Hampshire can't slow down Huntley
Whip-Purs 1st team to net 2 goals vs. visitors, still fall 4-2
By Jared Birchfield
HAMPSHIRE – Hampshire accomplished something Tuesday night that no other Huntley opponent has done this season: score more than one goal against the Red Raiders. Going into the Fox Valley Conference match, Huntley shut out nine foes and allowed six others only one goal.
The Whip-Purs found the back of the next twice, but the offensive output was not enough. Led by a three-goal surge in a six-minute period in the second half, the visitors won 4-2.
At the 26:11 mark of the second half, Huntley’s Hayes Porsche took a 30-yard shot on goal from the far sideline that Hampshire goalkeeper Kyle Schultz deflected. The Red Raiders’ Vinney Aguirre corralled the rebound and placed it into the net to put his team back on top at 2-1.
John Lengle scored in the 60th minute and 20 seconds later Porsche scored his second goal of the game and no. 16 on the season for a 4-1 lead. The senior forward got it past Schultz on a shot from just inside of the penalty box.
Hampshire coach Chayanne Martinez felt a foul call that led to a Whip-Purs yellow card distracted the players and led to the scoring barrage.
“It was an unfortunate event, but it's part of the game. It's not a sport where you can call timeout and regroup the guys,” Martinez said. “We talked about it during this season. You can't mentally shut off in the game no matter what happens, no matter if you agree with the call or not. You mentally have to be in the game still.
“It happens in the game, no matter what level you’re on. If you shut off for a few minutes you're going to get scored on by a good team.”
Juan Martinez, the leading scorer for Hampshire (7-10-3, 3-4-0), agreed the foul call caused his team to lose its concentration.
“Just losing focus can really hurt you and turn around the game,” the sophomore forward said. “The game gets turned on its head and you end up losing.”
Senior defender Jesse Brown added: “We were playing well throughout and then it came down to those five minutes. There is a bad call, and it kind of got in our heads. We kind of let it go from there.”
Porsche believed the first goal served as a catalyst for the remaining two goals.
“When we scored to make it 2-1, I guess the whole entire team, including me, got motivated,” he said. “That's how we tried for, and got, the other two in two minutes. That was pretty good for our team.”
Porsche opened the game’s scoring with a goal at the 21:31 mark of the first half with a shot from 18 yards.
“I was over on the left side, and Hampshire had the ball,” Porsche said. “I tackled the guy and got the ball. I took one touch and curled it in the back of the net.”
For his two-goal performance, Porsche was named the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match.
After the game, Hampshire was left to wonder what if?
“Their first goal was unfortunate as well. It was a small lapse in thought there and the other three in the five minutes were, too,” the Hampshire coach said. “Other than those moments, we were very solid defensively.”
Juan Martinez scored tied the game with 4:46 left before halftime. Racing from just inside the penalty box, Martinez booted the ball past Huntley keeper Ethan Kornas for his team high 15th goal of the season.
“I usually play as a striker, but sometimes I move the right wing and decide to make those inverted runs. It helped out a lot today,” he said.
“Keep it Simple,” is Huntley’s winning mantra according to Red Raiders coach Matt Lewandowski.
“Playing simple was the key. Sometimes we tend to overcomplicate the game for ourselves,” Lewandowski said “But when you just run hard and you get the first guy you see and you get the ball back, you can score three goals in two minutes.
“I think we just ran hard. We recognized that it was successful. They just kept doing it and it worked.”
The Huntley coach said containing Hampshire’s sophomore scoring star Martinez was another key.
“I think our midfield did a great job handling number 11 (Juan Martinez). I think we shut him out pretty well,” said the Red Raiders coach. “We put Zach Heitkemper to be one-on one with 11, and I think he did a great job.”
Overall, the Whip-Purs coach was pleased with his team’s start.
“The first half we really played well. They have great midfield players themselves. We couldn't let them have the ball for more than one touch,” Martinez said. “We had to press them and make them play away from our goal and counter.
“We knew that they had a very good ball possession, so we knew that we had to have our offense help back on defense to recover the ball on their half.
“We possessed the ball in their half for a little while which we did for a few times in the first half. It was great to see.”
Charlie Terriquez, the only freshman on the Hampshire roster, scored the game’s last goal with 1:12 left to play.
Martinez sees big things ahead for the rookie.
“He's a great player. We're very excited have him on our squad,” said Martinez. “He’s a very hard worker, and he’s very good on the ball as well.”
With the victory, Huntley remains in a tie with Crystal Lake South for first place in the conference. Both teams have a 7-0-0 conference mark and two league games left on the schedule. The pair will square off in the regular-season finale Oct. 12.
Before that, Huntley will need to get by Dundee-Crown on Thursday. The Red Raiders’ overall record is 14-2-0.
“Dundee-Crown is always a challenge for us. I think they're always a challenge for everybody,” Lewandowski said. “They run hard. We'll have to get over that hurdle first, and then we'll see South next Tuesday.”
