New Trier rallies twice
to down Belleville West
Dodge plays a role in every goal in 3-2 win

BELLEVILLE -- New Trier is still trying to find its way in the young season.
Unexpectedly, the Trevians two-game southern swing started poorly with a shocking 1-0 loss to Columbia on Friday night. The record for the Eagles, then 3-2-1, was a bit misleading on the surface. The Class A team’s only losses this season came against defending state champions: 4-1 to Class 3A titleist O’Fallon in the season opener; and Class A winner Althoff 2-0.
"We played well last night, it was a good game," said New Trier coach Jim Burnside. "They (Columbia) played well. They stuck one in at the beginning of the second half, and we didn't respond really well. That happens. We've got a lot of new kids, and they've got to find their stride."
Dodge said the loss to Columbia was somewhat of a wakeup call, but it is early in the season and there is no reason for panic.
"I think we all came together as a team, and we talked last night and this morning and know we have to be better," said Dodge. "We're obviously not playing as well as we could be. I think it was really important for us to come back and get a win."
For a moment or two Saturday, the fifth-ranked club in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25 looked like it might go 0-for-2 on the Illinois-side of the St. Louis suburbs.
But New Trier put things together after falling behind twice and took down Belleville West 3-2.
New Trier started the game well and controlled the play for most of the first half.
Trevians midfielder Lida Dodge hit forward Elizabeth Marquardt with a perfect pass just outside of the left side of the box. With Maroons goalie Emma Hubble down and out of the play on the other side of the goal, an unlucky Marquardt fired a shot over the wide-open goal.
The Trevians also had the majority of the scoring chances in the half.
However, a mistake in the New Trier backfield led to Belleville West midfielder Averi Clifton getting taken down. Clifton converted the PK to the lower right corner past Trevians keeper Santina Hahner for a 1-0 lead with 1 minute, 5 seconds remaining in the half.
The two terrible soccer omens didn’t deter the Trevians (3-1-1).
"I thought we came back and played pretty well," said Burnside. "We've got a long way to go. They were organized, and they pressured us. We got better today."
The Trevians could do little wrong offensively in the first half but had nothing to show on the scoreboard for their efforts. The combination of forward Kendall Sierens and Dodge clicked. Sierens was dominant with the ball on the outside and just missed hitting Dodge with a crafty cross in the opening minutes.
Dodge created frustration for Belleville West on her own. She just missed wide to the right from the top of the box and had another good opportunity in a scramble in front the Belleville West goal that Hubble charged and took off her foot.
"She (Dodge) is a quality player," said Belleville West coach Jason Mathenia. "She can definitely play, and she can smack a dead ball like nobody's business. She did well today."
The Maroons offense started to get going midway through the half. University of Illinois recruit Sarah Foley sent a perfect cross to midfielder Carolyne Mathenia, who forced Hahner to make her best save of the half at close range.
Belleville West (2-4-1) had a chance to crack the New Trier backline when Hahner picked up the ball outside the box, but the Maroons wasted the free kick opportunity.
Soon, Dodge was back at the attack against the Maroons with two terrific scoring chances. She first missed over an open net and later just missed the upper right corner.
Belleville West and Foley countered with some nice footwork down the sideline, but Hahner came out again to stuff the chance.
The Maroons put pressure on the Trevians late in the half.
Mathenia tested Hahner from the left side. The junior keeper was forced to make a tricky save at the near post. Then Clifton produced dangerous work off the ball that created the foul in the box and the 1-0 lead.
New Trier almost tied the game before the horn when Sierens deflected a cross from Dodge that Hubble managed to punch wide.
The New Trier attack came to life in the second half. Dodge and Marquardt pestered the Maroons defense early. The two just missed connections from the left side before Dodge tied the game 1-1 from the top of the box inside the far right post past Hubble in the 43rd minute.
Dodge and Sierens almost put New Trier ahead minutes later. Dodge just missed from the left side, and Sierens was off by inches from the right side.
"We're kind of realizing we need to capitalize on our chances," said Marquardt. "We need to put away our shots, and we can't be casual about anything. This isn't a place to be casual. We need to put away our chances and be really strong."
Belleville bounced right back to take the lead when Foley surprised Hahner with a soft shot from 10 yards outside the box that sailed over the keeper's head just more than five minutes later.
"I thought we had our moments where we did capitalize and where we should have," said Foley. "I think in the back we could have been more composed as a team … and talk more"
New Trier really picked up the play after its second and final deficit of the day. Marquardt just missed hitting Dodge inside the box. Then the omnipresent Dodge was active once again, fielding a goal kick from Hubble and firing from outside the box. Hubble had to scramble to make the save.
Dodge was at it again minutes later with a bomb from just outside the box and a pass to Marquardt that almost resulted in a goal.
Sophomore midfielder Annie Paden solved Hubble and tied the game at 2-2 when she scored to the upper left corner from just outside the box. Hubble kept the game tied with two strong saves on Dodge, one coming off a strong shot from the left side.
"I think we took our opportunities more and went forward," said Dodge. "We couldn't keep the ball much in the first half."
New Trier registered the game-winner when midfielder Charlotte Dellin scored with 6:28 left after a scramble in front of the net that started with a nice corner kick from Marquardt.
"We have some inexperience on this team," said Burnside. "They're athletic; and they're good soccer players, but we're still finding our stride to play as a team. We talked at halftime about being a little bit sharper. We still have a lot of work to do."
Marquardt said her team's ball possession improved in the second half and helped turn the game around.
"I felt today we possessed the ball better, and we're still kind of getting used to each other," said Marquardt. "It can be hard at the beginning of the season to get used to each other.
“We're definitely learning about each other better. I think we're building a sense of trust with each other, and it will allow us to move forward as the season progresses."
