Deerfield attack too much for Maine West
Juniors Linn and Cappas lead way in 8-1 win

DES PLAINES -- Deerfield threw down the gauntlet at their foes from Maine West and went on to prove their mettle with an 8-1 Central Suburban League North Division victory Tuesday night.
The Warriors attacking midfield duo of Samantha Linn and Chloe Cappas claimed each of Deerfield's five first half goals -- Cappas notched a hat-trick and Linn claimed a brace with goals just four minutes apart.
"We had to come together as a team," said Linn about a Deerfield skid that resulted in losses in five-of-seven games. "It was important for us to improve our communication, bond both on and off the field. And I really feel the entire team understood, because we've played much better as a team, and individually since."
Deerfield (8-6-3, 2-2-0) signaled its intent from the opening whistle. Cappas struck just inside the nine-minute mark to cap a strong start that saw the junior involved in the first three quality chances at Maine West keeper Gabri Faraone. The fourth saw Cappas carry freely into the box from the right side before finding the back of the net.
Five minutes later Cappas doubled the advantage. This time, with the help of teammates Malori Killoren and Erin Rosenzweig, she pried open the Maine West defense with some quick touches and nifty combination work.
A marvelous early ball from Linn found Marissa Hyland on the tail end of a well-timed left-to-right diagnoal run - and if not for a strong effort by Faraone, the sophomore would have made it 3-0.
"Our passing game has really improved in the last 3-4 games," said Linn, whose energy, pace and industry in the middle of the park earned her Chicagoland Soccer's MVP of the Match honor.
The Warriors by all rights should have added two-to-three more goals before Linn made it 3-0 just after the half hour. The quartet of Killoren, Hyland, Linn and Rosenzweig were at the center of all the trouble the visitors created.
Killoren and Hyland worked a nice 1-2 combination to put Warriors freshman Killoren into the box. However a sharp tackle from Maine West's Sarah Magnoni ended that chance.
"Our overall play in our attack has been much better since our loss to Glenbrook North (April 18)," said Haley Emory, who manager Rich Grady praised prior to the contest for her versatility and ability to play both in the midfield and along the back without missing a step.
The silky smooth Emory was in Grady's first 11 for the contest, but she was slotted on the backline with teammates Molli Goodman, Kat Stanaszek and Julia Harlan. But the junior's fluid play and enterprising runs out of the defending third, along with quality distribution, spurred a move to the midfield that made the Deerfield attack much more dangerous from the 18th minute forward.
"Yes, we struggled in the game with GBN, but there's a great mix of players and talent on this team. We've put all of that behind us and the results so far have been really good," said Emory.
Deerfield continued to pressure and didn't allow Maine West (4-9-1, 0-4-0) to get out of its own end.
Linn's first goal shook the woodwork from 22 yards and then fell over the line for the 3-0 lead at the 31-minute mark. She followed up four minutes later with her second when Hyland put her through.
The assistant referee threw Deerfield a lifeline, albeit a correct one, when he raised the flag on a Maine West goal by freshman Dylan VanFleet, who was just off when she thumped a header in a few minutes later.
The scoreline went to 5-0 at the break when Cappas completed her hat-trick just seconds before intermission.
"What a terrible start for us tonight," said a disappointed Jeff Bishop, the Maine West manager. "The girls knew what we were up against tonight. (Deerfield) is very well coached, and has some very good players. But to come out this slow and flat means you're just asking for it."
Grady brought on Rachel Levin, Devyn Compisi, Mirelle Haas and Ashley Morgan after the break to get them minutes, and the junior Levin didn't waste any time before she tested Faraone.
On a counter, Rosenzweig made it 6-0. But at the same time the senior was going past Faraone, the Maine West duo of Magnoni and Meghan Paluch suffered injuries way back at the midline.
Magnoni popped up after about a minute on the ground but not Paluch, who would require assistance when coming off.
Grady asked the referee to take the goal away from his club, suggesting play could have been stopped prior to Rosenzweigs' finish. When the action resumed after the goal, Deerfield showed first-rate sportsmanship by allowing Maine West's Julia Deac to go untouched into the Deerfield end before scoring the lone goal of the night for the home side.
"That was a real class move from Rich and his team," Bishop said.
Deerfield came alive with one last rampant display of attacking soccer to put two more in: one from Hyland, and final goal coming from Killoren, her eighth of the season.
"Chloe had a great game for us. She showed so much finesse and speed in our attack, and so did Marissa. (She) was unselfish, and had so many great runs up the side all throughout the game," said Linn.
Emory chose Stanaszek and junior Karly Morris as two who stood out for Deerfield in the big win.
"Karly had another good night, and has real consistent for us, while (Kat), who usually isn't lined up along our backline, was a real difference maker tonight."
The Warriors have won five of their last six games and hope to continue their streak on the road tonight (Wednesday) at Vernon Hills in a CSL North contest before hosting Libertvyille at noon Saturday.
