Grayslake Central frosh Marynevych

GRAYSLAKE -- Apparently Daniel Marynevych is a quick study when it comes to high school rivalry games.
The freshman forward stepped forward and made sure hits mates left the field a winner with all three goals in the host Rams 3-2 win over Grayslake Central in the Northern Lake County Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night.
After his hat-trick, the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match built his season total to seven goals in his first six varsity games.
"I dedicate a lot of it to my teammates," Marynevych said. "It's amazing to be playing (as a freshman), happy there's a spot for me. The upperclassman help me out a lot. They help me with everything. They teach and talk to me on how to drop, when to make runs and when to take shots."
For Marynevych playing crosstown foe Grayslake North had a bit more meaning than he may have expected.
"Against our rivals, it's a different type of play, and I've never had this feeling in my life," he said. "It was a crazy game, great all around, and North did great. But, I believe we were the better team and we deserved that win. My teammates helped me out with crosses and rebounds."
Grayslake Central improved to 3-5-0 on the season. Since opening the 2019 campaign 1-5-0, which included playing as the only Class AA team in the stacked Northside College Showcase at New Trier, the Rams have won two in a row.
"This win is big, and it's the first step in conference," Grayslake Central coach Tom Hamilton said. "Obviously, with the way the atmosphere was. North pushes us every time we play them. They work hard, and you have to give them credit for that."
However, this rivalry isn't a bitter one. Each side gave the other pats on the back from the start of the match until the final whistle.
"These kids group up with the other guys," Hamilton said. "I live in the North territory and there nothing but good kids, coaching staff, and they have good character. If it's not the same conference or going up against each other, we root for each other. It's a good district to be in. We feel pretty good to get the 'W,' and they wanted to get it too."
As for the match, Grayslake North (1-4-1, 0-1-0) took a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute. Omar Cordova set up Sam Inmon for the goal.
"I do a lot with these guys from school and playing soccer with them before," Cordova said. "We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough game. It was a good friendly rivalry."
Grayslake Central had to raise its work ethic if it was going to come back and overtake Grayslake North.
"Second half, we knew we had to settle down and play our style," Hamilton said. "We knew off the ball we had to outwork them."
Marynevych stepped up to the task and tied the game at 2-2 in the 51st minute by netting a goal off a rebound.
Then, Marynevych scored the game-winning goal on a header in the 72nd minute. Damian Makowski served the well-placed cross.
Early in the contest, Marynevych had the opening Rams' goal with a tap-in that came after a corner kick from Thomas Ramsey.
Grayslake North found a way to tie up the match in the 30th minute. Off a free kick near midfield, Logan Holevas sent the ball near the top of the box. Connor Smith settled the ball for Cordova, who placed it into the net.
"It's always going to be a test, and it doesn't matter what the records are coming in," Grayslake North coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Both of us, if you look at our schedules, we played tough teams to begin with.
"We wanted to test ourselves. We're not getting what we're hoping for, and we're struggling a little bit. We have to find the belief on both ends."
Grayslake North has had some issues in finishing through the start of season.
"We just have to be calm out there," DeCaluwe said. "For most of the first half and the first part of the second half, we were dominant. Once, they scored we backed off a little bit.
"(Marynevych) was fast as can be and doesn't take anything for granted. He chases everything down. When we're defending and lose our mark, they put it in the back of the net. We just get punished every time.
"It's never a good loss when you start the conference season with your rival. It will dictate what our confidence will be going into our next game. Our kids have to pick their heads up and respond."
The Knights had opportunities to score, but Grayslake Central's defense did a pretty good job against their opponent's attack with a good line of communication from the backline of Tyler Armstrong, Nick Hoffman, Thomas Conlon and Zach Takiff.
"It's really chaotic, you have to make sure people dropping back and covering a man," Hoffman said. "We had to control the entire backline and the midfield around us If we don't communicate with them, then it all falls apart. If you don't have communication, then you will not win a single game."
