Kalata, Grayslake C. cruise past N. Chicago
Senior forward’s hat-trick helps Rams earn 2nd NLCC victory

GRAYSLAKE – Homecoming is special for many reasons. Alumni return to their alma mater, special activities and themes highlight the entire week, the activities seem endless.
Grayslake Central played a special role in this year’s Homecoming festivities. Their Northern Lake County Conference game Friday afternoon against North Chicago took place immediately before the Rams’ Homecoming football game against Grant.
With a large crowd, the Rams took full advantage of the opportunity, cruising to a 9-0 victory over the visiting Warhawks.
“It’s so thrilling,” said Grayslake Central forward Tyler Kalata. “With all of the fans here, we don’t get that many fans for soccer, normally. Seeing all of these people, it is just so exciting and a great experience.”
The thrill-seekers in the crowd were dazzled by Kalata himself, as the senior tallied a hat-trick on his way to earning Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honors.
Kalata’s first two goals came in the last two minutes of the first half. After defender Thomas Conlon’s drive from 25 yards hit the crossbar in the 39th minute, Kalata streaked in and headed the ball over the line past North Chicago keeper Luis Daniel.
“When I saw the ball hit the crossbar,” Kalata added. “I knew I needed to follow up and finish it.”
Just over a minute later, thirteen seconds before halftime, Kalata was the beneficiary of a great steal and pass from senior midfielder Owen Aaberg. His last goal capped off the scoring in the 74th minute, tapping in a great cross from fellow senior Jayson Weidman.
“Tyler has been, quietly, one of our most productive players,” said Rams coach Tom Hamilton. “He is constantly moving intelligently off the ball, creating space for others. He’s really good about settling us down; he is a very technically gifted player. For someone who didn’t play a lot for us last year, he has really stepped into a prominent role.”
Weidman’s story is equally as impressive. When he first entered the game, he got louder cheers than anyone in the stadium. He explained why.
“This is actually my first varsity game,” Weidman said as he recently was brought up from the JV team. “A lot of my JV teammates have been rooting me on the entire time. Off of a rebound, I saw it was 2-v.-1, and I felt more confident in Tyler’s ability to score than in my own shot and felt he was the best option for the team.”
The effort from Weidman was fresh on the mind of coach Hamilton.
“Jayson’s assist on his varsity debut,” he added. “It looks like he’s been up here the whole time.”
Defensive midfielder James Rohlfing scored first for Grayslake Central (4-7-0, 2-1-0) in the 12th minute. After fellow junior Damian Makowski was pushed down inside the penalty area, a penalty kick was awarded. Rohlfing buried it in the bottom left corner.
Makowski then displayed his own individual talents in the 19th minute to give the Rams a two-goal lead. After not properly handling a cross, Makowski chased the ball down on the right side and preceded to dribble, weaving between two Warhawks and releasing a drive off his left foot that squeezed through Daniel’s hands and inside the near post.
“Coach Hamilton always tells us to get the ball when we lose it,” Makowski added. “I did that on this play. I also listened to coach when he said to cut in when the defenders bite on me. I cut in and took a shot and luckily it went in.”
Christian Hinestrosa, Ben Berry, as well as Marko and Daniel Marynevych, all tallied second half goals for the Rams.
North Chicago (1-6-0, 0-3-0) was only able to get one shot on Grayslake Central keeper Jonathan Piggott – it came in the 23rd minute.
However, the exploits of their keeper, Daniel, are to be noted. The netminder came up with 12 saves, several of which were acrobatic punches over the crossbar. Most noteworthy was his stop on Daniel Marynevych in the 51st minute. The Rams forward came in from point-blank range and Daniel grabbed the ball while flipping over onto his back and holding on.
“He’s been fantastic for us all season,” said North Chicago coach David Lang. “He’s not the tallest goalkeeper, but he gets in the right position to put the ball over the crossbar when he needs to. He’s been doing really, really well and progressing throughout the year.”
There is more upcoming NLCC action for these two teams. North Chicago is scheduled to face Grant in Fox Lake on Tuesday evening at 6:15p.m.. Grayslake Central will travel to Wauconda on Tuesday evening for a 6:15 p.m. kickoff.
Grayslake Central had additional performances to recognize.
“I’m proud of the overall effort,” Hamilton said. “Owen Aaberg is our engine in the middle. He works tirelessly to fill out counterattacks and be a pivot point for our attacks. Zach Takiff, out of the outside back, was pulled from JV earlier in the season and has given us 100 percent.”
