Glenbrook North notches
emphatic win at Deerfield
Vinny Sabbione brace, 2 assists lead Spartans to 7-2 win
By Bill McLean
DEERFIELD — Glenbrook North’s 7-2 defeat of Deerfield on Thursday afternoon deserved an exclamation point and an asterisk.
It merited the punctuation mark because the visiting Spartans frayed the nets at sun-splashed Paul Adams Field.
And it warranted the starry symbol because Deerfield played much better than the lopsided result indicated.
Actually it could have had a third denotation because it marked the first meeting between rookie head coaches.
“That final score is deceptive,” Deerfield coach Ryan Crane said. “We’re not a team that’s five goals worse than Glenbrook North. Glenbrook North punished every mistake we made in the back.
“As weird as it might sound,” he added, “I’m happy with how we played today.”
Glenbrook North (10-4-2) — an honorable mention club in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 — got off to a joyful start in the Central Suburban League cross-over match and talliedf three goals in the first 27 minutes.
The Spartans conducted a scoring clinic on the Warriors’ Teacher Appreciation Day of all days.
“Great beginning,” Glenbrook North coach Paul Gibbs said of goals from junior midfielders Steven Rhee and Ian Lee, and reserve senior midfielder Nareg Sarrafian. “But we turned flat after going up 3-0.
“So I put in lots of subs. Our subs came in and made an impact.”
Sarrafian’s goal was his first on varsity. It came moments after senior forward Vinny Sabbione’s shot-on-goal ricocheted off Deerfield sophomore goalkeeper Xander Yang in the 27th minute. Sarrafian was smack dab in the middle of the box when he struck the rebound shot.
Glenbrook North junior midfielder Yianny Caparos netted his first varsity goal in the 58th minute to stretch the visitors’ advantage to 6-2.
“Good feeling,” Caparos said of his reaction to the milestone goal. “It boosted my confidence.”
Rhee got things rolling with his right-footed, far-post volley off a feed from Sabbione in the 12th minute.
Rhee was stationed just inside a top quadrant of the 18 when his diagonal liner beat a diving Yang.
Lee upped the lead to 2-0 six minutes later, blasting a 15-yard near-post shot home following his weaving rush.
Deerfield (6-9-1) got on the board on an eight-yarder off the noggin of senior forward Ryder Coleman in the 33rd minute.
Reserve senior defender Matthew Neumann — who’d take over for an injured Yang in goal in the second half — earned the assist via a spot-on corner kick.
Glenbrook North led 3-1 at the break and after intermission needed only five minutes to essentially announce, “We have no plans of letting up.”
Spartans sophomore back Chase Petersen whipped a 25-yard throw-in that Sabbione turned into a 2-yard tally off his head, making it a 4-1 contest.
“We called that our secret weapon,” a Spartans bench player said of Petersen’s prodigious initiator. “I guess we can’t call it that anymore.”
Deerfield responded three minutes later by essentially
announcing, “We plan to stick around.”
Warriors sophomore forward Christian Castro’s rebound goal after a Coleman shot beat Spartans senior keeper Max Bachenheimer (six saves).
“Deerfield worked hard and didn’t throw in the towel,” Gibbs said.
The visitors netted the final three goals in a 16-minute stretch. Sabbione rebound goal after a Sam Lappin shot created bookend goals with his twin brother and senior midfielder Tomas. Caparos scored between them.
A number of Spartans could have pocketed Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match of honors. That was whittled down to two: Vinny Sabbione for his downright busy and highly productive two-goal, two-assist effort, and Lappin, a junior midfielder, for being a rock on defense and providing an assist. He went up for a pair of
head clears on free kicks in the first 10 minutes and collected a steal shortly thereafter deep in Spartans terrain.
“We’re deep,” Lappin said Thursday, two days after Gibbs’ crew tied no. 8 New Trier 1-1 in Northfield and denied the Trevians a sixth-straight conference title. “It’s nice knowing our subs can come in and do the good things they do.”
It’s super nice having Lappin on your side.
“He’s a beast,” Caparos said.
“Sam,” Sarrafian added, “wins every tackle.”
Glenbrook North, like Deerfield, deployed its backup keeper in the second half but not because of an injury.
Senior Josh Glen entered in relief of Bachenheimer midway through the second half and finished with three saves, including spectacular back-to-back stops in the 76th minute. Deerfield dented a post once before and once after the saves.
“We dominated there at the end,” Crane said.
But Glenbrook North was too talented, and too quick to capitalize on opportunities.
And too emphatic.
Make that, emphatic!
Glenbrook North, 4-0-1 in its last five games, visits St. Ignatius on Saturday at noon; Deerfield visits Warren — another honorable mention team in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 — Monday at 7 p.m.
“Quite a schedule I put together for our team, huh?” said Crane, in his first year at that helm at his alma mater.
“Glenbrook North and Warren reached out to me (in the spring), looking for nonconference games. I was all for it. Why not? We want to play good teams.”
