Talented Hinsdale Central
squad dispatches Manteno
Defending Class 1A champs are no match for Red Devils
By Ken Keenan
SCHAUMBURG -- A deep Hinsdale Central squad scored often
against Manteno en route to a 7-0 win during PepsiCo Showdown
play Saturday at Olympic Park.
Manteno, the defending Class 1A state champions, proved no match for Hinsdale
Central, a Class 3A school with a much longer bench than the Panthers
employed.
"We knew, being the smallest team in the tourney, what we're up
against," said Manteno coach Kevin Mikuce, whose club fell to
0-2-4 overall with the loss. "But that's why we do it. We're a team
that's building, and we don't face teams like this in 1A."
Panthers sophomore forward Jordyn Shipp said the benefits should come
later in the season.
"When we face 1A teams in the postseason, we'll be stronger," Shipp said.
The Red Devils showed their strength from the start, with junior
forward Emma Dannhausen-Brun -- Chicagoland Soccer's MVP of the Match
-- getting the scoring party started in the first half on a finish of a nice passing sequence between senior forward Sydney Griffin and Maeve McLaughlin.
Not long after, senior wingback Lauren Cangelosi made it 2-0 by floating a long shot into the right side of the net past Manteno junior goalkeeper Kara Keene.
Relentlessly pushing the pace, Hinsdale Central quickly upped the
margin to 3-0 when senior midfielder Jenny Savinski passed to
Dannhausen-Brun, who scored from the left side.
Junior midfielder Lizzy Nelson started the next scoring play. She fed freshman forward Kate Shroyer, who found Dannhausen-Brun for her third goal of the
match on a close-in shot high into the net.
Hinsdale Central increased the lead to 5-0 on a left-footed, 25-yard
blast into the top left corner by junior midfielder Cathryn Quinlivan. The Red Devils made it 6-0 before the break when senior wingback Kate Murphy put a ball over Keene's head off a pass from Quinlivan. That play was started by sophomore midfielder Erin Otto.
"We were able to make runs up top and cut around defenders,"
Dannhausen-Brun said. "For me, the more goals we score, the more motivated
we are. So we've got to keep taking shots."
Hinsdale Central coach Michael Smith, who saw his team improve to
6-1-1, said, "We talked about consistency of play, and the execution
was there offensively -- building from the back to the front, good
finishing, being balanced. We were looking to seize the opportunity,
and we did just that."
With the Red Devils substituting freely in the second half, junior
midfielder Margaret Tamm completed the scoring with a tap-in from the
left side midway through the second 40 minutes.
Nelson, who normally toils on one of two Hinsdale Central junior varsity squads,
was among the Red Devils playing in her first varsity match.
"It was exciting," she said. "It was different from the JV level ...
faster play. I just tried to play my own game. You also get to see how
everyone plays, and everyone on this team communicates."
Smith said that's all part of the plan.
"Having two JV teams allows us to have that depth," he said. "Each
week, we give a few girls a chance to get varsity experience. Lizzy
knows, 'This is my chance, take advantage of it.' Just being a
competent soccer player is huge, and that's what we expect from the
girls in our program. We want that familiarity with each level. It
starts with the uniform, and it breeds confidence -- and trust.
"We also look at each match as the most important match -- one match at a time."
The Red Devils will face unseeded Lincoln-Way North on Tuesday in the round of 16.
Mikuce is hoping the Panthers can take a page out of the Red Devils' book.
"I was impressed -- they're good ... kept possession really well,"
Mickuce said. "But I'm impressed with all the teams here at PepsiCo.
We have a lot of young girls, so we have to work on our shape -- and
being aggressive."
Shipp added, "And when we're down, we have to keep our heads up."
