Gators remain blemish free in FVC with road win

HAMPSHIRE – Since Tuesday was a school night, officials turned off the lights minutes after the Whip-Purs completed their match with Crystal Lake South to encourage everyone to get home at a sensible time.
During the game, the Gators scored goals in a timely fashion and shut down Hampshire’s offense to win the Fox Valley Conference contest 3-0.
“I thought our attitude and effort were pretty good. We controlled the tempo in terms of our work rate and we kind of pride ourselves on being a very hard-working team,” Crystal Lake South coach Brian Allen said. “I thought we were able to tilt the field by doing it and turned things to our advantage.
“It started in the midfield when we were able to win the first and second balls and settle it out. I also liked that we're moving them side to side and stretching them and that created more space.”
Hampshire coach Chayanne Martinez agreed Crystal Lake South was disciplined.
“They are always very well-organized, and we just couldn't contain them,” he said. “We had a few unlucky set pieces scored against us, and that was a difference-maker for us”
Crystal Lake South (9-2-1, 3-0-0) took control of the game in the opening minutes of the match. Most of the action in the first half took place on the Whip-Purs’ side of the pitch.
The Gators quickly adjusted to Hampshire’s style of play.
“We had to adjust to the way they knocked around the ball around and then take our moments when we had them. I thought we moved the ball pretty well,” said Allen. “We were getting a lot of people involved so they couldn't key on one area. Once we start to do that, it opened things up so for some of our special playmakers to go and do their thing.”
The Gators took a 1-0 lead at the 17th minute on Matt Horvath’s first goal of the season. After taking a feed from Nolan Getzinger, the senior forward buried a shot from the left corner of the penalty box.
Horvath was denied a second goal minutes later when his uncontested shot was scooped up by Whip-Purs goalkeeper Kyle Schultz. The senior keeper finished the night with six saves.
Hampshire (4-8-3, 1-2-0) rallied in the closing minutes of the first half. With less than two minutes until the intermission, Diego Colin got past the Gator’s defense, but his shot was stopped by keeper Logan Horvath. Whip-Pur Juan Alva followed with a free kick from midfield that went over the cross bar.
Martinez said the Whip-Purs were lucky Schultz was in their net.
“Schultz was the reason we stayed in the game,” said the Hampshire coach. “We were able to fight back as the clock was running down, because he saved quite a few one-on-one situations which I'm more than happy with.”
Allen felt his squad contributed to their host’s offensive outburst.
“I think it was part of us taking a micro nap and not stepping together as we should be as all 11,” said the Gators coach. “But that's also a credit to Hampshire. When you give them some time and space, they can move the ball.”
The Gators dominance continued in the second half. Getzinger gave Crystal Lake South some breathing room with his scoredat the 28:30 mark of the period for a 2-0 lead. The sophomore corralled a Deven Tinajero corner kick for his sixth strike of the season.
“Dev played a good ball in, and the backline missed it, and I was just able to put it away,” said Getzinger, who earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match award.
Allen explained why he thought Getzinger deserved the honor.
“I think he was doing a lot of good things in terms of the attack and also in the second half especially when Hampshire started to get some rhythm,” said the Crystal Lake South coach “He was able to sit in and disrupt and really play how we want our eight to play in two-way soccer. He did that very efficiently, and he got that goal that increased the cushion from one to two.”
Michal Dejworek ended the scoring in the 61st minute. After snaring a through-ball in the center of the field from Tom Coughlin, Dejworek took a shot from 30 yards that found the back of the net.
Getzinger felt increased ball movement in the second half helped his team’s offense.
“When we moved the ball and passed it around quicker that really broke their backline down, and we got a lot more opportunities,” the sophomore said.
Martinez agreed the Gators’ ball management challenged his defense.
“Too many times we left a gap in the center between our defense and our center mids,” said the Whip-Purs’ coach “We need to make sure that we come back quicker.”
Allen lauded his defense’s effort.
“We had the discipline to stay in front of them. We know they have some speed and skill and if we got behind they could be dangerous” the coach said. “We just wanted to make sure we kept everything in front of us to force them into tough angles and tough shots, and we trusted our keeper if they're shooting from a distance.”
Gators defender and co-captain Tomasz Slawek said the backline continues to improve.
“We've really been honing our defensive skills and trying to lock it down. We've had some unfortunate things happen. It's not losses but we gave up a goal here, a goal there. We try to keep zeros as much as possible,” Slawek said. “They had one dangerous player (Juan Martinez), and we were able to keep him at bay but most of the game.”
Hampshire’s coach agreed the Gators defenders were well disciplined.
“It was tough. They have a very organized backline. Our forwards couldn't turn on the ball like we usually do, and there were a lot of small miscues from the runs that we do,” Martinez said. “They just did a very good job forcing us to make mistakes off the ball. They had very good players against us in the midfield, too.”
