Baderman's left foot boots
Hinsdale C. to win over Young
Red Devils ride midfielder's two goals, assist to regional title

HINSDALE – Hinsdale Central midfielder Jack Baderman is left-footed and most everyone knows it.
That’s all right by him.
While Baderman continues to work on beating defenders off the dribble when forced to his right, he’s not slacking off from dissecting opponents with his left foot.
The senior demonstrated that Saturday night, scoring two goals and assisting on a third to lift the host Red Devils to a 3-1 victory over Whitney Young in the Class 3A Hinsdale Central Regional title game at Dickinson Field.
Hinsdale Central (14-4-4) now has won four consecutive regional championships and nine in the past 12 seasons. The Red Devils move on to the Lyons Sectional and a semifinal meeting on Tuesday with archrival Lyons.
That match has been eagerly awaited ever since the Red Devils knocked off the Lions 1-0 at Dickinson Field on Sept. 27, a win that sent Hinsdale Central on its way to the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title.
But on Saturday the Red Devils, especially the seniors, were savoring the victory in their final home game.
“It is very special,” said Baderman, Chicagoland Soccer’s Man of the Match. “It didn’t quite sink in that this is my last year until I put the third one away. It’s fantastic to win it at home and play my last game here and go out with a good victory.”
Baderman has scored 12 goals this season, five of which have come in the two playoff wins.
The English-born playmaker’s first strike against the Dolphins came with 16:59 left in what had been a scoreless first half and roused the Red Devils from a rather sluggish start. Baderman found himself in space about 35 yards out and blasted a shot into the upper right corner despite being pushed to his right.
“A lot of the kids who know me, a lot of the Lyons kids I’ve played against over the years, everyone always says, ‘lefty, lefty,’ whenever I get the ball, so it’s just kind of a thing I have to deal with,” Baderman said. “I’m getting better with my right, and there are always areas I can improve on, so that’s just something I’ve got to work on.”
Baderman naturally likes to free up his left foot, but he’s not afraid of being overplayed anymore. Now he’s willing to give what the defense gives him and have a go with his weaker foot.
“It depends. Sometimes I look at the defender’s feet, and if he’s not moving his feet, I’ll try to give him a little shimmy to my right and then cut back to the left,” Baderman said. “But I’m getting to the state now where I’m good enough to go past kids to my right, so that’s a big thing. Kids normally overcompensate for my left, so then it’s easier to take it to the right.”
Baderman also can take it on the rebound, as he did in scoring his second goal with 15:15 remaining in the second half.
The Dolphins (10-9-2) had trimmed Hinsdale Central’s lead to 2-1 at the 38:13 mark of the second half when Jaime Alonso scored on a penalty kick after the Red Devils were called for a hand ball in their own penalty area.
But the hosts scored against the run of play. Forward Michael Collins unleashed a shot from outside the penalty area that was blocked by Young defender Erick Gonzalez. But the ball caromed sideways to the left, and Baderman buried a brilliant one-timer with his left foot. The 16-yard shot beat Young goalkeeper Jesus Velasco into the lower right corner.
That essentially ended the stiff resistance put up by Young. The Dolphins kept the game close thanks to Velasco, who made eight saves, and some uncharacteristically uneven play from the Red Devils.
Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins acknowledged that his team is capable of better performances, but lauded his troops for getting the job done.
“I think those three finishes were probably the best we’ve seen this year,” Wiggins said. “That’s what is important in a game like this.”
The second finish, which came four minutes after Baderman’s goal, was authored by senior defender Will McGowen, who headed home a corner kick from Baderman to make it 2-0.
“It was a perfect ball,” McGowen said of his fifth goal of the season. “I’m just trying to do what I can for the team.”
The Red Devils got a scare early in the second half when sophomore Jeremy Yi was bloodied after bumping heads with a Young player. Yi suffered a gash to his forehead and was taken to the doctor for stitches.
Yi’s brother Justin, who was injured in a similar collision Oct. 14 against York, said after the game that he thought Jeremy did not have a concussion.
“I was standing pretty close to him,” Justin Yi said. “It sounded like a scrape. When I banged heads with someone at York, it sounded like cement blocks hitting each other.”
Justin Yi suffered a concussion but has been cleared to play Tuesday against Lyons, the opponent all of the Red Devils wanted to see.
“What more could we ask for?” Wiggins said. “As long as we keep playing the style we’re playing, we’ll be OK.
“Our defense has been great, with Evan [Floersch] continuing to lead the way and (goalkeeper) Wes Bergevin having another good game.”
Bergevin made one save and had to come off his line to cut off several other balls. He has given up just eight goals in his last 13 outings.
