "It allowed us to keep our momentum for the rest of the game and allowed us to win.
"The bench is just as much as part of the team. When we come in we have to work just as hard. It's like we're starting on the field, and it's not much different."
For the Warriors (9-2-2, 1-0-1), the rivalry win puts them on the inside track for the league title. Glenbrook North (7-3-3, 3-1) has to wait and see what happens.
The Spartans host their remaining league game against Maine West on Wednesday. The Warriors host Maine East on Tuesday, with road games at Niles North on Thursday and Maine West next Monday night.
Hinds' goal came in the 33rd minute after a combination of passes. The final set-up came from fellow reserve Andrew Simo.
"We do have a very deep bench," Deerfield coach Elliott Hurtig said. "We're just hoping for guys like Collin step up. We've got a lot of talent on the bench. We're waiting for guys to really step up and make plays happen."
Both teams showed heart and determination on both sides of the ball for the full 80 minutes. While Deerfield walked off the pitch with the result, Glenbrook North had its share of chances throughout the match.
"It's a big win for us obviously, but after the first half we could've been down 2-0," Deerfield coach Elliott Hurtig said. "We were surprisingly really flat and (Glenbrook North) was taking it to us. They were winning the 50/50 balls and won a lot of the challenges.
"They had a lot of chances and just couldn't finish. Looking up at the scoreboard up seeing us up 1-0 was very surprising. We got totally outplayed."
For whatever reason on this evening, Glenbrook North just couldn't put one past the goal line. There were at least four really good opportunities for the Spartans.
"We couldn't get a goal," Glenbrook North coach Paul Vigocchi said. "Our guys worked hard, we had our chances. We just couldn't finish it. That was the result.
"Sometimes the soccer gods aren't nice. That was a perfect example in this one. I think we had a great opportunity, they worked hard in that aspect. And now we just have to wait and see (what happens in the league race).
"I think we competed out here, and it's the opportunity to finish. We've got to be healthy and find our rhythm again. Our forwards did a nice job, but I think (Deerfield) controlled the midfield. I thought our backs did a nice job handling the pressure from their midfield play. I thought we had the better of the play in the attacking third. From the middle third they had the better play."
Glenbrook North played without a couple of starting midfielders. Ryan Golde and Eli Dryer each missed the game because of injuries.
On a couple of occasions the Deerfield defense had lapses where Glenbrook North thought they would break through in the first half. But give some credit to the Warriors' defense of Evan Gerke, Levi Goldstein, Michael Such, Will Schmetterer and keeper Leo Kolidkin (6 saves).
"(Glenbrook North) had some chances," Such said. "Once we scored, we were able to dig in defensively and withstand the pressure. They were playing a lot of long balls in the second half. We stood up and won a majority of them. There was a big momentum shift in the game."
Glenbrook North had their best chance to tie the match in the 68th minute. Spartan Robbie Fraser had his sites set for an open net with the Deerfield netminder out of position. But on the shot that was struck for the low inside post, the Warriors' Goldstein laid out to make a game-saving stop that knocked the ball away.
"I just saw the guy wind-up," defender Goldstein said. "I just threw my body in front of the ball. I was in the game and wanted to help the team."
Glenbrook North didn't stop the pressure and kept attacking for the remainder of the match, but they couldn't find a good scoring opportunity for the equalizer.
"It meant a lot for conference and one of our biggest rivals," said Glenbrook North defender Seth Grossman. "We really wanted this one. It was a rough one. We came out fired up. We let an unlucky one in, and we controlled most of the game. We could've put one of those opportunities in. We just have to come back in our next game."
