Barrington takes down
Hersey in league opener
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS -- Barrington eased past host Hersey with a second half goal flurry in the league opener for both sides Wednesday night at Roland Goins Stadium.
The reigning Mid-Suburban League champion Fillies (2-1-0, 1-0-0) earned a 3-0 victory thanks to second half goals from Kate Lubinsky, Piper Lucier, and Nicole Gwiasda.
"We played one good half of soccer today,” said manager Ryan Stengren of his Fillies, who are ranked seventh in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25. “It came in the second half when we possessed and moved the ball around like I know we can.
"(It) could have been 1-0 off of one of their long throws in the first half, but we came back out after the break and played a solid 40 minutes to control the game."
Hersey (1-1-1, 0-1-0) drew praise from manager, Mike Rusniak, who saw plenty of positives despite the loss.
"The first half could have gone either way,” he said. “(We) had that opportunity to put one in off of a long throw from Becca Caliendo. Finishing those chances is something we know will be absolutely essential as the season progresses.
"We had great energy in the game. But after they scored we struggled with gaining any momentum which led to two more breakdowns and their final two goals.
"Our captains Cassie Caruso, Allison Beck, and Becca really stepped up, and showed terrific leadership. We received some terrific play from Finley Wilcox, plus sophomore Natalie Suto and freshman Asha Bontje."
The Huskies will continue a grueling three-day stretch with a nonconference match at no. 12 Stevenson on Thursday, before hosting Wheeling on Friday evening.
Barrington has a day off before hosting Elk Grove.
"We still have a lot of work to do, and we need to get healthy,” Stengren said. “Today, Nicole (Gwiasda) and Gracie Stagnito both gave us very strong efforts out there."
