New Trier finds late magic
to beat Hinsdale Central
Gottshall’s 80th-minute goal delivers 2-1 win in ranked battle
By Patrick Z. McGavin
HINSDALE — Time was of the essence.
New Trier made it seem like it momentarily stood still.
Trevians’ defender Colin Gottshall was perfectly situated inside the Hinsdale Central box.
“Basically the first ball got played over the top, and I just challenged it,” Gottshall said.
“It dropped down, and took a bounce, and I just kind of half volleyed it with my right foot, and it went through the defenders.”
His stunning 80th-minute goal completed the sixth-ranked Trevians’ thrilling 2-1 victory over the no. 14 Red Devils before a sizeable crowd Saturday afternoon.
The win was not a solo act.
New Trier (6-1-2) had many different connective threads entwined for the game-winner.
Forward Mattthew Perchik raced down the right edge, and got the deflection off a defender to create the corner kick.
Corner specialist Evan Kanellos made the ideal service.
“It’s all about knowing where you are in the game,” Perchik said. “Down the stretch, your legs aren’t where they were at the beginning of the game.
“I knew I probably wasn’t going to be able to get around my guy, so I took what I could get.”
The Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match, Kanellos was the other integral part of the equation.
“We work a lot on set piece stuff in practice,” Kanellos said. “In that moment, everybody’s really frantic, but I heard the guys in the box say slow down and take my time.
“I put the ball in the box, and Colin has been amazing on set pieces.”
Hinsdale Central (5-1-1) saw its five-game winning streak snapped.
Since their eye-opening 2-0 victory over national power Marquette (Wis.) on August 27, the Red Devils have been on a tear.
Hinsdale Central had a 17-1 scoring differential with four shutouts during the five-game run.
The Red Devils have also unveiled a star in junior forward Luca Davies.
With seven goals and two assists, he has assisted or scored a goal in each of the seven Red Devils’ games.
Fast, agile, and very creative either on or off the ball, he is dynamic and elusive.
His background is equally unorthodox, and accounts for his electric playing style.
“Just my experiences,” Davies said. “I was born in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. My mom is from Brazil, my day is from England.
“We also lived in Germany, and I played there. I’ve had coaches from all over the place. It’s great to get the advice of all the coaches coming in from other places.”
Davies said his family has been living in Hinsdale the last four years.
After a strong start by New Trier, Davis shook up their foundation with a spectacular goal.
Midfielder Martin Montoya worked down the left edge, and delivered a cross.
Davies made an athletic move and smashed home the header near post from about four yards in the fifth minute.
“That was a great run by Martin and a great ball, and I just saw the header opportunity,” Davies said.
“It was a very nice goal.”
As he has become more assimilated to the American game, his appreciation has also deepened.
“From the outside, I didn’t think it was very good,” he said. “Clearly, it’s more competitive than I expected it to be.
“I love playing at a high level, and I try to get as much game and training at a high level in order to learn.’
Davies also came under the sharp gaze of New Trier for the balance of the game.
“He was a very good player,” Gottshall said. “We always wanted to be aware of where he was, his movement on and off the ball and making sure somebody was always on him.”
The Davies goal also sharpened the Trevians’ response.
“I thought we came out with good energy. That goal was their first chance, and the first time they had the ball in our area,” Kanellos said.
“That really upset me. From then on, we played with a chip on our shoulder.”
Kanellos helped engineer the comeback.
After absorbing Hinsdale Central’s pressure, New Trier slowly began to gain greater possession.
In the 19th minute, Kanellos orchestrated a beautiful give-and-go with Perchik.
His return ball found Perchik on the right wing. From about 12 yards, he blasted home the equalizer.
“Right away we identified their high line, and we knew what we wanted to do,” Perchik said.
“We wanted to play big balls from behind, and run onto them and get crosses from them. It ended up playing off when I scored, and we kept going with that.”
The ensuing 60 minutes of game action was a thrilling back-and-forth affair that showcased the abilities of both sides.
Montoya is dangerous and fluid with the ball. Davies continued to attack. He fired another sharp ball from the right wing in the 46th minute that smashed off the crossbar.
Hinsdale Central defender Kevin Gottschalk also impressed with his exceptional free kicks. He brought a distinct and dangerous offensive threat to the Red Devils’ attack.
“We had an idea of what they had and their style,” Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins said.
“We have a great roster that brings the younger players together with the older players, learning what it takes to compete on a national stage.”
Hinsdale Central appeared to take the lead in the 69th minute.
The goal was negated by an offsides call, that was confirmed in a consultation between the referee and the assist.
Dayton DiTomasso is another superb two-way threat who has been a dominant player for the Red Devils.
His versatility and creativity as a shot-distributor and shut-down defender helps define the ruthless efficiency of the Red Devils.
“Credit to New Trier for a great game,” Wiggins said. “We are better today than we were at the start of the game because of the quality of the opponent and the situations we were put in.”
New Trier coach Matt Ravenscraft was impressed at how his players responded to the early adversity.
“This team improves every game,” he said. “That is definitely the takeaway, and we are up for the challenge.
“They punished us early, and that was for the wake-up call. I was very pleased with my boys’ response. I thought we battled, and it was a great reward at the end of the game.”
