Deerfield unable to escape doldrums
Warriors fall 4-0 to visiting Glenbrook North in CSL debut

DEERFIELD -- Olivia Kosla's thunderous strike lit up an already surging Glenbrook North in what concluded as a 4-0 victory in favor of the visitors over host Deerfield in the conference opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at Adams Field.
The Spartans sophomore took aim from just inside the box and found the back of the net with an outstanding 56th-minute left-footed cracker, deservingly adding to Samantha Cramin's opener in the fifth minute for Glenbrook North (5-2-3, 1-0-0).
"Our second half tonight might have been thte best 40 minutes of soccer we've played thus far," said Spartans manager Craig Loch. "We were especially good in the attack, and for that matter, our play from front-to-back was strong for most of the night."
Deerfield (3-4-3, 0-1-0) has not had the start to the season if may have expected after finishing second in Class 2A last season and earning the school's first soccer trophy.
"We've got to continue to show a lot of patience right now as we're going through a little bit of a rough stretch," said senior, Erin Rosenzweig, a key figure in the 2016 success story.
"We have 6-7 seniors back, but we also have a lot of girls who are playing with the varsity for the first time, so the adjustment period is taking a little bit of time, so that's why it's important for us to stay positive, and like I said patient with each other and the team," added the senior, who will attend the University of Illinois next fall.
While not enjoying the run of play as much as its guests during the first quarter hour, the home side still showed some flair and creativity in its attack.
Freshman, Malori Killoren, who ran the show for the Warriors from the middle of the park like a veteran, combined with Devyn Compisi to give Mirelle Haas a chance from 24 yards that forced Glenbrook North keeper Ellie Scott to make a save in the ninth minute.
The Spartans made the most of a handful of first half opportunities as they showed their intent as the first half unfolded with the attacking trio of Cramin, Kosla and Victoria Caparos usually at the heart of it all.
Deerfield keeper Karley Morris stopped Cramin and thanked her backline for stepping up to deny Cramin from getting a chance in close when Caparos sent her through.
The Warriors backline, led by seniors Molli Goodman and Julia Harlan, and junior Ashley Morgan, proved watertight at times despite conceding the early goal to Cramin.
"Overall, I think our play along the back was pretty good all night, but when we gave them some time and space, they took advantage of it," said Goodman.
The aforementioned Killoren continued to do her part from her spot as a central mifielder, providing a wonderful early ball to Rosenzweig at 29 minutes which required Scott to race far off her line to clear. Before the break she did it again, initiating play with Rosenzweig once again whose deadly diagonal ball caused the Glenbrook North duo of Emily Porta and Maggie Oliphant a nervous moment.
"I thought at times we did some really good things with our attack, but we were not as sharp as we need to be. Plus our timing was off a little bit in the final third," opined Rosenzweig.
Glenbrook North got what it expected from its hosts.
"When you're playing a CSL rival, you always expect a tough night regardless of who your playing," offered Loch. "And I felt that Deerfield was dangerous at times, especially in the first half, but when our defense stepped up after the half, and got involved more going forward, it was then we had a lot of the play."
It was the dynamic play of the Spartans outside backs, Alyssa Nekritz and Melissa Tucker who helped define the attack of the visitors, and with the young threesome of Caparos, Kosla and Cramin playing the role of the architects, it was only a matter of time before Glenbrook North found a way to unlock a stingy Warriors defense.
"When those three are playing at full speed, they can truly be a dangerous bunch to handle," said Loch.
Deerfield opened the second half brightly and put the Spartans under pressure from the onset, thanks in part to the usual suspects, Killoren, Haas, and Rosenzweig, as well as junior, Samantha Linn, who provided plenty of pace and energy on the outside.
Lovely work by her teammates sprung Haas free for a go on frame but her shot went just over the bar in the 49th minute. Shortly thereafter, Compisi and Killoren exchanged nifty passes with each other, ending with Haas once again testing Scott.
That terrific sequence of play was the last the Warriors were able to put together during the next ten minutes, which were dominated by the visitors, who soon doubled their advantage when Kosla drove home her attempt.
Things would get worse later on when Cramin put more distance between the two sides with a nice finish from the near endline.
In between, Deerfield's Riley Halpern went close just moments after the junior was brought on in the 63rd minute.
Glenbrook North ended the scoring in the 73rd minute.
"We've got to keep our heads high, and stay away from negative thoughts and comments, it will be the best way for us to break out of this," echoed both Goodman and Rosenzweig.
