Fenwick spreads the wealth
against Lake View
6 Friars score, bench gains valuable experience in 9-1 win
By Michael Wojtychiw
RIVER FOREST – The teams in Wednesday's Class AA Fenwick Sectional semifinal came into sort of a David and Goliath situation.
Lake View entered the matchup at the Dominican University Priory Fields off their program's first regional title courtesy of a 3-1 upset win over second-seeded Westinghouse.
Fenwick, on the other hand, resumed their Class AA regional title streak after a one-year blip last year when the team was placed in the big-school division. The Friars shut out Pritzker last Friday 5-0 in the regional final.
Third-seeded Fenwick used its experience and a fast start to outpace the seventh-seeded Wildcats 9-1, earning the home team a spot in Saturday's sectional final against top-seeded Payton.
With a safe lead in the game, Fenwick was able to work on some things in preparation for Saturday. The Friars also got minutes for many players.
"The girls had a great attitude before the game and started strong," Fenwick manager Craig Blazer said. "The whole thing is headed in the right direction and everyone continues to play better.
"It's priceless to get some of the players playing time, not only for us, but the players, the fans, the families that come. To see your kids play, it's big time."
Kiera Mullarkey got the scoring going for the Friars with just under 11 minutes elapsed when she took a pass from Emily Ortiz and finished.
After Julia Cianci’s 15th-minute finish from (Ortiz), the Henige sisters took over.
Senior Kate scored with 22 minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the half and then assisted her sophomore sister Caroline about five minutes later. About five-and-a-half minutes after that, the two combined again for a goal, this time Caroline fed Kate for her second tally of the day.
"We really clicked today," Kate Henige said. "The mood and vibe before the game was really good. It helped us start off strong, which we've been having trouble with in the past.
"Whenever we're scrimmaging in practice, we're always trying to move the ball around the box and take a shot if there's a chance."
Lake View’s Madeline Barrios got one past Fenwick goalie Audrey Henrichs in the 29th minute, but that was it.
Mia Celio scored with just over six minutes remaining off an assist by Lindsay Drumm to give the Friars a commanding 6-1 lead at the half.
"We're really patient with the ball and wait for the right moment to set the long ball and do smaller passes until it's right," Fenwick's Fiona Roche said. "Patience and communication are really key for us."
Cianci put in her second on the day less than three minutes into the second half as Fenwick continued its offensive onslaught.
Not long after, Caroline Henige, who scored a hat-trick in the regional final against Pritzker, hit a cross bar but then finished a beautiful cross from Roche to give the Friars an 8-1 lead and trigger a time reduction due to the seven-goal differential.
Sarah Zawacki finished off the scoring with 17 minutes remaining when she knocked in a ball in the box off of a corner.
Payton and Fenwick will clash for the sectional title Saturday morning on the Friars' home field.
The Grizzlies will be looking for their second-consecutive sectional title.
Payton comes into the game with a 14-5-3 record. However, three of those losses came against Loyola, Glenbrook North and Evanston, Class 3A teams that played for a sectional title Friday and have a combined 56-8-3 record. They also happened to be the Grizzlies' first three games of the year in the first week of the season.
Fenwick knows it isn't going to be an easy match but is excited for the challenge.
"We just want to keep trying to get better...passing, defending, getting shots on goal," Blazer said. "There's a competitiveness and everyone wants to play. There's an internal hunger within this group, and they know if they're not ready, somebody else will be."
"We have to really focus and not think it's going to be an easy game, because it's not going to be," Kate Henige said. "Everyone is really hyped for it. It's really awesome having the home field, being able to play in a place you're used to playing."
