Barrington's fast start sinks York

BARRINGTON -- Three first half goals from Kaitlin Taylor helped propel a commanding Barrington side toward a 5-0 victory over York on Thursday on the opening night of Naperville Invitational play.
The Fillies (11-1-0), who are ranked seventh in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, defeated no. 8 Loyola (10-4-1) for the pool title and quarterfinal berth. Barrington prevailed 6-5 a six-round shootout after a 0-0 regulation tie.
"We possessed the ball real well, and Kaitlin (Taylor) has really found a way to put yourself in a position to score for us," said Fillies manager Ryan Stengren.
“Brooke Brown and Kathleen Baker continue to play well for us in the midfield (Brown) and along the back (Baker). We still need to play a little quicker and be sharper if we want to do well in this tournament and for the rest of the season."
Taylor, who bagged two last weekend in the Fillies 3-0 victory at Mid-Suburban League West Division rival Fremd, found the back of the Dukes (4-4-1) net in their first real chance when she ran onto a lovely Brown cross from the endline in the sixth minute.
Piper Lucier, Riley Raynor, Gracie Stagnito, Brown and Taylor were at the heart of the early exchanges from the home side, which dominated the first half and kept their guests under pressure and helped prevent them from getting out of their own end.
"Barrington did a great job of utilizing the tremendous width of their pitch to create dangerous passing channels," said Dukes manager Stevan Dobrik. “They were methodical in their play and capitalized on the opportunities they created. Their defense was quick to pressure the ball and gave us little time in our decision-making in the first half.”
Taylor made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when she dribbled to her left before sending her angled shot the other way. It hit off the post and rolled over the goal line.
The sophomore tripled the Fillies advantage when she followed the flight of a well-struck effort from Nicole Gwiasda that bounded off the bar and onto the foot of the ever-present Taylor, who calmly slotted home her third of the half in the 36th minute.
Brooke added another just before the intermission.
Dobric was pleased with the match-long effort of seniors Kathleen Buhrfiend and Olivia Greco in the middle of the park, as well as sophomore Ava Hansmann, who in the second half was able to get forward on several occasions on the outside to provide quality service.
"Kathleen is a great player and leader for us. I am very fortunate to be able to be her coach here at York," said Dobric.
Buhrfield will attend Notre Dame in the fall to study neuroscience, while the aforementioned Kathleen Barrington’s Baker is also headed to South Bend, where she will run track.
"I am really happy that I came back from club (Eclipse) to play my senior year of soccer to be with friends and to be on such a terrific team,” Baker said. “The atmosphere is tremendous around this team, and we all share the same goals of working hard and doing what it takes to be our best.”
Stengren brought on his reserves after Raynor added one more on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. Sophomore keeper Avery Trapp entered the game and shared the clean-sheet in the Fillies seventh-consecutive shutout win.
