Corsairs post second-consecutive shutout with 4-0 win
By Rusty Silber
GRAYSLAKE -- The Carmel defense has shown a lot in its four wins this season. In victory, the Corsairs have surrendered only one goal.
Goalkeeper Camden Krautsack has stepped into an important role. His second-consecutive shutout led Carmel to 4-0 victory over Grayslake Central in a road nonconference contest Tuesday night.
Krautsack made seven stops for the Corsairs (4-2-0). The two that stood out were his breakaway saves that kept Grayslake Central (1-9-0) off the scoreboard.
"He had two big saves," Carmel coach Ray Krawzak said. "(Grayslake Central) broke through us a couple of times. You kind of count on your goalkeeper to make one big save in a game to keep you in it. But to make two changes the whole dynamic of the game. That really put it out of reach for them."
Carmel entered the contest off a league schedule-opening 5-0 shutout victory over East Suburban Catholic Conference opponent Marian on Saturday in another game that the defense and Krautsack made an impact.
In this one, the junior keeper made one of his outstanding stops in each half. His effort earned Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honors.
"I made a few good saves off a few good breakaways," said Krautsack, "It's tough, because you never know when to come out or not. It's kind of a game whether you go or not. You hesitate a few times before you realize what the striker is going to do, either to dribble or take a shot right away.
"You have to get settled, stand your ground, or go. It's nerve-wracking, but once you make one save you get a little more comfortable with it. It's really important to get a hand on the ball. Even if you get one hand on the ball, you can tip it to either side or a defender can get back and clear it. I just want to get a touch on it."
The Carmel defense features Eli Larson, Joe Baude, Michael Handel and Riley Pierson. All have found ways to contribute to the backline both as goal-stoppers and on the attack.
"Riley (Pierson) did an awesome job getting involved, getting assists from the right back," Krawzak added. "He changed the way he played and was getting much more aggressive in the attack. It was needed on our first goal, because we spent much of our first half trying to get in the back of the net.
"The message at halftime was to attack and do your job with the chances you have to find the back of the net. Riley Pierson ... found the way to set up Ian (McKernan) on the first goal."
The icebreaker for the Corsairs took a while. McKernan took the service from Pierson and half-volleyed his shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. It happened in the 31st minute.
"I just found myself in a good position," McKernan said. "I knew I was too far from the goal to head it. So, I kind of brought it down with my chest and just found the net. It's really fun to score those, and it was a nice goal."
In the second half, Larson scored on a header off a Handel corner kick in the 49th minute that made the score 2-0.
Shane Farrell followed with the final goals in the 61st and 77th minutes. Pierson picked up his second assist of the game when Carmel extended its lead to 3-0.
"We did take care of business eventually," Krawzak said. "Shane Ferrell is stepping up to a good role. He and McKernan are a different type of midfield than we've had in the past. They do a nice job and are very confident players with their feet.
"We took care of business. We had a game plan, and it took a while for us to execute. If the backline does their job, we're very sound. It's going to be very hard to score on us this year."
Grayslake Central is still trying to find better results than what they've seen through 10 games this season. The Rams have won just one game, but their play on the field dictates something completely different.
Grayslake Central has played a rugged schedule but the Rams don't use that as an excuse.
"Same story, we can keep possession for long periods, but we don't do anything with it," Grayslake Central coach Tom Hamilton said. "We don't communicate enough, and we know that these are the issues that we have. We just haven't fixed them yet. So, knowing one thing and doing that thing seems to be two separate things for us right now.
"It's a matter of execution. It's a matter of who wants it more. We get into the final third. We stay standing where were at. You can't score goals as a statue. You have to move forward and look to attack. In the few times that we do, well we miss the goal.
"So, hopefully one of these days it clicks. We'll see who moves forward hungry in the next game. If we keep playing like this, we'll keep losing like this. We know what we've got to do, and we've got to do it."
Going against Carmel, Grayslake Central had opportunities but had to watch the Corsairs take advantage and score goals.
"Carmel was a good team," Hamilton added. "They played hard, and they definitely outworked us. In spells they took over and deserved to win. Their goalkeeper played a good game.
"When they got in the final third they had hunger and urgency. They took their chances, and we didn't. Credit to them, they got the win that they deserved."
