GBS finds answer not blowing
in the wind vs. Lake Forest
Titans keep ball on ground for game-winner in 1-0 win
By Neil Milbert
LAKE FOREST -- Gusty south winds in excess of 50 miles-per-hour swept through Varsity Stadium on Thursday evening but the soccer match between visiting Glenbrook South and Lake Forest in the Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Classic was anything but a blowout.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between in the Group C match that saw Glenbrook South emerge with a 1-0 victory thanks to Carolyn Cameranesi’s first goal of the season in the 19th minute and solid defensive play in front of goalkeeper Bella Crist.
Glenbrook South (5-6-0) finished 1-2-0 with three points in group play. Lake Forest (2-6-0) wound up 0-3-0.
“This was by far the windiest game I ever played in,” Cameranesi said. “We tried to keep the ball on the ground, be smart with our passes and make them crisp.”
Crist liked what se saw from her goal line: “Today we connected, and we played our parts.”
Although the Titans had the wind at their backs in the first half, it wasn’t a factor when they scored their goal. Unmarked Anna Durow moved in from the left corner and sent a pass to Cameranesi in the goal mouth where she used her right foot to tap the ball past goalkeeper Sarah Constantine.
“Coming from outside to inside allows our middle players to make runs,” Cameranesi said. “When Anna played the ball, I made sure I got a touch on it before the defender did. One of our keys to winning this game was winning 50/50 balls.”
When the pass was made Constantine found herself in a no-win situation.
“Everything happened so fast,” said the Scouts keeper. “They came in from the weak side, and she was pretty much open.”
Seven minutes into the second half, Glenbrook South had its best opportunity to extend the lead. Bella Gemignani attacked from the midfield to confront Constantine, but the poised sophomore goalkeeper corralled her shot.
Glenbrook South became even more bullish on its defense after the break.
“In the second half (when Lake Forest had the wind at their backs), we made an emphasis on keeping the shutout by not giving up easy chances,” Titans coach Mark Daniels said. “We wanted to keep possession of the ball. I told them ‘Focus on your first touch. Have an idea where you can pass the ball.’
“Both teams had the wind factor (to contend with), and we have not done well this season in penetrating for shots.”
Glenbrook South’s season statistics underscore their coach’s critique. After opening the season with a 5-0 victory against Addison Trail and scoring three more goals in their 3-0-0 start, they have tallied only five others. In their two prior games in pool play, they were shut out by Loyola and undefeated pool-winner Lyons.
For Lake Forest the scoring problem has been even more acute as attested by four earlier shutout losses.
“Today the (extremely windy) conditions dictated the game and there wasn’t much offense for either team,” Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said. “I thought they had better play in the midfield in the beginning and were more aggressive.
“We came on a little at the end of the first half and at the end of the game.”
The most threatening shots that Crist faced came on back-to-back Lake Forest corner kicks by Riley Hoskins early in the first half and back-to-back shots from the field by Kiki Patton in the second half but the senior handled the challenges with no problems.
Titans defender Ashley Ciss was the most impressive backliner in the defensive-oriented struggle that was dictated by the unrelenting wind.
“Ashley is a versatile player who can play inside or out,” pointed out Daniels, who also praised the performance of his other defensive stalwarts Mia DeMattia and Caitlyn Antman.
For the Scouts, Sophie Benjakul, Charlotte Andress and Hanna Sands stood out in the defensive third.
A switch in venues did not benefit Lake Forest, who hosted the game after it was canceled at Glenbrook South on Wednesday due to the inclement weather.
