Wolves' three early goals lead to 8-2 win

PLAINFIELD - Oswego East coach Steve Szymanski was hoping for a fast start from his squad when they met Plainfield North on Thursday in a key Southwest Prairie Conference matchup. What he got from his players certainly proved to be more than he could have anticipated.
The Wolves stunned their hosts by scoring three goals in the opening 3:50 of play and built its advantage to 5-0 late in the first half to help it capture an 8-2 victory that improved the team record to 11-0-1 on the season and 5-0-0 in conference.
As has been the case throughout its successful season, Oswego East relied on a lot of different players to provide its scoring, with nine being involved. That has been the story behind a squad that features 17 seniors which has collected three or more goals in eight of its matches.
After starting their season with seven-straight wins, the Wolves played a scoreless draw against Wheaton North on September 13. Since
then they have won their last four matches by a 23-4 margin, Next up is a road match Saturday against rival Oswego.
Kellen Klosterman led the Wolves with two goals and an assist. Ben Burns, Josh Frank, Grant Glorioso and DuPablo Parodis-Yu all scored a goal and added an assist.
Other goal scorers for the winners were Matt Watson and Kyle Smiley. Carter Boberg and Drew Karg also handed out assists.
"I told them that I really wanted them to get out there and get off to a good start, and I don't know if you can get off to a better start than three goals in four minutes," Szymanski said. "We've been playing really well as a team, and it's been fun. We just have to keep it moving, and take it one game at a time.
"These guys are so selfless, and they just play for each other. There are some guys that score more than others, but we saw how excited they got when Kyle scored. It's awesome when guys are happy for other guys' success. Of all the teams that I've coached, this is probably the closest team that I've ever had, without a doubt. We've had some close teams and some good teams, but these guys are a true family, and that's cool."
The Wolves scored the first three goals in a span of 1:51. Their first goal came in the second minute when Boberg sent a corner kick inside to Glorioso, who connected.
In the third minute, Klosterman set up Parodis-Yu for a score and then in the fourth minute, Klosterman made it 3-0 following a pass from Frank.
Klosterman and Parodis-Yu teamed up again in the 17th minute, this time with the roles reversed, as Klosterman collected his second-straight goal.
The Tigers (8-4-2, 2-1-1), who hadn't lost by more than three goals this season, looked to get something started with attempts from Justin Williams, Cooper Allen and Ryan Bechtel, but they were all turned away by keeper Javier Ruiz, who also stopped a penalty during that sequence.
Oswego East went up 5-0 in the 39th minute when Glorioso was denied on a shot, but Matt Watson was there to put in the rebound.
Plainfield North finally scored in the 40th minute when the Wolves were called for a foul in the box, and Brady Harwood put in the penalty to make it 5-1 at halftime.
"We started off really strong," Glorioso said. "We came out fast, and we had a mindset that we were going to put them in early. We came out and pressured hard and finished our chances. We haven't beaten Plainfield North in a few years so we wanted to take that back.
"We have a really good team this year, and everyone works really well together and we have a lot of depth. That's really helped us a lot this year since we're able to make subs and keep the same intensity with everybody that goes in. I love spending time with the team since everybody is really close and works well together."
The Wolves were right back at it following the break as Burns sent a pass in front of the net, and Frank put in the shot in the 45th minute.
In the 53rd minute, the visitors connected again, this time after the Tigers were called for a hand ball in the box. Burns fired in the penalty.
The Tigers got their final score in the 58th minute from Aidan Smith.
After Parodis-Yu and Ythan Houston were turned away, Oswego East closed the scoring in the 77th minute when Smiley scored his first goal when he sent in a shot from about 10 yards that bounced off of a defender.
"We're like a family," Smiley said. "If one of us scores a goal, it's like we all score a goal. A lot of us have been on the same team since middle school and have played club together. I've known some of these guys since I've been in kindergarten.
"We've grown up together, so we bond together. I think that our chemistry is almost unmatched. I also love how we're so competitive.
“Our coach says that we have great depth and that we have 20 starters. I think because of that, when we go in, our team is never less than 100 percent."
Plainfield North, which started off the season with an 8-2 record but has gone 0-2-2 since, looks to bounce back from the disappointing setback when it hosts West Aurora in its next Southwest Prairie match Saturday.
