Deerfield comes close vs. Glenbrook S.
Warriors fall 2-1 in Glenbrook Cup semifinal
By Hunter Tickel
GLENVIEW -- In the first 25 minutes of its Glenbrook Cup semifinal on Friday, Deerfield got off to the start it needed to get in position to beat host Glenbrook South.
However, a brace from Titans junior midfielder Makayla Stadler resulted in a 2-1 come-from-behind win for Glenbrook South.
“They went toe-to-toe with us,” Titans coach Seong Ha said. “I knew after last year’s result (a 6-0 Titans win in the Glenbrook Cup) that this was going to be a long match. The first two minutes definitely (showed) that.”
Deerfield, ranked 18th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, started the game with its foot on the gas and nearly scored in the opening seconds of the game. Junior forward Julia Neal fed senior winger Samantha Linn on the right side with a through-ball. Linn’s centering pass found sophomore midfielder Mallory Sawyer for an open look at the penalty spot that she hit at Glenbrook South junior keeper Libbie Vanderveen.
“They came out really strong right off the bat,” Stadler said. “They almost scored in the first 48 seconds of the game. We kind of underestimated them a little bit. They came out super strong. We were just like: ‘Woah.’”
Deerfield (13-3-1) continued to apply pressure as junior midfielder Rachel Levin came off the bench to provide a spark.
“Somewhere we have really grown is our work ethic and positivity as a team,” Linn said. “We really emphasize, whether you’re on the bench or starting, it is really important. It’s been a really big thing, because it helps us have really strong energy throughout all of us. Even some of our energy starts on our bench.”
A case in point came in the 22nd minute. Levin came in and threaded the needle with a through-ball to Neal, who calmly put away her breakaway chance with a bouncing shot to the far-post inside netting.
Seventh-ranked Glenbrook South (12-1-4) had a response. Stadler scored seven minutes later when in one motion she turned and chipped a shot from the left side of the box that senior Deerfield keeper Karley Morris could only manage to get a hand on as it bounced in.
While Deerfield looked hungrier with more energy and a slight edge in possession in the initial 20 minutes, Glenbrook South slowly started to impose its will on the Deerfield backline.
In the second half, the Deerfield offense continued to look dangerous when it found Linn on the right side. Typically sophomore attacking midfielder Malori Killoren found teammate from the middle of the park.
“We knew that they had a pretty dominant midfield,” Stadler said. “We had to beat them on the outsides, and that’s what we did to get our goals. Learning our opponent helped us win.”
It helps that she and Killoren, an all-conference choice in the Central Suburban League last year as a freshman, play for the same club, FC United.
“I don’t see a whole lot different from (Killoren), other than she’s got a year under her belt,” Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. “She’s confident, she’s composed, she can do a lot.”
Killoren leads the Warriors with 16 goals and nine assists in 17 games this year.
“She was amazing today,” Stadler said. “I thought she was incredible for a sophomore. The way she plays, she is not like a sophomore. She’s fun to watch. I wish I wasn’t watching her as an opponent.”
Veteran running mate Linn, who has five goals and 14 assists this year, is the playmaker and leader on the outside that helps Killoren thrive.
In the 46th minute, Linn sent a half volley from a tight angle on the right side of the box that forced Vanderveen to parry the shot over the bar. Nine minutes later, Linn and Killoren applied pressure that almost led to a go-ahead score.
In the 62nd minute, Glenbrook South found the game-winner. Stadler stroked her second finish of the game, pouncing on a loose ball in the box. She controlled it with her chest, took an additional touch, and send it inside the far post.
In the final two minutes, Deerfield had two opportunities from Killoren and senior defender Betsy McKinney that went unfinished.
“The last three minutes was manic,” Ha said. “It was craziness, (us) screaming clear the ball. We don’t clear the ball, and we’re doing not so smart things.”
This tightly contested game was a complete turnaround for Deerfield from the previous season’s match, which was Killoren’s first taste of the North Shore rivalry.
The second-year starter, who entered the program a year after Deerfield’s second place state finish, appreciates the progress the team has made since a 9-10-4 campaign last season.
“Year Two everyone is trying so hard, because last year, everyone was coming off a runner-up (finish),” Killoren said. “Everyone was kind of taking it a bit easier. This year everyone has to put forth their best effort and play for each other every game.”
