Carmel rallies to tie Hinsdale Central
Mia Salvi’s tally in 74th minute yields 3-3 Malnati's draw
By Matt Le Cren
HINSDALE -- Hinsdale Central junior Sarah Cernugel and Carmel sophomore Mia Salvi played for opposing sides Monday and both players came through for their respective teams.
Their performances were much-needed boosts for a pair of teams struggling to score against quality opponents.
Cernugel tallied her first two goals of the season to give host Hinsdale Central a two-goal lead, but Salvi scored her first goal of the campaign off a goalmouth scramble to complete a late Carmel rally that resulted in a 3-3 draw at Dickinson Field.
Each team picked up their first point in pool play in the Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Classic. Group B leader Naperville North (2-0-0) and Evanston (1-1-0) top the group. HInsdale Central gets shot to knock off the leader Wednesday. Carmel hosts Evanston the same evening.
Monday's result provided each team with a glimmer of hope for the future.
“We’d rather win,” Carmel coach Ray Krawzak said. “I’ll take a tie.
“The spirit that we had to come back, that’s what we needed. I think from the beginning of the season until now, we’ve gone through a challenge of deciding whether we’re going to believe in ourselves.
“In the last two games, while we haven’t had wins, we’ve had a lot of mental turnaround, and I think coming back is a win for us right now. Now there’s not going to be many situations where we don’t think we are in a game, so that’s a positive thing.”
The positivity didn’t begin until late for the visiting (2-5-1). A leaky defense again proved to be a problem, and Carmel trailed 3-1 until scoring on back-to-back shots four minutes apart.
Senior forward Zenaya Barnes, whose penalty kick at the 11:36 mark of the first half tied the game at 1-1, slipped a pass over a defender into the box to sophomore Sarah Galla, who poked a shot inside the right post with 10:56 to go in the second half.
The Red Devils (1-4-2) had a chance to regain a two-goal lead 45 seconds later, but Samantha Moriarty missed high on a 34-yard free kick.
The next shot, off the toe of Salvi, traveled about a foot before crossing the goal line.
It was set up by some nifty work by sophomore Lyndsey Basara and senior Caitlin Teehan, who broke down the Hinsdale Central defense with deft passing and dribbling.
Basara passed into the left side of the box to Teehan, who beat her defender around the corner on the end line and dribbled toward goalkeeper Fiona Fitzsimmons before passing into a crowd of humanity in the 6-yard box.
Barnes appeared to knock the ball off the left post and then several players from both sides hacked it as it rolled along the goal line before Salvi booted it home to tie the game with 6:36 remaining.
“It was just a scramble,” Salvi said. “Somebody hit it and then it hit off a defender and then somebody else hit it off the post and the ball came right to my feet. I was right there, so I just kicked it in.”
Both squads had only one more opportunity after that. A Carmel corner kick was cleared easily with 1:50 left, and Hinsdale Central senior Samantha Guido missed wide right on a 10-yard shot with 40 seconds to go.
Salvi said the tie felt like a win.
“It does. We really have been improving over the past week, and it showed in the game on Saturday (a 2-0 loss to Naperville North). That felt like we did really well.
“Tying 3-3 (tonight), we keep getting better and better, but we really wanted to win.”
While the Corsairs fell short of victory, the comeback was a mental win of sorts.
“It’s a huge confidence boost,” Salvi said. “It shows how we can score within such a short amount of time.
“It shows that throughout the game we could have scored more goals. We had so many opportunities.”
So did Hinsdale Central, whose struggling offense needed a boost and got it, especially from Cernugel who earned Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honors for starting and finishing the scoring for the Red Devils, who had scored only two goals in their first six matches.
“I was proud of how we got up early, and we were taking chances and finishing them,” Cernugel said. “We were in the game for the whole time.
“It was a good team performance, and we’ve been working a lot in practice about transition and scoring, and it really paid off for us.”
Cernugel bagged the first goal of the game on just such a transition, running onto a perfect lead pass from Brittany Doneske and scoring on a breakaway midway through the first half.
“She played a great ball, and I saw it from the opposite side,” Cernugel said. “I dribbled up to the goalie. She didn’t really move so I kicked it in the corner, and it ended up going in.”
Like the Carmel did later, the Red Devils scored on consecutive shots in the second half. Guido put the hosts in front 2-1 when she headed home a loose, high-bouncing ball in front at the 28:45 mark.
Three minutes later, Cernugel’s pot shot from distance flew under the crossbar to make it 3-1.
“Sarah is the type of player who comes in and all she wants to do is work hard for the team,” Hinsdale Central coach Tony Madonia said. “She’s not ever someone who is after the glory, but she’s someone who earns it.
“She’s one of the most coachable players on the team, because she did what we talked about. We said you need to have an eye for the goal, and you need to take chances.
“Well, when you’re 25 yards out and you score a goal like that, that’s taking a chance, and when you make a weakside run and get on the end of a ball and then finish it, that’s having an eye for the goal.”
Lindsey LeMay got the assist on Cernugel’s second strike.
“Lindsey carried it across the middle, took her defender with her, and I kind of carried off that,” Cernugel said. “I took a shot, and it ended up going over the goalie’s head.”
While it wasn’t enough to get the win, the Red Devils are trending upward.
“We really would have liked to win today,” Madonia said. “We were right there once again, but we got better.
“We had two earned goals. The other goal was just wanting it more, Sam taking control.
“That’s what we’re looking for. We scored three goals, and we need to continue to do that.”
Cernugel thinks the Red Devils will and that the rewards will follow.
“Hopefully we can carry this over to the other games,” Cernugel said. “When you score three it’s great for us.
“It’s great competition so we’ve been improving because of that and because of how the coaches have prepared us. I think we’re ready to start getting some wins.”
Carmel also has the same thoughts about its side.
“At the beginning of the season we started off weak, but we’ve just been getting better and better,” Salvi said. “It shows that against these good teams we can compete with them and do really well.”
