Carmel can't catch Round Lake
Corsairs cut deficit, but fall 3-2; GK Knauer stops 2 PKs

LAKE FOREST -- Carmel learned that it has a lot of depth in its season-opener. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the Corsairs past Round Lake in a 3-2 loss Tuesday in the opening round of the North Shore Shootout at the Lake Forest athletic complex.
The Corsairs got goals from senior midfielder Henry Barnes and junior forward Sean Seidl. Senior forward Austin Ehren set up the first goal, and junior forward Ben Packer assisted the second.
"We know that we didn't want a loss, but they did a lot of good things," Carmel coach Ray Krawzak said. "We have a lot of kids that work really hard, like they have something to prove, which is good."
Carmel is already thinking ahead to how it can improve in its second game of the season. That will come in a consolation bracket semifinal against Deerfield at 4:30 Thursday.
“Pretty sure already the first group we went with isn't what we will do for the next game or in the future." Krawzak said. "We're going to make some changes, and we've got some options.
“The bench demonstrated that we have a little more depth then what we realized. We have a lot of new guys, juniors and seniors that weren't on the team last year, on the varsity. There's a little pace of the game that we saw that we’ll eventually bring to the table."
What stood out in the match for Carmel was the outstanding effort from keeper Kyle Knauer, who made two penalty kick saves in the second half that kept the Corsairs in the match against the Panthers.
The first one came in the 45th minute of play. Knauer dove to his right and pushed away the shot off the leg of Round Lake's Christofer Gomez. Next, Knauer stopped Gomez a second time in the 77th minute with another PK stop and followed it up with a save on the Gomez rebound attempt.
"I think I just took the position for the opportunity," Knauer said. "It's what I had to take. (Round Lake) was very scary with their feet, and our defense kind of stepped in too much. We needed to stay planted. (Round Lake) was able to get a couple of good shots and put them in."
Carmel was able to get an early goal in the second minute of play. Ehren set up the opportunity and fed the ball to Henry Barnes for the 1-0 lead.
Round Lake needed some time to get rolling and settled in about midway through the opening half. The Panthers found the tying goal in the 33rd minute. Gomez made his way into the attacking third of the field and into the penalty area. He lost the ball, which went off one of the Corsairs' defenders. Teammate Antonio Fonseca, who supported the move, got to the loose ball, controlled it and found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Fonseca scored again in the 52nd minute when he was left unmarked in front of the goal. Ricardo Orozco sent the pass to the middle and earned the assist that led to a 2-1 Panthers lead.
Fonseca earned Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honors for his brace.
"What I'm trying to do is put pressure on the ball," he said. "I was just trying to help my teammates. All I want to do is to try to score a lot of goals and not let the team down. They also help me out too."
The Panthers added an insurance goal in the 60th minute off a 35-yard shot from Misael Tellez that dipped under the crossbar.
Carmel got a goal back quickly about a minute later making it a 3-2 contest. Seidl scored on a pass from Packer.
Round Lake had a player pick up a second yellow card in the 69th minute of play which left the Panthers down a man. However, the Corsairs couldn't find the equalizer in the waning minutes.
The Panthers had to put in a great amount of effort to come away with the victory.
"(Carmel) gives a lot of hard work," Round Lake coach Hugo Tellez said. "They just didn't give up. I mean, the last 10 minutes they were coming right at us. Whoever works their hardest will come out especially at the end of the game."
Round Lake advances to the winners’ bracket semifinals to face Lake Forest Academy at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Forest athletic complex. The Caxys defeated Deerfield 2-1 in the opening round.
