North Shore Country Day uses
big 2nd half to down Latin
Raiders score 3-straight times, then hold on
By Neil Milbert
WINNETKA -- In the educated opinion of North Shore Country Day coach Kyle Jones: “It was the best 40 minutes of our season and it came at the right time.”
He was talking about the second half of Friday afternoon’s Independent School League match against the Latin School at the Skokie Playfields complex.
After falling behind by one goal in the first half and failing to score before the intermission, the Raiders rallied for three unanswered goals and weathered a counterattack in the closing minutes to emerge with a 3-2 victory.
“In the first half we came out flat,” Jones said. “We didn’t communicate as well as we needed to, and we didn’t perform as well as we needed. In the second half the boys stepped it up.
“It was a little dicey at the end when they scored. They’re a good team, and they’re dangerous.”
The start of the match was delayed by 30 minutes because of a lightning warning and the players received only 10 minutes of warmup time in order to beat the curfew for ending play by just a few minutes.
Latin opened the scoring late in the first half.
Sophomore Reeise Remmer was attacking from the left when he was brought down in the penalty area, giving the Romans a penalty kick. Sam Gibson went to the spot and sent a low shot to the left corner of the net.
“Credit Reeise for making that goal possible,” said Latin coach Andrew Sachez. “It’s very difficult for any defender to handle him.”
Prefacing the goal were four opportunities for Latin during the preceding 10 minutes.
In the second half North Shore Country Day started to assert itself with sophomore Leif Steele acting as a catalyst with his forays from the left side.
The breakthrough came when Steele sent a shot into the box that the Romans were unable to clear.
“We were putting pressure on their keeper (Josh Goldhaber), and I’m not sure what happened,” said Walter Luglio, who was credited with the goal in the 47th minute. “It was deflected in the box, and it bounced into the back of the net.”
Gallun was given an assist on Luglio’s goal. In the 70th minute, Gallun scored the go-ahead goal that was spawned by a long throw-in.
“I’ve been working with Buckley Oelerich on these long throw-ins all year where we both go for the ball, and it hasn’t been working,” Gallun said.
“This time Buckley went for the ball, and the defender kicked it out. The ball came to me, and I put it in the bottom corner.”
Four minutes later Luglio made the score 3-1, delivering what proved to be the game-winning goal.
“The ball was crossed across the goal,” he said. “I was anticipating whether I would volley it or header it. I put my head on it, and then I saw it in the back of the net.”
Except for the penalty shot, Nick Potter was unyielding in goal for the Raiders until Charles Leonard scored on a header in the 78th minute.
Prior to that he made an assortment of outstanding saves, sometimes going high in the air to thwart attackers and lending credence to his coach’s claim that “Nick is the best goalkeeper in our league.”
The triumph followed the first loss of the conference season for the Raiders earlier in the week -- a 2-1 defeat inflicted by Lake Forest Academy that ended their 10-game undefeated streak and seven-game winning streak.
North Shore Country Day now boasts an 8-1-1 record and 25 points in Independent School League play and a 13-2-1 overall composite mark.
The 1-0 nonconference defeat came in a match against Notre Dame, which currently ranks 17th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 and beat no. 11 Benet on Saturday.
The tie was a 2-2 deadlock at Latin on Sept. 9.
Friday’s loss left Latin with a 4-3-3 resume and 15 points in league play.
“In the first half we possessed the ball really well, but then in the second half we turned into a different team and played their style,” Sanchez critiqued.
Gibson played a strong game for Latin.
“It was very tough to lose,” said the senior attacker. “They’re a big rival and a good, well-coached team. But we welcome the opportunity to play them again in the playoffs.”
Gibson will get his wish if both teams win their regionals. That rematch would be contested in the sectional semifinals at 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Dugdale Park in Waukegan.
To get there regional host North Shore Country Day, seeded no. 1 in subsectional B of the Cristo Rey St. Martin Sectional, will need to start with a win over ninth-seed Ida Crown at 4 p.m. Oct. 12 when its hosts at Skokie Playfields.
Latin, seeded second in subsectional A faces a play-in winner at 4 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Parker Regional.
