Arroyo helps Lane blast off vs. Lake View
Goal, 2 assists power Indians to 6-0 win, piece on N. Division title

CHICAGO — David Arroyo plays with an elan and assurance. He has a next-level jet burst he is capable of calling upon.
The senior forward at Lane is also just smooth. The ball finds him, and he knows what to do with it.
“Everybody knows how good David is,” Lane senior midfielder Michael Junay said. “I gave David the ball, and I sprinted right to the box. I knew that if I gave him the option he’d look for me.
“Obviously he did, and I was able to finish it.”
It took less than a minute for Arroyo to ruin any hope of a Lake View upset and put a celebratory charge into the pageantry and excitement of Senior Night.
Arroyo scored a goal and created two textbook assists in leading Lane to the 6-0 victory over Lake View in the final Premier Division North game in a jubilant atmosphere punctuated by fireworks Monday night on the North Side.
The Wildcats have a great history with the Indians. In 2013 Lake View stunned Lane for the city title. Led by a dynamic and explosive forward in Godfred Appau, Lake View is a highly capable team.
Until Arroyo changed the complexion of the game, Lake View was right there. Appau had a dangerous free kick just outside the box.
Lake View showed promise for more than 20 minutes of play.
“The first 22 minutes were really, really awesome,” Lake View coach Jeric Johnson said. “We had high levels of energy. We had some shots on goal, a nice free kick.
“It was just a great match for those first 22 minutes. Once they scored, in the 22nd minute, they had another score a few minutes after, and that definitely changed the tone.”
Arroyo showcased his jet burst right from the jump, nearly creating a goal in the seventh minute that Wildcats’ keeper Carlos Aragon made a great stab of. Moments later, Arroyo made another furious charge.
After an engaging back and forth, Arroyo took command in the 22nd minute. Catching a through-ball on the left flank, he pushed the ball down and surveyed the landscape.
“We do this in practice where we look for the man out wide and the player that played the ball through has to run at full speed to the second post,” Arroyo said.
“I knew Michael [Junay] was going to run to the second post. I didn’t try to cut in and score. I looked and saw Michael running in, and he finished perfectly.”
Junay recorded his first goal of the year. Lane (6-2-1, 5-1-0 Premier North) was just getting started.
Arroyo turned the game into a marvelous platform his abilities. Less than a minute later, Junay punched a ball down the left flank and Arroyo was again off to the races.
He beat two Lake View defenders and drove the ball hard down the left flank.
From a seemingly impossible angle, Arroyo blasted a left-footed sidewinder he directed with sublime accuracy as it cut inside the far post for an incredible goal.
“I shot it outside with my foot,” he said. “I thought it was going over the bar, It hit the post, and I was so excited. It was a great pass from Michael.”
Junay could only marvel at the athleticism and speed of Arroyo to even make a play on the ball.
“On the second goal, David made a great run and called for it, and I just tried to give him the ball as best as I could and he made a great finish,” Junay said.
“It was super exciting, family, friends out here to support us. It was exciting to finish it.”
Lake View (5-7-4, 0-4-2) suddenly was virtually defenseless against Arroyo’s dazzling combination. He was the maestro, conjuring whatever he wanted at his command.
“Two things I want to say,” Johnson said. “Lane is a big, strong team. They are deep. Our roster is about half the size of what their roster is. We are facing a number of injuries right now.
“We are playing our seventh game in 10 days, because we are active in the PepsiCo Showdown right now and our conference games. All of these matches were right behind each other. My team is beat up. They are tired, they are fatigued and a number of them were not here tonight because of injuries.”
Lake View reached the final of its bracket at the PepsiCo Showdown and plays against Oak Forest Sunday at Lyons.
Though Appau is a creative and explosive talent. He was unable to get untracked against the Indians.
Lane monopolized possession. Arroyo maintained his mastery by creating a corner kick from the left wing. He serviced a beautiful ball that senior forward Kamil Hochman blasted home in the 32nd minute with a header.
Hochman added a goal (also a header) and an assist in the second half. The goas were his first of the year.
“I think everybody was excited about tonight,” he said. “The band came out, the cheerleaders came out, the parents came out, and we had fireworks.
“It was our biggest game of the season. It was just an occasion to remember. I think this was the best senior night I have ever been a part of in my three years, and not just because it was mine.”
For his accomplishments David Arroyo earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match distinction.
Players like Hochman played off his energy and work rate. Lake View was simply overwhelmed. He also initiated the late scoring flurry by directing a header by midfielder Dean Muench.
“This was a team effort,” Hochman said. “I just think the ball was there, and I have to do this. IWe are really motivated by the way we played tonight, especially with the city tournament starting this week.
“We really think we can take this all the way.”
Amir Farooq and Nicholas Wagner completed the scoring cycle.
Lake View was down though far from out. The Wildcats displayed tremendous resilience and toughness in playing until the close. The Wildcats hit the bar on a shot, and repeatedly looked to create opportunities in the final third.
“That is just part of the game,” Johnson said. “Every team has that. When you have a smaller roster against a deeper roster, a school of 1,200 hundred versus a team of 4,500, those things really kick in.
“Until the last surge, we were trying to score there. That is what we are extremely proud of. The kids were disappointed, but they found a way to keep fighting up until the last second.”
Lane shared the regular season division title with Taft each tem finished with 15 points. Lane had the better goal differential. Taft beat the Indians 2-1. The Eagles advance into the city tournament as the No. 2 seed, the Indians No. 3.
Defending city champion Solorio is the top-seeded program.
“The Senior Night was for our kids, and it was a great night,” Lane coach Andrew Ricks said. “We are getting results, but it doesn't always feel cohesive.
“I think we are getting better. We are still making mistakes. If those are cleaned up, I’d feel better, like passing and heading and things like that. The South Side (tem) is the better side. I think that is going to be the true test when we play them in the city tournament.
“We are going to find out what we are made of.”
