Game recap: Vernon Hills
at Grayslake Central
Senior Grace Guillaume scored twice to lead visiting Vernon Hills to s 4-2 win Tuesday at Grayslake Central. Frances Poulos and Katie Huse also their names into the scoresheet in the Cougars (3-0-2) win.
"We've been out since March 24, so there was some rust," said manager Mike McCaulou. “We had to wipe that off of our game, but we played well, put four into the back of the net and got ourselves a win against a sectional opponent, which is always a good thing.”
Grayslake Central also had to shake off the cobwebs.
"Our layoff since the 24th of March showed in the first part of the first half, but we still did a lot of good things that we'll build from," said Rams manager Keith Andersson, whose club lost its second straight after a 4-0 defeat at no. 1 Libertyville.
"Vernon Hills is a good team, but we want to play a difficult schedule. That's what will get us ready for the last half of the season, (then) the playoffs." added Andersson.
Guillaume bagged the opener in the 15th minute, then Poulos doubled the Cougars advantage at 32 minutes.
Less than 60 seconds after the restart, Kaitlyn Morrissey pulled one back for Grayslake Central after the visitors were unable to clear a Katie Armstrong send, which allowed the opportunistic Morrissey to find the back of the net from in-close.
The home side conceded a third goal in the 40th minute after Rams keeper Piper Gallaher turned away a Guillaume spot-kick. However the ball spilled free, and Guillaume one-timed past Gallaher, who had no chance.
Gallaher came to the rescue after the break, twice on point-blank attempts, to help keep her club within striking distance
Armstrong drew the Rams closer when her superb left-footed corner found the far inside netting in the 50th minute.
Vernon Hills ended the scoring when Huse connected four minutes later.
Thursday night, the Cougars fell 2-0 to Glenbrook South for their first loss of the season.
Grayslake Central has a better idea of what its lineup will look like moving forward.
"We learned that putting freshman Madison Hoffman up-top with senior Courtney Fletcher gives us size, strength, power and speed,” said Andersson. “It looks like those two will be a dangerous duo for us from here on out.
The Rams ended their losing streak with a 3-2 win at Lake Forest Academy on Thursday.
Next up for the Rams is a busy weekend tournament schedule. They will play Plainfield Central at 11:15 a.m. and Timothy at 2:15 p.m. Saturday as part of the BodyArmor Series at Olympic Park in Schaumburg. Grayslake Central is back in action Sunday in the event against an opponent to be determined.
