Wheaton N. adjusts, defeats Glenbard N.
Falcons 5-0 victory extends win streak to 5
By Bill Stone
CAROL STREAM -- Just before halftime Wednesday, Wheaton North junior outside midfielder Kate Kortenhoeven gave the extra effort just to keep the cross by senior teammate Niamh Kane from going past the end line and out of bounds.
“Coach (Tim McEvilly) always tells us just give it everything you’ve got until (the ball) goes all the way out,” Kortenhoeven said. “That’s what I always try to do
and that time it just happened to work out nicely to finish strong.”
The hard work was just beginning.
Kortenhoeven dribbled all the way along the outer edge of the box and then cut towards the center to deliver a shot. She notched the first goal in the Falcons’ 5-0 DuPage Valley Conference victory at Glenbard North that extended their winning streak to five in a row.
Kortenhoeven, the Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match, also scored the final goal with 1:03 left and assisted one of three goals by Kane, who was pressed into duty as a starting forward. Senior Christina Crochet and sophomore Anna Warfield also had assists.
“Yeah, that (first goal) was tiring. That’s probably the hardest I’ve had to work(for one),” Kortenhoeven said. “It’s always nice when making those long runs finish off on a high point with that goal.
“Originally I was just thinking of crossing it back in to a teammate who had a better angle. Once I started to run around the (defender) who was right on me, I realized I could try and get a shot off.”
The goal put the Falcons (8-6-0, 2-3-0) ahead 1-0 just 1:34 before halftime. With only 24.4 seconds before the break, Kane broke free down right wing and converted off Warfield’s pass after already being thwarted several times by outstanding goalkeeping from Glenbard North sophomore Karissa Chalus.
Kane also scored with 31:41 and 9:20 remaining to achieve her first hat trick with the Falcons. Chalus faced 14 second half shots for the Panthers (2-9-1, 1-5-0), many of them of the point-blank variety.
“The first half I was definitely getting frustrated. I think we all were,” Kane said. “We just had so many chances, and it’s only OK to miss that many up to some degree.”
For the Falcons, this game was all about adjustments.
The date of the game was moved to Wednesday after a scheduling snafu. Then the varsity starting time was moved from 6:30 to 4:30 p.m., flipping with the sophomore game, in hopes of beating impending storms.
Kane said the Falcons found out about the earlier start at school around lunch time. Skies were dark but neither lightning nor even rain occurred.
“It gets kind of scary (not scoring) towards the end of the first half. We didn’t even know if the weather was going to hold out,” Kane said. “That’s why we wanted a couple in the first half, but luckily we got some at the end.”
Offensively, the Falcons were minus their usual starting forwards, senior Margaret Hupp and junior Rose Quinn. Hupp sat out because of a red card. Quinn was injured in practice Tuesday.
With senior Tori MacDonald, a key defensive reserve, also out, there was further movement between midfield and the backline, mostly involving Warfield and junior Jaden Trometer.
Kortenhoeven said she was moved to forward when she scored the first goal.
“It’s hard to remember, (who played where) because we don’t usually start that lineup,” joked McEvilly as he looked over his roster.
“I told them I know the way we’re going to start, but you’ll have no idea where you’re going to be coming in (to sub). We were just trying to keep some energy out there, and they did a good job of trying to be aggressive and taking people on and challenging themselves.”
Kane and junior Jacqueline Bienduga started up-top. Kane, a defender in 2016, had been playing midfielder.
“She’s technically a really good player. She’s really good in the air,” McEvilly said of Kane. “As we’ve kind of moved her from center back to center mid, she’s felt a little bit more offensive confidence.”
“I think we’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with each other so adapting is easier when we all play really well together,” Kane said. “It doesn’t really matter where we are because we know each other a lot better than in the beginning of the season. Once we’ve settled in, we have been switching lots of people around, and it’s been going really well.”
The usual starting defensive group remained intact – Warfield, Trometer, seniors Morghin Klein and Cammy Carrico and senior goalie Kate Sullivan. They easily recorded the Falcons’ sixth shutout and third during the current winning streak.
Glenbard North was blanked for the seventh time, one of them a scoreless tie with Rosary.
Arguably the most serious threat came with in the final 2 1/2 minutes.
Sophomore Jacqueline Arroyo crossed from the far right corner and Sullivan extended her arms a couple of steps in front of the goal line to grab the ball.
Prior to the winning streak, the Falcons had lost three straight and five of six with just three goals. Before Wednesday, Kortenhoeven only had scored against Lockport in the Falcons’ last defeat (3-1 on April 13).
“One of the practices we had after we’d gone on a losing streak, we came out and gave it our all. After that, we kind of realized that’s what we have to do in games so just playing well together has been a huge improvement,” Kortenhoeven said.
During this winning streak, the Falcons have outscored opponents 17-3. The five-goal output was their second-highest total in a game.
“As a team, since we’ve simplified things about two weeks ago, the kids feel more confident about what their roles are and that allows them to play to their strengths, even if we’re just getting 10 minutes at a time,” McEvilly said. “They’re much more confident now than they were about two, three weeks ago. If the kids feel good, then we have more success.”
Glenbard North coach Dave Stanfield felt good that his team didn’t allow an early goal, a recurring pattern several times this season. However, Stanfield thought the second goal by Kane just before halftime dampened his team’s spirits.
The Panthers lost to Hoffman Estates 5-2 Saturday after their first shutout victory of the season Thursday, 1-0 over Lake Park, a team Wheaton North has also beaten.
Four-year varsity player Emma Martinez, Glenbard North's only senior, scored against Lake Park off a free kick. Wednesday, the Panthers started three juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen Wednesday.
Chalus, a returning starter, kept the Panthers in the game score-wise.
“She sure did (stop several shots), didn’t she? Unfortunately, we want to try and protect her a bit better,” Stanfield said.
“Often playing good defense is trying to keep hold of the ball better. We were giving up the ball too much today, just losing it too easily. We’ve got to try and not force things too much, too much direct soccer, too much punting it down the field, too many aimless passes, too much playing under pressure. Again, it’s a
young team and we’ve got to be patient with them. They showed a lot of resilience for hanging in there as long as we did.”
Wheaton North's Kane has scored a number of her goals this season off Trometer restarts. In the 27th minute, Kane headed Trometer’s corner kick off the crossbar.
Kane also had a one-on-one in the 14th minute but was thwarted by Chalus, who also handled strong shots by sophomore Abby Atkinson and Kane in the 29th and 32nd minutes.
A few more blasts at Chalus came in the final 40 minutes as well as a few just over the goal and one off the outer left post by Kortenhoeven with 4:30 remaining.
“We hit three or four crossbars or posts. (Chalus) made some fantastic saves in the first half, some fantastic saves in the second half, a couple of breakaways,” McEvilly said. “She was busy and did a fantastic job keeping herself positive. It’s nice to see kids when they’ve being challenged and not having success (team-wise) to still push themselves. To see that out of the keeper I was very impressed.”
