Deerfield celebrates win over Grant
Birthday girl Rosenzweig leads the way in 5-0 win

FOX LAKE -- Presents are fitting on your birthday. Erin Rosenzweig got the gift of a goal and an assist that she shared with her Deerfield teammates on Saturday.
The senior celebrated her 18th birthday by scoring the first goal of the game and led the Warriors (4-5-3) to a 5-0 nonconference win over Grant.
"It's a great birthday present," said Rosenzweig, who earned Chicagoland Soccer's MVP of the Match honors. "To see us win after a couple of hard losses this week (4-0 vs. Glenbrook North on April 18 and 1-0 to Highland Park on April 20). It was good to get a refreshing win no matter who the team was."
Rosenzweig, who plays up-top for the Warriors knows that there things the team needs to do in the upcoming matches ahead of them.
"I think we need to play up to our capabilities," she said. "We're a really good team when we want to be and when we really want it. We haven't been showing that we want it all the time. Because we're missing 50/50 balls. not going in for the headers. We just have to show we want it and to do it."
On Saturday, Rosenzweig got the ball rolling for Deerfield in the fifth minute.
A Warriors corner kick opportunity found Mirelle Haas, who put a point-blank header on frame. Grant keeper Lexi Werve (12 saves) made a great save, but the ball stayed in play. Rosenzweig saw the opportunity and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Warriors lead.
"We always talk about not to stop unless the ball is in the net or out (of bounds)," Rosenzweig said. "So I just kept going, I didn't want it to go wide or over my head. So I had to put my foot in there and kick it in!"
Deerfield had numerous chances to score in the first half, but couldn't convert on any more. Grant (0-4-2) contributed to the Warriors frustration with some pretty good defense for the first 40 minutes and trailed only 1-0 at the half.
"I was happy with what we did here today," Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. "We kept the ball out of our net, and we were solid defensively. I thought we passed the ball well and started to connect. We've been emphasizing that instead of sending balls over the top and have people chasing.
"Our first goal, the point of emphasis is finishing our set pieces. Second goal we had a nice passing sequence. Third goal was another passing sequence. I was very happy with the way we played."
The Warriors created combinations that found paydirt four times in the second half. Rosenzweig hooked up with Malori Killoren who sent a shot from up-top under the crossbar in the 52nd minute.
From off the bench, Haley Emory scored two minutes later after a Lauren Goodsnyder set-up to build a 3-0 margin.
The Warriors' Kat Stanaszek netted a goal off a pass from Devyn Compisi in the 65th minute that made the score 4-0.
Emory assisted for the final goal in the 75th minute; she set up Marissa Hyland.
"It's definitely discouraging a little bit sitting there," Emory said. "But once you come in you have to give 100 percent and show you need to be out there. You need to show what you can bring to the team and work together. It's a team effort.
"We definitely have our ups and downs. But ultimately when we get the ball on the ground and play the feet, find through-balls, we have a lot of speed. There's a lot of good players on this team."
Deerfield has had some struggles with scoring this season -- four of its five losses have come via shutout. That's something the Warriors will need to improve on moving forward.
"We've had opportunities," said Haas, who plays in the Warriors midfield. "We've been shooting a lot in practice. Sometimes the ball is hard to bring down. It's also hard for the forwards to finish and for people to control the ball. I definitely believe we've got to find feet more and put the ball on the ground. That will be the key to scoring more."
Grant put forth a good game plan in the match. The Lady Bulldogs sat back defensively, forcing Deerfield to send the ball forward in the first half. The difference was a few defensive mistakes for Grant and more Deerfield offensive control in the second half.
"Deerfield was a good team," Grant coach Michael Kennedy said. "I told our girls don't make anything easy for them. I thought we pestered them a little bit, and I was proud of the effort with the way they went to the ball and challenged the 50/50 balls."
Deerfield will look to break into the win column in its third Central Suburban League North Division game when its hosts Maine East at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday before taking part in the Glenbrook Cup next weekend.
