Hot Warren rolls past Carmel
5-goal night delivers Blue Devils 6th-straight win to open season

GURNEE -- Last year, Max Floriani played the center back spot for Warren. This season, the role has changed for the junior.
He moved up the field a slot to toil as a defensive midfielder, and the switch has paid dividends.
On Monday night, Floriani's hard work was a big part of Warren's possession game and his outstanding passing ability aided the Blue Devil's offensive outburst in a 5-1 nonconference win over visiting Carmel.
Floriani scored a goal, Luke Schoenbrunn tallied a brace and Nolan Ehlers and Brandon Medina added solo markers for Warren, which has jumped up to no. 9 in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25.
"I just like getting the ball more and switching the field," said Floriani, who earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honor for his night of work. "I just get in the attack more. It all comes from my teammates first finding the ball. We play through the middle finding the opportunities.
"We just play together as a team, and we had a great performance together. We found ways to finish at the end. I am getting used to playing more in a different spot after six games by getting the ball more."
Warren improved to 6-0-0 on the season.
"It's another step forward and that's what we're doing," Warren coach Jason Ahonen said. "We're trying to get cleaner with our set pieces, finishing and with our defensive shape. We're looking to improve every day.
"That's our goal, and today is no different than a week ago. It's another game to prepare ourselves for upcoming games. I'm pleased with the growth we've shown from day to day or game to game.
"My job is to give them the tools to lead and that's what they're doing. It's something that we've been building on since the summer.
"We want to keep the possession of the ball. If we have the ball, then the other team can't score unless we make a mistake. That's the object, to keep the ball as much as possible.
"Tonight, was one of our better nights, especially on a slick surface initially. I thought our first unit played extremely well, and when we went to the bench those guys came on and continued it. We've been looking at film seeing what do we need to do to be better. We are also blessed with some talented players."
The Blue Devils came out with purpose and took command with three goals in the first half.
Ehlers started the scoring with a free kick that deflected off the Carmel wall and found its way into the goal in the 12th minute.
Ishaan Shah set up the second goal with a pass to Schoenbrunn for a tap-in in the 23rd minute.
Then, Floriani scored his fourth goal of the season by taking a pass from Sebastian Rodriguez through the middle of the field and finishing in the 27th minute.
Schoenbrunn added his second goal off a header that was delivered by an Ehlers set from near the end line in the 44th minute. Medina added the final Warren tally off a pass from Ben Cortes in the 70th minute.
"We were getting great crosses that were set up from our teammates," Schoenbrunn said. "We used the flanks a lot, and it helps with the runs into the box. We played really well (passing) and the tempo was up. Our first touch was phenomenal, and we played together as a team."
Carmel escaped a shutout thanks to an 80th-minute goal from Matt Grzesiak, who was impressed by his opponents.
"(Warren) crashed and connected everything," Grzesiak said. "They adapted to the rain and the wet ball. They were getting the through-ball in, and that was a killer for us.
"Obviously, we were frustrated, because we were not able to get the ball. We had a few mistakes in the back, but what I liked was how we kept our heads up and in the last 15 minutes we worked hard to get a goal out of it."
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team and move on.
"(Warren) was doing everything right, playing well, and they had a great performance," Carmel coach Ray Krawzak said. "It wasn't our best. Against a team like Warren, you have to do your best in order to make it a great game.
"They got the jump early, since we had some defensive mistakes (with) the wet ball and the inability to clear in the first half. Warren came out physically; their game plan was very clear."
The Corsairs will move forward after some positives against a club on a roll.
"I think at times we found a way to defend pretty well," Krawzak said. "The fault was that we didn't get our offense generated and never had the ball up-top until the very end.
"It was a really good game for Warren and not our best. We need to get into our ability to hold the ball and increase our attacking opportunities. Without many opportunities, you're not going to score."
