Saints take 5-2 decision over visiting Cadets
By Jared Birchfield
ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East used its speed to confound Marmion’s defense and record a 5-2 nonconference win Thursday night at Norris Stadium.
Senior forward Mason Brockmeyer led the attack with a brace, giving him four goals in the Fighting Saints first two games. Teammates Giuseppe Avendano, Max Dodrill and Ryan Vanderveer also found the back of the net.
While St. Charles East, which is ranked 14th in the Chicagoland Soccer First 50 Poll, is pleased with its start, the defending DuKane Conference champions see things to work on.
“I'm happy with the results. Winning at this level isn't something we take for granted, but we have a lot of room for growth,” Saints coach Vince DiNuzzo said. “I think we probably created 15 to 20 clear scoring opportunities, and we only scored five goals. We have to be more effective in front of the net.”
Giving up two goals in the opening minutes of the second half was a key to the match, according to Marmion coach Gerardo Alvarez.
However, Alvarez was pleased that his Cadets, ranked 37th in the poll, continued to play hard.
“We came out in the second half and gave up two goals, and it must have been in three minutes," he said, "Going down 5-1 against a team like that, it's tough to get out of that hole. Lack of focus led to the breakdown in the first few minutes of the second half.
“Having said that, even though we were down 5-1, I thought we played with a lot of pride and intensity. I thought we were at their level.”
Brockmeyer put the Saints (2-0-0) up 1-0 at the 34:38 mark of the first half. He corralled a cross from Colin Leatherbury and scored from 20 yards on the right side.
Avendano, a junior reserve, scored his first varsity goal in the 29th minute, taking a shot from the right corner of the goal box.
“I came off the bench, and I had a good mindset. I wanted to score really bad,” he said. “I was making runs forward. When I saw an opportunity, I took off. I shouted for Aiden (Maloney) who had the ball, and he flew it over to me. I took a touch and then shot it in. It was like the most exciting thing, I can't even explain it.”
Brockmeyer earned his brace four minutes later and extended St. Charles East lead to 3-0.
Again, setting up 20 yards out on the right side, the senior took a shot.
Marmion goalkeeper Adam Ozsvath got his hand on the ball but was unable to stop it from going into the left corner of the net.
“When I'm faster than anybody else, it is easy to create opportunities,” Brockmeyer said of notching four goals in two games.
The forward agreed with DiNuzzo that the team needs to work on finishing its attacks.
“It's weird, I but I feel like with this game in particular, I really struggled to finish. I did have two goals, but it just has to get better,” Brockmeyer said. “I think my finishing is good enough. I think it's just taking that one moment before the net and setting up my shot and having composure as I get there.”
DiNuzzo said using speed to move the ball was to counter Marmion’s defense
“With the kids we have up-top and the way their defensivee line played, once we got the ball into the center, being able to play it through or over the top was the way to break that line,” said the Saints’ coach. “We got behind them a bunch, but we were not as if as effective as we wanted to be.”
Barry O’Neill scored Marmion’s first goal of the season with three minutes left in the first half. The senior dribbled through a pack of Saints defenders for a shot right in front of the goal.
“It took us about 35 minutes to get into their half, but we finally did. The last five minutes of the first half we pressed them. It worked out, and we got down the field," said the senior. “I saw the goalie move to the right, and I put a bomb in the left corner.
“I got closed down by three defenders so I knew either would go in or be a deflection. It felt good. We were down, so it was much-needed. I thought we could get back into the game.”
Alvarez felt his team gained confidence.
“I think we grew into the game. We came out with the intensity and confidence. We went down early.” the Cadets coach said. “We scored a goal and made it 3 to 1, and we got back into the game I thought the first half was pretty even then.”
St. Charles East didn't waste any time in the second half. An Elia Desario free kick from 40 yards out ended with the Saint’s fourth goal 90 seconds into the second half. Brockmeyer took the kick and passed it to Vanderveer, who was standing just outside the goal mouth. The senior headed it over the goal line.
Vanderveer’s overall play earned him the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honor.
“I thought Ryan Vanderveer was all over the place. He played 80 minutes, and he was box to box, defending, organizing, communicating, facilitating,” DiNuzzo said. “Even though Brockmeyer scored a couple and had an assist, that doesn't happen without Ryan's work.”
Dodrill completed the Saints’ scoring at the 37:57 mark of the second half, with an uncontested shot in front of the Cadets' goal.
Alvarez thought that the teams played even for the rest of the second half.
“I thought they controlled the territory on the field, and they were in possession of the ball on our side of the field especially in the first half,” the Marmion coach said. “But I thought that in the second half we figured it out, and we pressed them, especially their center backs.”
He also felt players were making necessary adjustments for Marmion (0-2-0).
“A lot of guys are playing new positions. I told the guys they're growing into those positions, and they were doing better in the second half,” Alvarez said. “There is an individual evolution that I'm happy with so there are some good takeaways tonight."
Marmion forward Harley Karner scored the team’s second goal in the 56th minute.
Cadet starting goalie Danny Jankowski (four saves) had a rough night. The senior left the match halfway through the first half after colliding with a Saints player. He returned to start the second half but played only four minutes when another collision put him back on the bench. Ozsvath filled in both times. Alvarez said Jankowski should be able to play in the Cadets’ next match.
DiNuzzo is still experimenting with his first 11 and substitutions.
“Our starting lineup is always in flux. Our rotation is not what it's going to be toward the end of this season,” he said. “We're still growing and players are still learning to play where they will be comfortable and be the most successful for the team.”
The coach would also like the Saints to work on their poise on the pitch. St. Charles East earned two yellow cards.
“We also had to maintain our composure throughout the game, and we need to be more disciplined,” DiNuzzo said.
