Deerfield fights back for road draw
Warriors brace themselves in game 2-2 draw at Maine South
By Hunter Tickel
PARK RIDGE-- After falling behind 2-0 in the first 14 minutes, Deerfield scored twice in the last 13 minutes to force a 2-2 tie with Maine South.
“We decided that we were not going to lose the game today, you love that response,” Deerfield coach Rich Grady said. “Now if I could figure out how to avoid digging a 2-0 hole, I’d be a genius.”
Senior right winger Samantha Linn hit a corner kick to the middle of the box 10 yards from the goal. After senior midfielder Haley Emory headed the ball toward the goal, and it was deflected by Maine South, sophomore center midfielder Malori Killoren headed home the loose ball in the six-yard box for the game-tying goal in the 74th minute.
“It means a lot from losing by a lot of goals to them last year,” Killoren said in reference to last year’s 5-1 defeat. “We really wanted to pay back this year. We tied it and were down 2-0. We all really wanted it and put our best effort into it.”
It was Killoren’s team-high 22nd goal of the season, and Linn’s team-leading 21st assist.
Six minutes earlier, Warriors senior defender Betsy McKinney sparked the team’s comeback by playing junior forward Marissa Hyland in with a through-ball. She scored on the breakaway to the right corner of the goal from 15 yards.
As quickly as the Warriors (16-3-2) found their mojo and erased the 2-0 deficit, they fell behind the Hawks (8-6-5) even faster.
In the fourth minute of the game, Deerfield lost the ball after a set piece and set up an opportune Maine South counterattack. Hawks senior midfielder Maddie Malinowski played a through-ball over the top that senior forward Annika Schmidt finished from 15 yards.
Malinowski continued to pick apart Deerfield from the middle in early portion of the game, sending through-balls over the top after being given time and space.
In the 14th minute, South went up 2-0 when senior midfielder Elyse Bartucci lifted a pass over the Warriors backline that senior midfielder Hannah Northfell found and finished from 11 yards after she broke away from the Deerfield defense.
Two minutes later, the Hawks were nearly through again, but Deerfield keeper Karley Morris collected the loose ball eight yards off her line.
Shortly afterward, Warriors coach Rich Grady decided he had seen enough from his starters and benched everyone except Morris. This sent a message that resonated and demonstrated his team’s depth. The Warriors are 25 deep according to their coach.
“We normally don’t start games like that,” Killoren said. “They scored really early. Then we got down on ourselves, and then they scored again. We didn’t have our rhythm, and none us were talking. Coach calmed us down and told us that we could do this. We had to regroup.”
The reserves steadied the backline and provided stability in the midfield to disrupt the flow that Maine South had established.
“They had two counterattacks, and they broke just us down way too easily,” said McKinney, who earned the Chicagoland MVP of the Match honor for icebreaking assist and defense. “He (Grady) has done that before where our nonstarters have come in and played with a lot of energy. That’s exactly what we needed. I think we did well; we didn’t let in any (more) goals.”
In the 19th minute, Deerfield earned its first corner when junior midfielder Naomi Fischoff sent a dangerous ball in the box to junior forward Julia Neal, who couldn’t get a shot on goal.
Maine South went looking for the backbreaker five minutes later. Malinowski sent a ball over the top to senior defender Angelina Moore, whose progress was slowed by senior defender Meg Feldman’ and junior backliner Dylan Sachs’ recovery. The pair’s work deflected the 25-yard shot harmlessly to the right corner.
In the next minute, Deerfield senior forward Chloe Cappas was the first of the starters to return to the game.
Maine South’s Bartucci got behind the Deerfield defense to the left touchline on a pass from Malinowski in the 30th minute. The Warriors defense recovered and cleared the pass from the middle of the box.
Six minutes later, all of Deerfield’s starters returned to set the stage for a tight, closing half.
At 42 minutes, Killoren struck her team’s first shot on goal from 20 yards.
A minute later on a designed set piece, Linn played a corner on the ground to the top of the box that Cappas dummied. Emory got a shot but hit it over the bar from 16 yards.
Against the pressure, Maine South was forced to switch its formation and sit numbers behind the ball under the Deerfield attack of four forwards and four midfielders with a stopper and a sweeper in back.
“We (got) a little overconfident coming into the second half even though you warn them that they are going to come at you,” Maine South coach J.J. Crawford said. “The girls think it is under control. We weathered the first 10 (minutes), in fairness. They still had the flow. At least we knew it was coming. (Grady) pulled all those numbers up, to allow them to play two in the back.”
Nine minutes later in a rare second half chance from the Hawks, senior defender Olivia Sellergren took a shot from 32 yards on the right side that went inches over the bar.
In the 57th minute, Deerfield was back after it. Hyland flashed a cross through the box that was deflected at the far post before it could reach Linn on the right side.
South continued to look for goals on the counterattack. In the 61st minute, Malinowski sprung Schmidt before a sliding tackle from her left side by junior defender Shayna Wood prevented a prime opportunity.
Two minutes later, Deerfield continued to pour on the offense. Killoren found Linn on the outside. She sidestepped Maine South forward Katie Wolinski and flashed a dangerous cross across the face of the goal that was knocked out for a corner.
Following Deerfield’s pair of goals to knot the game, South nearly found the winner with five minutes left, but Deerfield sophomore defender Mallory Sawyer cleared a ball off the line on a corner. Later Morris made a composed save on a header to preserve the draw.
