Crazy 8, Crystal Lake South,
Dundee-Crown play to wild 4-4 draw
Foes Canfield, Dearborn star in important Fox Valley match
By Matt Misiek
CARPENTERSVILLE – The atmosphere at the Dundee-Crown pitch on Thursday afternoon felt similar to the ancient Roman Colosseum.
The layout of the soccer complex has a slope from the spectator area down to the playing surface, so the supporters have an elevated view of the action.
In addition, soccer weapons (as in legs and heads) were skillfully used between the host Chargers and visiting Crystal Lake South in the Fox Valley Conference battle.
All that was missing was Russell Crowe’s famous quote from the hit movie Gladiator, “Are you not entertained?”
The game was about as entertaining as one can be. But after 100 minutes, neither team could lay claim they were the victor after a 4-4 draw.
Crystal Lake South (10-3-3, 4-0-1) actually had the better chances to take all the standings points during the Golden Goal overtime sessions. Three minutes into the first overtime, a handball was called in the penalty area on the Chargers, giving the Gators a penalty kick.
Senior forward Alex Canfield stepped to the spot and drilled a low drive that pinged off the left post and back to Canfield, whose follow up header also went wide.
“I think I just hooked it a little too much to the left,” said Canfield of his strike. “It was just unlucky.”
The Gators put a few more efforts at Mejia courtesy of midfielder Sam Bahnfleth, including a drive from the right side of the 18 that Mejia held in the 95th minute.
Chargers forward Jason Miller has the best chance for his side in the extra sessions. A low drive from the top of the 18 during the 87th minute was saved and then covered by Gators goalie Carson Hill.
The missed penalty kick did not diminish the standout day for Canfield, who notched a hat-trick. The 2018 Chicagoland Soccer Player of the Year nominee started the scoring in the 5th minute.
“I shimmied like I was going to go down line, like I was going to put in a cross,” Canfield said. “But then I cut back to my right and shot. It possibly got a piece of the defender, but a goal is still a goal.”
His second goal came in the 46th minute tied the game at 3-3. He came off of an excellent cross from right midfielder Garett Schneider, who put the ball right on his striker’s foot. Canfield smashed it into the top part of the net.
After Dundee-Crown took a 4-3 lead on an absolute laser strike from 20 yards from forward Roland Dearborn, Canfield took to the air and met a Colton Weidner corner kick to redirect it and launch the ball into the top left corner six minutes later in the 61st minute
In between the Canfield goals, Schneider had a beautiful goal of his own in the 21st minute that gave the Gators their last lead at 2-1. He placed his left-footed shot from the right of the 18 up and over Mejia into the left corner.
“Every practice, coach Allen wants us to work on the technical side of the game,” Schneider added. “It was my moment to step up and focus on the details of the technical ability that he makes us work on every game.”
Crystal Lake South coach Brian Allen was very pleased with Schneider's overall effort.
"I thought Garett was exceptional for us with his energy" he said. "Very happy that he was rewarded with a key goal and fantastic assist to Alex on that key 3rd goal to get us even in the 2nd half.
All of the goals that Dundee-Crown (10-4-1, 4-1-1) scored had the involvement of Dearborn. Prior to his sublime goal, Dearborn was instrumental in the build-up in the first half. Dearborn used his speed to chase down a ball in the left part of the 18 and cross to fellow forward Julian Saldana who slotted the ball past Hill in the 11th minute.
The same combination struck in the 32nd minute as the senior Dearborn found the junior Saldana open in the middle of the 18 again for an easy finish. Dearborn, the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match, turned on the jets again and was able to locate forward Miller, who had subbed into the game andscored from 15 yards.
“We had a system going into this game about how we were going to play Crystal Lake South,” Dearborn said. “We did exactly what we were planning on doing on offense. However we just gave up too many goals on defense, and we need to work harder on that.”
Dundee-Crown coach Rey Vargas has been pleased all year with the Dearborn-Saldana link.
“They’ve been combining all season,” he added. “It’s great to see them connect the way they do. It is the first year of them playing together so it is really amazing to see them find each other.”
Several members of the Jacobs soccer team were scouting the game very interested in the outcome. With this result, Jacobs continues to sit atop the Fox Valley with a 5-0-0 record.
Crystal Lake South's Allen is still very optimistic when looking ahead.
“We came back a few times in the game, and that is huge,” Allen noted. “We got the point. We’re still able to control our destiny in conference play. That’s what you want, with four games left. We’re pleased with it. Probably a fair result of the play today.”
“Roland (Dearborn) did a lot of good things for them, while Alex (Canfield) was special for us. It was a good game on both sides.”
Dundee-Crown’s next game is a nonconference match 1 p.m. Saturday at Elgin. Crystal Lake South, ranked 12th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, has a home nonconference game on Saturday against Buffalo Grove at 11 a.m.
