Freshman leads Carmel past Lake Forest
Hartman takes care of scoring in 2-1 win
By Bill McLean
LAKE FOREST — A quick nod from Carmel freshman forward Anna Hartman was all that Carmel senior midfielder Mia Salvi needed.
The faint gesture triggered a booming service from Salvi in the 33rd minute of the Corsairs’ nonconference match at Lake Forest’s West campus Monday afternoon. Hartman escaped from a cluster of Scouts, dashed to catch up to Salvi’s home-run delivery and then poked a shot past LF freshman goalkeeper Sarah Constantine for the first of her two goals in Carmel’s 2-1 victory.
Salvi’s assist traveled about 40 yards.
“Perfect pass,” Hartman said after Carmel’s third-straight triumph and a matchup of squads sitting just outside the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25. “Much of Mia’s game is about control. She never rushes. She always makes good decisions.”
Six minutes later, the pair connected for another tally, with Salvi’s helper covering about 15 yards this time.
“I’ve been impressed with Anna from the beginning,” Salvi said of the fabulous freshman. “She’s fast, smart with the ball and unselfish.”
Carmel second-year coach and 2008 Carmel graduate Stephanie Kile, a midfielder when she played for the Mundelein school, warned her crew about the seemingly comfy two-goal lead at halftime.
“I’ve read the statistics,” Kile said seconds before the start of the second half. “You have to be careful when you’re the team with a 2-0 lead at the break.”
Lake Forest (3-3-0) notched its goal in the 70th minute off a corner kick. Scouts senior co-captain and defender Hayden Keller booted the ball above a chaotic, jostling crowd near the goal, before senior defender Mary McKendry redirected it past winning keeper Lisete Astudillo (12 saves).
“Our corner kicks were our best offensive weapons today,” Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said. “We came out flat against a team with a lot of speed. You can’t do that against any of the teams on our tough schedule. Carmel’s work rate was very good. Carmel was organized.
“Our opponent today had the perfect game-plan.”
Had Corsairs senior back Liz Galla been judged for her performance in the final 10 minutes Monday, she would have garnered a perfect ’10.’ Galla either thwarted or disrupted at least four Scouts chances in the span. LF junior forward Ashleigh Rupprecht and senior forward Callie Birtman teamed to produce a dangerous sequence in the 75th minute but had to transition to defense after Galla’s interruption.
“Liz,” Salvi said, “saved us.”
“Liz cleans up things for us,” added Kile, who also lauded Corsairs senior back Abby Gibbons for her stultifying ways after Carmel improved to 4-2-1. “It’s sometimes easy to get caught up and overly excited about what great offensive players do in games. But what Liz did out there, I’m telling you — that mattered.”
Carmel’s ‘D’ had to come up big in the final 40 minutes, because Lake Forest played with the heightened urgency of a team trailing near the end of a playoff game. Carmel even had a “12th” teammate — a fairly strong wind.
“We needed to bring it in the second half, much more than we had at the start,” said Rupprecht, who played a spirited brand of soccer throughout the overcast afternoon. “We came out with more of a competitive attitude after halftime.
“We decided to play harder and smarter and for each other.”
Rupprecht found herself inches from Astudillo as Carmel’s keeper briefly bobbled a shot on goal from Birtman in the 48th minute.
Scouts junior midfielder and co-captain Emersen Waddle provided several promising moments via her passing skills. She appeared to have suffered a significant knee injury in the second half but gutted it out and stayed on the pitch.
Some two minutes after scoring, the hosts reapplied the heat offensively. But Galla’s will and toughness stymied the LF threat along the benches’ sideline. She stumbled out of bounds after the effort, popped right back up and clapped as Carmel prepared for a throw-in.
As the match entered its 80 minute, Corsairs freshman midfielder Jillian Miller ate up valuable clock by dribbling under control and patiently near midfield before dishing a pass to a wide-open teammate.
“Our work rate … that impressed me the most today,” Kile said. “I didn’t see anybody’s head down after Lake Forest scored. “They all continued to fight.
“Against a very good team like Lake Forest, you have to do that.”
Carmel travels to Forest View on Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. match against Saint Viator in the East Suburban Catholic Conference; Lake Forest faces host and North Suburban Conference foe Mundelein at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
