Lake Forest avoids another
meltdown, defeats Libertyville
Bourne's two goals keep Scouts in hunt for conference title

LIBERTYVILLE -- Just a couple of days removed from a stunning late-game loss to North Suburban Lake rival Warren. Lake Forest had to hit the road again and try to get the right mind-set and a victory at the same time.
Paige Bourne helped Lake Forest's cause with a couple of goals off set pieces. But Libertyville scored a late goal and made the match close. Still, Lake Forest held on for a 2-1 victory over host Libertyville in a NSC Lake Division game on Saturday afternoon.
"We actually talked about that game and thought we played well in that second half," Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said of the Warren game. "We let up a goal on a corner kick. and it's been our nemesis. Then the end goal we had all the girls marked except for the one who attacked the ball at the end. We did play well and caused them problems."
It was around the same time of the match Saturday that Libertyville was able to cut the lead in half and try to turn around the game.
"We were getting tired and played our best in the first half," Stuckslager said. "We had a lot of pressure and movement. More importantly, we're trying to be more disciplined, and here we had some chances.
"We were able to make something happen. If you put them in dangerous situations, then something is going to happen. I thought the girls played well, with a lot of energy, and moved the ball well too."
Bourne opened the scoring for the Scouts (7-3-2, 2-1) by curling her first corner kick into the back corner. It's one of six that she has this season. She scored in the 18th minute.
"I think it's more my style," Bourne said. "I had taken one right before that one, and it was wide of the box. So I thought maybe I would try something different. I just swung it in there, and it worked."
In the second half, Lake Forest was given an indirect kick in the penalty area after a couple of Libertyville players fell down in the area of the ball. The Wildcats had to line up a couple of yards from the goal line. The Scouts' Adrian Walker touched the ball, which left Bourne to hit it, and it found its way off a deflection into the back of the net. That made it 2-0 Lake Forest in the 51st minute.
The Scouts caused many problems for the Wildcats (8-3, 1-2) in the midfield and their attempts at setting up an attack. Most of that came from the hard work of Carly Hoke, who broke up a number of plays.
"I just try to do what I can out there," said Hoke, Chicagoland Soccer's MVP of the Match. "I just feed off other people, and we've got a strong midfield as well.
"Sometimes I'm on the wing or attacking, and I go on the defensive. So, the team needs me, and I fill in. We have a lot of good chemistry with each other."
The Wildcats scored in the 69th minute, which cut the lead to 2-1. Julia Neiweem scored on a loose ball that was misplayed in the back. She normally plays on defense as a sweeper but was moved forward to help the attack up top. It worked and resulted in her first goal of the season.
"I just kept running and was told to get on the goal," Neiweem said of the play. "No one was following up the whole game, so it turned out all good that I got on it."
Libertyville made some adjustments late in the game that helped them get the goal. Maybe an earlier change would have helped more, but the Wildcats were able to break down the Scouts late.
"We switched formations from a 4-5-1 to a 4-4-2," Libertyville coach Andy Bitta said. "Over the last 20 minutes, I thought we put some great pressure on (Lake Forest). It's something that we've got to look at against some of the better teams. We were having problems making them up until we switched formations. I thought we marked up them perfectly, and that's why we put more pressure and got more balls into the box and finally scored."
With the victory, Lake Forest keeps its hopes alive in the NSC Lake with three games remaining on its division schedule.
