Hinsdale C. adapts on fly, edges Fremd
Guido scores overtime game-winner, sub GK Ward stands tall

OAK PARK -- The game is so fleeting and fragmentary, fortunes change in seconds. Hinsdale Central had every reason to fold, victimized by a wicked chain of events. The Red Devils allowed a tying goal in the 77th minute and saw its starting keeper, Fiona Fitzsimons, get banged up on the play.
Fremd senior standout Marta Cholewa smashed home the equalizer on a bang-bang set piece off a long free kick by Elizabeth Prigge. Enter stage left Taylor Ward, like Fitzsimons a sophomore keeper with talent and excellent instincts.
Ward made two standout saves to nullify the Vikings’ late burst and junior Hinsdale Central forward Samantha Guido hammered in a beautiful one-touch ball that sparked the Red Devils’ 3-1 double overtime victory in a Naperville Invitational group play game here Friday night.
The Red Devils (4-5-2) won for the fourth time in their last six games. Unfortunately, Hinsdale Central saw its chance to advance to the quarterfinals end with a 2-0 loss to no. 16 Metea Valley on Saturday for the right to move out of Group H and qualify for the quarterfinal round.
Ward made two brilliant stops against Fremd freshman star forward Caleigh Stone that extended the game to overtime. She played the final three minutes of regulation and the two 10-minute overtime periods.
“Taylor did a great job,” Hinsdale Central coach Bryan Ciesiulka said. “Both of our goalies are always great, and they do a good job of pushing each other in practice. It’s fun to watch them go out there and compete.”
Guido continued her own rapid ascent from a converted defender into a compelling offensive centerpiece for the Red Devils. She earned the Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honor for her game-winner in the 83rd minute.
Forward Camille Lubic slotted a through-ball that Guido controlled in rhythm and made a slashing break toward the Vikings’ goal.
“I was up on my man all the way through and Camilla slipped the ball through, and I took one touch with my right foot, and I shot it right in the back,” Guido said. “It’s just following all the momentum of the play. We were all getting hyped up because it was overtime.
“The way they scored at the end of the game changed our mentality on our style of defending. We had to step back and focus on keeping them in the middle and not let them go to their outlets. It was kind of crazy. I did not expect us to go into overtime and score two goals in the last 20 minutes. We really flipped the switch.”
The riveting climax capped a physical and exceptionally well-played game on both sides that featured two hungry and avid teams playing with skill, toughness and high energy. It was a display of two teams eager to show their development and rapid improvement. Both teams had to be inventive and open in their ability to make adjustments on the fly.
The Vikings’ excellent young keeper, sophomore Jennifer Norris, suffered an injury earlier in the week. The full extent was not apparent until after the Vikings’ loss against Metea Valley Thursday night. Coach Steve Keller had to move junior forward Kennedy Gosell into the role. She performed admirably.
Fremd (4-4-1) rebounded very well from its lopsided defeat Thursday night. The Vikings were aggressive and energized. They generated the more consistent attack throughout the first half. Prigge’s service balls on corners and free kicks created some high pressure, optimal scoring chances.
“We did work really hard,” Cholewa said. “I think as we get further and further into the season, I see us becoming a bigger, better and stronger team. We are getting tougher. I think in every game we get better. We always find a way to take a step forward in some aspect of the game, like connecting the ball or just being calm and being tough.
“In the last couple of games we’ve gotten tougher and tougher.”
Keller also saw a striking difference from the night before. The Vikings made a stand and demonstrated their resolve. Most impressive Fremd never felt sorry for the recent turn of events.
“I was pleased with our effort,” he said. “The effort was great. We had a tough game last night, and we came out hard tonight. I thought it was a really physical game and hard-fought game. It easily could have gone either way. We had our two chances with Stone at the end of the game there. If you put those away it was a different ending.
“We went to overtime, and we had a couple of breakdowns. That’s a quality team, and that is why we play in this tournament to see where we are at.”
Hinsdale Central took advantage of one inexperienced mistake by Gosell. In the 72nd minute, midfielder Madigan Lynch scored her first goal by punching in a ball the Fremd keeper was trying to clear.
“I was just thinking to myself I could force her into a mistake there,” Lynch said. “We were passing the ball around a few minutes before that, and so I thought the goal was well earned in that sense.”
Fremd showed toughness and character striking back in the 77th minute. Fitzsimons blocked the free kick by Prigge. Cholewa eagerly jumped on the rebound and finished with authority despite colliding with Fitzsimons.
“I was kind of hoping the goalie would fumble the first ball, and I’d get a touch on it, and that is what I ended up doing,” Cholewa said.
After Ward was inserted into the game, she made an immediate impact, stretching her body to make a crucial block of Stone. Hinsdale Central sophomore Haley Arnold put the game away with an insurance goal with less than half a minute remaining. It was her second goal of the year.
“In overtime we took control of the game,” Ciesiulka said. The game offered further evidence of the Red Devils’ formidable improvement. Hinsdale Central is now 4-1-1 in its last six games, the only defeat a narrow pool play loss to no. 9 Naperville North at the Lou Malnati's Deep Dish Classic.
“Credit to our athletic department for a really difficult schedule,” he said. “We don’t have any easy games. Every team we play is a very talented team, especially Fremd. Credit to our girls for playing really tough.
“We got the better of them, but it could have gone either way.”
