Coughlin bros., CLS push past Marian C.
Late goals help Gators earn tourney championship berth

WAUCONDA -- When you cough, the polite and hygienically correct thing to do is cover your mouth.
For opponents of the Crystal Lake South Gators, Thursday afternoon’s matchup at Wauconda’s Porten Field against Marian Central served as a reminder that when Coughlins are on the field, in the form of brothers Ryan and Tom, you need to cover your net.
At the 2:17 mark, senior Ryan, one of the team captains, unleashed a low drive from 30 yards that whistled to the right of Hurricanes goalie Caleb Taylor and into the bottom corner of the net.
Approximately 65 minutes later with the Gators up by a goal, but needing another to avoid any potential tiebreaker scenarios for a finals berth in the Alonso Sanchez Memorial Tournament, freshman Tom took a great pass from Ryan and slotted a shot past Taylor.
The Coughlins’ exploits helped propel Crystal Lake South, ranked ninth in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, to a 4-1 victory, the top spot in tourney Group B and a date in the championship match of the tournament Saturday afternoon. Their opponent will be decided after Friday afternoon’s Group A tilt between Wauconda and North Chicago, whose match was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Tom, who stands only 5-foot-1, stood tall against Hurricane defenders, made plenty of plays besides the goal with his footwork on the ball and earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honor.
“We connected the ball and moved it around,” he said. “We created most of our chances, and we found the switch, and the defenders were isolated one-on-one. That’s how we created our second and third goals of the game. As a team, moving the ball around worked well for us.”
Crystal Lake South (4-0-1) coach Brian Allen had high praise for brother Ryan, who garnered Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honors one week ago against Streamwood, after the game.
“Ryan’s been on fire,” Allen said. “He is our energy guy, we build off of him. He is a four-year leadership guy. He might not get on the stat sheet all the time, but
he got the great assist to his brother and created havoc and many chances.”
The Gators’ second goal came courtesy of sophomore Tyler Getzinger 22 minutes into the match. The goal was set up by a great cross from the left side of the 18 by junior Colton Weidner. Taylor managed to get his fingers on the cross, but the ball fell to Getzinger who simply tapped it over the line.
Junior Alex Canfield added the fourth goal with 1:08 left in the contest. The forward showed great individual effort when he chased a ball in the left midfield and streaked down the side. He cut back in and drilled the ball into the top-right corner. This breakthrough came after several of Canfield’s earlier efforts either struck the crossbar or went narrowly wide.
“Alex’s work rate was excellent,” said Allen. “I think his finishing needs a little sharpening, but that goes with his tempo.”
Marian Central (0-5-0) got their goal 19 seconds after Getzinger’s goal to halve its deficit to 2-1. A long ball was mishandled by Gator goalie Oscar Estrada and fell to the feet of sophomore Aidan Robertson at the top of the 18. Robertson made no mistake with the finish.
“Everybody’s putting in the effort,” said Marian Central head coach Art Dixon. “They are getting in the positions that they need to be. We do have a lot of youth on our team and that does lead to some breakdowns, but they go out and give everything they they have.”
One player for the Hurricanes who is undoubtably giving everything he has is Taylor. In the 42nd minute, the junior goalie made a point-blank save on the Gators’ Garett Schneider to keep the score at 2-1. With seven saves, this was another solid effort for Taylor and came off of a 12-save effort in a 1-0 rain-shortened Group B loss to Palatine on Tuesday.
“You just have to keep going,” Taylor said. “You have to get up after every save. If you miss the first one, you need to make sure that you get the second one. You just have to work hard.
“Every time I make a save I say 'Good job.' But I treat each shot like it’s the first shot, not knowing where it’s going to go.”
As for the Gators, coach Allen wasn’t finished giving praise, especially to his bench where everyone saw significant minutes.
“Nick (Langdon) was held out today as precautionary, nothing major. Andrew Edge (left defender) was rock solid. Evan Carlson has been solid in the middle with Nick. J-Wash (Justin Washington) stepped up today with some minutes.”
“Tommy McSweeney was recovering from pneumonia, and he played well competing for the defender job. Also, give credit to Jack (Wruck) playing the full game, not always sharp early but he got going as the game went on.”
When asked about how life is in the top half of the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, coach Allen said that the focus is kept on the finish line.
“It’s a great accolade for the guys,” Allen said. “But we have to continue to focus on getting better. It’s about where we finish the season. It is making sure that we focus on getting better. Some players achieved that today.”
