Deerfield offense breaks away from Lakes
Despite layoff, Warriors light up scoreboard again in 5-1 win

DEERFIELD -- After enjoying some time off for spring break, Deerfield didn't see much practice time outside of their warm-up for its nonconference game against Lakes on Friday afternoon.
After some slow play the Warriors shrugged off the cobwebs and put together another strong scoring output in a 5-1 victory.
The Warriors (7-1-0), who sit in the no. 13 spot in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, had been off nine days since they won their Central Suburban League North Division and Township High School District 113 rival Highland Park 4-1.
"Philosophically, I know and believe it's a break for them," Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. "They just needed a little physical and mental downtime. Their serious-enough athletes that I know they won't lose their minds for a week. It was exciting to see them get back to playing again."
Deerfield, which has rarely had to worry about a lack of scoring this season, flexed its offensive muscle again with its sixth game producing three or more goals. After eight games in the current campaign, the Warriors have put the ball into the back of the net 27 times, more than twice as much as they did in the same opening span last year.
Leading the way is sophomore Malori Killoren with eight goals. She is followed by seniors Haley Emory (6) and Samantha Linn (4).
"It's been very balanced scoring, and it's not any one person," Grady said. "Obviously, Malori (Killoren) has a lot of goals, Samantha (Linn) has a bunch of goals, Haley Emory our holding midfielder has the second most goals on the team. A lot of people are getting opportunities, and that's good. We're not a very predictable team to defend, because we have a lot of players who can shoot and score.
On the flip side, Grady is not as content.
"We're not as predictable as I'd like to see on the defensive end. If you want to see goals come see one of our games," said Grady of his team, which has surrendered 11 goals. "There's a lot of stuff going on both ways. We still have a lot of work going on defensively."
On Friday, Deerfield had a collective scoring effort once again. Killoren and Chloe Cappas each scored a brace. Killoren added an assist and Linn had a goal and an assist.
Linn has been part of the strength up-top and one of the senior leaders for the Warriors. Her effort in the win led her to Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honors.
"We really have a good thing going, because we read each other really well," Linn said, "Without having to vocalize it, Haley (Emory), she sees it, or I see it. We both know where it's going. It really works well for us. I always know there will be room to score, but Chloe (Cappas) or another center forward will be right there to knock it in (on a pass).
"I think the scoring has been exciting for all of us. It has definitely come from a lot of hard work, practices and the games. We're always on our toes right there on top of the defense. It's an effort of every single forward on the team to ensure no matter who is in or when, we're on top of the defense ready to be there for every ball. It's super fun and amazing scoring."
Deerfield offense didn't waste much time against Lakes.
Linn set up the first goal with a move to the end line and sent it back to the near post to Cappas, who slotted a shot just inside the iron for a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
"It was a great ball from Haley (Emory) in the gap," Linn added. "I ran on it, and I was able to get it back to Chloe (Cappas). She was exactly where she was supposed to be and had a really strong finish."
Linn followed up with the second goal in the 19th minute. She took the ball away from a Lakes defender with high pressure and converted.
Lakes (0-5-0) got a goal back off a set piece in the 30th minute. The Eagles' Hannah Morway delivered a corner kick right into the penalty area. Riley Beggs put her head on it and scored.
Deerfield, with the aide of a strong wind behind them, opened up the game in the second half.
Killoren sent a pass into the box for Cappas, who put the ball inside the post past Lakes keeper Molly Bakrins for a 3-1 advantage in the 45th minute.
Then Killoren finished the scoring with goals in the 54th minute, off a pass from Shayna Wood, and the 61st after a Marissa Hyland helper in the 61st minute.
"Happy to get the game in and happy with the result," Grady said. "We had a better second half. We had to deal with the wind on corner kicks. (Lakes) finished their goal very well on a nice header. I thought we had some nice goals."
Lakes worked hard to hang with Deerfield as long as it could. However, the Eagles are a younger team compared to a year ago.
"I thought we had a fairly good first half," Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "Our team is prone to make turnovers in our own half, and we paid dearly for it. To the credit of Deerfield, they pressured the ball well and anticipated very well. They took the best of their chances.
"I was happy with the way our team played at times. Especially, at large stretches in the first half and in the second half.
"Off corner kicks, we seem to be dangerous, and we moved the ball better than previous games. In the end, we don't have the experience ... to finish, and on defense we're not aware enough of what's around us."
Deerfield had little time to savor the win. The Warriors, the five seed in the Army bracket of the PepsiCo tournament, meet Minooka at 3:30 p.m. at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.
