New Trier posts windy win vs. Deerfield
Trevians wear down depleted, weary Warriors 3-0

DEERFIELD—Undaunted by gusty 46-mile-per-hour winds, undefeated and untied New Trier extended its winning streak to five games with a 3-0 triumph Thursday night in a Central Suburban League cross-over match at Adams Field.
Deerfield played without four players because of injuries and spring vacations but stayed in the match despite falling behind by two goals in the opening 10 minutes.
“We were both undermanned and underdogs,” said coach Elliott Hurtig of the Warriors (2-2-2). “Our guys played with a lot of effort and energy. They fought and never gave up.”
According to Will Franzen, who led the Trevians with two goals and an assist, “It was definitely challenging. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We emphasized bringing a high intensity. We had a really good start.”
While Deerfield goalkeeper Josh Berman faced unrelenting pressure, New Trier’s Aidan Crawford was challenged only occasionally in recording his second-straight shutout after coming off the injured list in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Niles North.
In addition to getting Crawford back, the Trevians were bolstered by the Tuesday return of two basketball-playing brothers, junior forward Peter Kanellos and sophomore forward Evan Kanellos.
“Until then it was all basketball,” said Peter, New Trier’s starting point guard. “We were really good — 13-2 overall and we won our conference. It was a fun season.”
It also was an unusual season because the basketball season preceded the boys’ soccer season rather than following it as was the case prior to the COVID-19 pandemic
The Trevians are a deep and experienced team with 16 seniors on their 23-man roster. In Thursday’s match Coach Matt Ravenscraft substituted early and often.
“Every single kid has contributed to our success,” Ravenscraft said. “We’re counting on our seniors to set the tone, and so far they’ve done an excellent job. We’re a soccer program through all levels; these guys represent the pinnacle of that.”
Going against the wind, New Trier opened the scoring in the sixth minute, capitalizing on Franzen’s high, hard penalty kick that was a consequence of a goal-mouth takedown.
Three minutes later, Franzen attacked from the near left, outmaneuvering two defenders before tucking a shot inside the near post for his team-high fifth goal of the season.
An outstanding defensive play by Deerfield’s Justin Blumenthal prevented the Trevians from going up by three goals in the 30th minute. Berman thwarted a shot by Dante Mitchell after a feed from Franzen but the goalie failed to control the ball. It hovered at the goal mouth when Blumenthal came to the rescue and cleared it out of danger.
Late in the half Adam Shore had the Warriors’ first good scoring chance but Crawford made the catch.
Then less than a minute prior to intermission, New Trier’s Rowan Simon was set up by Mitchell but Deerfield co-captain Nicholas Prus stymied the opportunity by clearing the ball.
In the second half, the Trevians continued to make connecting passes and control possession. However, they were unable to get their third goal until Collin Donnelly-Maine headed in Franzen’s corner kick in the 72nd minute.
Shortly before Donnelly-Maine found the net, Crawford preserved his shutout by making a stellar save on Blumenthal, who infiltrated the Trevians defense and set himself up thanks to a nifty move.
Blumenthal is sophomore making his varsity debut this season and his performance against the Trevians on both ends of the field was impressive.
“It’s good to play against older kids because they teach you how to toughen up,” he said.
New Trier made an impression on Blumenthal: “They’re a very good team, the best we’ve faced this year.”
Hurtig also praised the winners. “That’s a great team we played,” said the Deerfield coach. “They move the ball very fast, and they’re very creative.
“I’m proud of our guys’ effort against them.”
Deerfield entered the game ranked no. 22 in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 after going unranked in the First 50 preseason state-wide poll. The Warriors impressed in their first week with a 2-0-2 record that included an upset of Evanston.
But the grueling early season slate and the wear and tear of the game took its toll. The contest against New Trier was the Warriors sixth in 10 days. The team needed a break badly enough that they scratched a visit from Lakes on Saturday.
New Trier ranks seventh in the Top 25 after it was placed 11th in the First 50. It appears the Trevians have yet to hit their zenith.
