Parker leads New Trier to quarterfinals
Senior gets brace, yellow card for 'celebration';
Burnside gets controversial red card

AURORA – It appears Sydney Parker is going to have to find a new way to celebrate after she scores.
Ditto for her New Trier teammates.
Parker, a senior defender, scored twice and Lily Conley had one goal to lead the Trevians to a 3-0 Naperville Invitational victory over Palatine on Saturday at Metea Valley.
The win gave New Trier, ranked fourth in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, the championship of Group H, which also included Oak Park and River Forest. The Trevians (8-0-2) advance to the Thursday quarterfinal round for a 5 p.m. date Thursday at Naperville Central.
The other prime matchups include no. 16 Metea Valley hosting sixth-ranked Neuqua Valley at 7 p.m., no. 22 St. Charles East traveling to no. 9 Naperville North for a 7 p.m. match, and no. 18 Waubonsie Valley visiting reigning state champion and top-ranked Barrington at 5 p.m.
Characteristically, New Trier played well. The Trevians were in control throughout against Palatine (4-6-2), which mustered only three shots against a Trevians defense that has allowed only two goals this season.
Uncharacteristically, Parker received a yellow card after she scored her first goal of the game to give the Trevians a 2-0 lead with 34:27 remaining in the second half. That was followed by her coach receiving a straight red.
Parker blasted home a 25-yard shot, and then ran along the sidelines where she high-fived the players on the New Trier bench.
That brought her a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. New Trier head coach Jim Burnside argued the call and was ejected, leaving assistant coach Dan Rogan to manage the team the rest of the way.
“(The referee) could have just given a warning,” Rogan said. “There’s lots of rules in the rule book. He said at the beginning of the game, ‘We don’t care about the shirts (being) untucked,’ which is a rule.
“They didn’t measure shin guards. There’s all these rules now, so you’re going to pick and choose which rules you’re going to enforce? Then it becomes you’re managing the game.
“He said, ‘You’re trying to show up your opponent.’ We’re not trying to show anybody up. We’re good friends with (Palatine coach) Willie Filian, and that’s the last thing we want to do.”
Indeed, Filian said afterward he had no problem with Parker’s celebration. Parker was surprised and upset because the Trevians regularly celebrate goals in that fashion.
“I wasn’t sure why at first he was giving me the card,” Parker said. “Then he said (it was for) excessive celebration.
“I was just happy about scoring and getting a point for our team. We do it every time someone scores; we go over and give each other high-fives on the bench.
“We’ve never been called for it before, but I guess now we know.”
New Trier sophomore Emma Weaver, who had two assists, was asked if the Trevians would have to think of a new way to celebrate.
“Hopefully not,” Weaver said. “We’ve been doing it for years, so it’s a tradition that means a lot to us on the team.”
Parker was happy that the normally mild-mannered Burnside stuck up for her. The veteran coach was tossed just seconds after beginning his dissent.
“He’ll speak his mind when he feels passionate about something,” Parker said. “He knows that card that I got was unnecessary and unfair, so I think him empowering his voice was necessary at that moment.
“I don’t agree that he should have gotten a red card, but it’s the ref’s call.”
Aside from that controversy, New Trier’s victory was a case of straightforward dominance.
Conley opened the scoring midway through the first half when she knocked a corner kick from Weaver off a defender and into the net.
That was the only decent scoring chance for either team before intermission, but the Trevians got rolling after the break. Whitney Hoban left a ball for the onrushing Parker, who blew the shot by Palatine goalie Amaya Rivera.
“She has one of the strongest shots on the team,” Rogan said. “She can put a ball through the net.
“Whitney won the ball about five yards away, and she called for it. Whitney stepped away, and Sydney ran over and hammered it. It was like an exclamation point.”
That triggered the excitement which led to the fireworks.
“We were playing pretty well,” Parker said. “Lily had scored that first goal, and we had a lot of energy. So I think any time we score it’s a little bit of relief.
“When we score it’s always a good feeling, so I wanted to get some excitement out.”
Though Burnside didn’t get to see it, Parker added an even more brilliant goal just three minutes later, meeting Weaver’s corner kick from the right side and bouncing a power header home from the far post. It was Parker’s sixth goal of the year.
“She is unbelievable in the air,” Weaver said. “Everyone knows that.
“She’s very unpredictable, too. Her and Whitney are our two targets. So I know when I’m serving the ball in, I’m either looking for Syd or Whit.
“Syd is the first one I try to find, and I try to find her on the back post, and she does a really nice job of going (to) the ball and directing it into the goal perfectly. So I give her all of the credit for all those goals that she scores at the net.”
The Trevians haven’t been as prolific offensively as they have in recent years, tallying 24 goals so far. But 12 of those have come in their last three games, so things are starting to heat up.
“I’m really happy,” Parker said. “I think each game we work on something. We haven’t had a lot of practices just because of a lot of games and the weather has cancelled some, but every time we come out we have more energy and we work on something new.
“You can kind of see us piecing it all together. Today we were working on a new formation and possessing the ball and going side to side. I was really happy with that.”
