No place like home for CLS in win over D-C
Getzinger penalty kick nets Gators’ 2nd straight win

CRYSTAL LAKE – It’s a story shared by some teams in the Chicagoland area this Spring.
Home games are not always played at the host’s actual field.
Crystal Lake South finally had the opportunity to play on its grassy soccer complex Tuesday afternoon in this unusual spring season. It was the first home game at the “The Swamp” since October 25, 2019, when the Gators won their regional final against Prairie Ridge en route to their 2019 Class AA state-runnerup finish.
“It’s different,” said Crystal Lake South coach Brian Allen. “To see the field in spring, there’s a different element to it with all of the funny hops and bounces. But we take great pride. We love having the school in the backdrop with our home crowd, playing the best we can and defending ‘The Swamp.’”
In 2019, Crystal Lake South and Dundee-Crown played to a very entertaining 4-4 draw in Carpentersville. This matchup was every bit as entertaining, but with a major difference -- the Gators managed two second half goals to overtake the visiting Chargers 3-2.
In the 61st minute and with the visitors (4-3-2, 4-2-0) leading 2-1, Dundee-Crown coach Rey Vargas got in a verbal dispute with center referee Joe Skaja and was shown a card for continuing to argue after a warning.
The card may have been yellow, but it may have turned out to be a green light; Crystal Lake South (4-2-1, 3-2-1) turned the tide of the game behind senior midfielder Tyler Getzinger.
Within two minutes of the card, Getzinger stood over a free kick directly left of the 18-yard box. He drove a low-ball that found the foot of sophomore center back Josh Washington, who slotted it past Charger goalie Cristo Varela Viveros to even the match 2-2.
“Our center backs know defense first,” Allen said. “But they know when they are brought forward, they may have something bounce their way or have the opportunity to get their head to it. They just need to be opportunistic, and it was great for Wash (Washington) to take advantage of his opportunity and get us level there.”
It should be noted that Washington nearly had a goal in the 54th minute as his second-effort header inside the 18 sailed over the crossbar off of a rebound.
After junior midfielder Tom Coughlin was brought down inside the 18 in the 66th minute, Getzinger sealed his status as Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match by cooly placing the penalty in the bottom right corner past Viveros.
“It’s our guy, the free kick guy,” junior midfielder Deven Tinajero said of Getzinger. “He’s great with the free kicks. He knows where to place them. He’s amazing.”
“We also talk about putting it in a dangerous spot and seeing what happens,” Allen added regarding Getzinger’s set piece efforts. “We were able to get a bounce or two today that went our way.”
Junior midfielder Sam Bahnfleth opened the scoring in the game in the 11th minute. After a give-and-go with Coughlin, he drilled a low shot from the right 18 into the bottom left corner.
“It all started with our defense playing the ball up field,” Bahnfleth said of the build-up.
“Tom (Coughlin) was able to shake off a few defenders, and was able to play me a perfect ball. I saw the defender far away from me, so I took the shot. I got a really nice bounce, and it went in.”
The Gators will play without the services of Coughlin for their next game against Crystal Lake Central on April 6. The junior picked up two yellow cards during the match: one for excessive force into the back on the player; the other for a delay of game due to kicking the ball away and preventing a restart with two minutes remaining.
Dundee-Crown equalized only 3 ½ minutes after Bahnfleth’s opener.
Junior forward Juan David Pacheco sized up a free kick from 20 yards from goal and drove his shot around the wall. Crystal Lake South goalkeeper Dominic Timberlake was only able to deflect it forward where it went right into the path of senior midfielder Dominic Conejo, who tapped in the rebound.
“
There were times in the game where he (Conejo) kind of disappeared,” Vargas said. “I told him that you have to get the ball at your feet. You have to demand it and get moving.
“I think in the second half he did a much better job of finding his feet and finding others. He showed much better and gave us better opportunities.”
Conejo responded to his coach’s advice in a big way right after halftime. He took a corner from the left and drove it past the Gator defense, where junior forward Ashton Ajroja re-directed past Timberlake inside the six.
The Chargers nearly pulled off a late equalizer in the 79th minute. Working the ball inside their 18, a cross from the right side went through a crowd and by Timberlake, but Tinajero was in a supreme position at the goalmouth to clear it off the line.
Dundee-Crown junior keeper Viveros made some really fantastic stops among his five saves. He lunged to his left to deny a low Bahnfleth drive in the 37th minute that was going towards the bottom right corner. He also had to make a save directly off of a wind-aided corner kick by Tinajero, reaching up high to tip away.
“It was challenging,” Viveros said of that specific effort. “I couldn’t grab the ball. It was going from side to side due to the wind factor in that specific situation.
“I like having a lot of shots come my way to save, however, it was unfortunate that our chances did not go. I think the score line was fair.”
Dundee-Crown will also get a chance to play their first home matchup in Carpentersville since 2019 on April 6 when take on Fox Valley Conference leaders Jacobs, ranked no. 23 in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25.
Crystal Lake South takes a similar break until it hosts Crystal Lake Central at 6:30 p.m. April 6 for Senior Night.
