New Trier dials long distance
in win over Lane
Trevians tally 3-long goals in 7 minutes to secure win

CHICAGO -- New Trier's been looking for an offensive spark.
Coming into the Trevians' final pool play game of the Lou Malnati's Deep Dish Classic against Lane, the team carried nearly a 1:1 ratio of goals-scored to goals-allowed (13-12).
It seems like the visitors may have found their fire-starter: shots from distance.
"Their outsides were dropping back, and it really gave us a lot of opportunities there in the middle to get some of those shots off," New Trier's Jim Burnside said. "We're trying to find spaces that will lead to better shots and sometimes that's what's given to us."
New Trier scored three goals from 20-30 yards en route to a 3-2 win over Lane in a rain-soaked evening at Lane Stadium. The Trevians finished pool play with 2-1-0 record; Lane ended 0-2-1.
"I love playing in the rain," New Trier's Lida Dodge said. "It's so much fun, even though the balls did stop rolling because they'd get stuck in puddles."
Lane's Maya Martinez-Bates got the scoring going. In the 13th minute, the senior midfielder lined up for a penalty shot against New Trier freshman keeper Caroline Hague.
The veteran put it past a diving Hague, and Lane (6-4-1) took the opening edge.
The lead, however, didn't last long.
Not two minutes later, New Trier's Annie Paden took a pass from junior defender Sofia Palmer and knocked it past Lane keeper Siena Belko from 30 yards to tie the game.
Lane tried to answer with a shot from Scout Murray that Hague saved. That led to a counterattack by the Trevians, which turned into a corner kick for Paden.
Paden's service into the box was headed out by a Lane defender, but right to Dodge, who volleyed it into the net from a little over 20 yards to give the Trevians the lead back at 2-1.
The junior midfielder wasn't done though. Less than three minutes later, Dodge had a 1-v-1 opportunity. She created space and blasted a 25-yard shot into the net to give their final goal and a 3-1 advantage.
The game flipped in seven minutes for the Trevians, who are ranked 17th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25.
"They dropped really far back, so they were giving us space to take those far shots," Dodge said. "They were giving us space to hit it, and we took advantage of it.
"The three goals gave us a lot of confidence going into the second half."
The Trevians (5-3-2) continued to put pressure on the Lane defense and forced Belko to make a couple more saves, including one on a Josie Noble 1-v-1 opportunity late in the half.
New Trier started quickly after the intermission, but Lane got back into the game and put pressure on the visitors' backline.
"I think we just came out and started to play our game," Lane manager Michelle Vale said. "We used the entire 80 minutes to build an attack that I felt was keeping New Trier on their toes.
"The difference between the two halves is really that we reflected on how we could utilize our various talents and strengths to continue to build. We also reflected that the rain was fun, and this was actually a fun game.
"The first half I think we were worried about all the puddles, but the girls put that out of their heads after halftime."
The home team's persistence paid off when Martinez-Bates took a free kick with just over 18 minutes remaining. The shot was saved, but came out to junior defender Eleanor Nagle, who put it past Hague and cut the deficit to 3-2.
"They really came out with a lot of energy and determination in the second half," Dodge said about how Lane contained the Trevians attack. "We also started taking shots that weren't really on target, and that affected it too."
From there, Lane continued to pressure and came close to creating some quality opportunities late in the match but couldn't come up with the equalizer.
"It was really nice to see them continue to attack," Vale said. "We came close on a couple there at the end."
New Trier needed a game like this where they could string together multiple goals. That had only happened three time this season (in wins against Prospect, Palatine and Belleville West).
The Trevians coach enjoyed the visitors total on the scoreboard.
"We're working really hard, and you can see that," he said. "But I think sometimes we're looking for the perfect shot, for the perfect ball, and that's not going to happen often."
He also feels that he's learned a lot about his team over the past week and from tournament play.
"They've shown they've got a lot of heart and play really hard," Burnside said. "There's a long way to go this season, and we're going to keep learning. There are a lot of games left to play."
Lane fought well this week with less than a full complement of players due to spring break. Vale also likes what she's seen from her team, especially after dealing with losses to Young and Stevenson last week.
"Our girls have a lot of determination and a lot of anger inside of them that is channeled well," Vale said. "They're respectful and classy, work hard and have a lot of drive.
"Whatever we can't demonstrate in an equal form, whether it's speed, form or muscle, we're smart and try to capitalize on the things that do make us stand out.
"I saw a lot of determination to represent our school well. I saw that this team has things to work on, but they have much further to go. And they will."
