Suffer 3-2 loss on late goal at Detroit City FC
From Chicago House AC staff
The historic first league match is in the books for the Chicago House Athletic Club, Chicago’s new professional soccer team. The House fell to the National Independent Soccer Association's defending champion Detroit City FC 3-2 in front of 6,076 fans Saturday at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Mich.
House goalkeeper Mike Novotny kept the game scoreless in the 20th minute with a brilliant save on a penalty kick from Detroit City’s Patricio “Pato” Botello-Faz. The Eastern Illinois alum had a strong night despite an injury scare in the second half after he got tangled up with players from both teams in front of his net. Arguably, his best save came in the 56th minute when Detroit City FC’s Jimmy Filerman took three House defenders to the box for a point-blank chance that Novotny stopped.
The House took the lead after Wojciech Wojcik scored the first league goal in club histoy after a tactical pass by Musa Morris. The left-footed finish from in-close came in the 25th minute.
Six minutes later, Detroit City FC evened the score courtesy of a goal from defender Matt Lewis. Less than 10 minutes later the hosts took the lead on a penalty kick from midfielder Maxi Rodriguez in the 38 minute.
House coach CJ Brown’s squad found themselves chasing one goal entering the second half, and it was clear the House came out of the locker room prepared to play a more physical and faster-paced game.
Three minutes into the second half Wojcik drew a penalty kick that was converted by team captain and midfielder Drew Conner in the 48th minute. The game remained tied at 2-2 for 40 minutes until Detroit City FC defender Anthony Manning got the game-winner after a corner kick scramble at the far post in the 88th minute.
The House remain on the road against Stumptown AC (suburban Charlotte, NC) on August 14th. The team will play its inaugural home match against New Amsterdam FC (upstate N.Y.) at 7:35 p.m. August 21 at SeatGeek Stadium.
The 2021 NISA fall season consists of 18 total matches for each of its 10 teams. Tickets for each of the House's nine home matches this fall are available at www.chicagohouseac.com.
