Hinsdale C.-Plainfield N. ping pong to tie
Hosts see 3 leads disappear, Grant scores hat-trick for visiting PN
By Matt Le Cren
HINSDALE -- Hinsdale Central senior Jane Cole wasn’t satisfied with the result, which is an indication of how far the Red Devils have come since last year.
Plainfield North junior Molly Grant was less than thrilled, too, which reflects her squad’s high expectations.
Cole tallied one of Hinsdale Central's three go-ahead goals and led a spirited effort in the midfield, while Grant scored each game-tying goals as visiting Plainfield North came back for a 3-3 tie Friday at Dickinson Field.
“We’re not satisfied with tying,” Cole said. “We always want to win but all we can do is look forward to the game tomorrow (at Naperville North).”
The Red Devils (0-0-1), who struggled for success with a youthful team last season, took the lead three times against a Plainfield North team that won 13 games last season. But the Tigers (1-0-1), who return only four starters, battled back in impressive fashion after mustering only three shots in the first half.
“I think we did pretty good passing and coming back from a (deficit),” Grant said. “We’re starting to come together as a team. It is only our second game.”
Both teams feature a lot of new players, including several refugees from club soccer. The Red Devils, who won only twice last year using primarily freshmen and sophomores, now have 10 seniors, many of whom returned to the team after playing club.
That group includes Cole and defender Madeline Swade, who both found the back of the net.
Swade gave the Red Devils a 3-2 lead when she bent a corner kick into the goal with 12:04 remaining in the second half.
“I’m a lefty, so that helped for sure,” Swade said. “I think we’re going to be pretty solid this year. Our hard work will pay off, so we’re looking forward to more wins.”
The Red Devils won most of the balls in the midfield in the first half and took a 2-1 lead at intermission. Cole started the scoring when she headed home a pass from Haley Arnold at the 34:41 mark.
The hosts didn’t allow the Tigers to get the ball to Grant, a Lipscomb commit who is a dangerous striker. She only touched the ball a handful of times before the break, but she converted her only shot of the half with 24:00 remaining.
Senior midfielder Victoria Thornton started the play by sending a cross from the right end line that was punched at by Hinsdale Central goalie Fiona Fitzsimons. The ball went straight to Grant, who rolled a 10-yard shot inside the left post to tie it at 1-1.
But the Red Devils went back in front with 2:53 to go. Junior forward Jackie Blake had a shot blocked in front, but she got the ball back and fired the rebound into the upper left corner.
“Our midfielders won a lot of tackles, which was key in keeping possession,” Swade said. “But we can do better. It wasn’t our best effort.”
First-year Hinsdale Central coach Bryan Ciesiulka, a former pro soccer player who starred on two state trophy-winning teams at Neuqua Valley, concurred.
“That’s what we’re trying to do -- relentless defending and then when we get the ball make the other team chase,” Ciesiulka said. “That’s kind of the goal. I think we did it at times today, but when we weren’t doing it we were getting scored on.”
Unlike last year, the Red Devils did a good job of stringing passes together. Cole and Arnold were especially good at combining, but the Tigers played tough defense and began to turn the tide midway through the second half.
Grant rejuvenated the visitors when she scored on a 30-yard rocket with 20:32 to play. Swade put the Red Devils back in front eight minutes later, but Grant tied it again 59 seconds later when she got loose in the box and scored on a 12-yard shot that cut right-to-left.
The Tigers had the Red Devils on their heels in the final five minutes. McKenna Kalina’s 34-yard free kick sailed wide of the left post with 3:20 remaining and Thornton had possession of the ball in the box when the final horn sounded.
“We showed a lot of character today being down three times and answering back three times,” Plainfield North coach Steve Berry said. “We pressed right to the end, pushing to get a goal.
“It was great for us to get a game like this so early in the season against a quality team. We’re excited.”
So is Ciesiulka, who is busy blending the young players from last year’s team with the returning club players, many of whom played on Hinsdale Central’s 2016 team that reached the sectional final.
“The one thing that we like to say is we have one group now,” Ciesiulka said. “It doesn’t matter where they came from or if they played last year.
“We are very confident in the 25 girls that we have, and I think it’s exciting. There’s a lot to learn from the game today, but we’re still putting it together. These girls haven’t played with each other a lot, so we’re getting them together, and I think it will get better as we go.”
The Tigers feel the same way about their prospects.
“(We need to work on) finding outside players and then (having) them going in(side),” Grant said. “I think we could be really dominant there.
“We have a couple really dominant players so if we come together and play as a team I think we can go far.”
Berry, who also coaches the Plainfield North boys team, is in his first year at the helm of the girls squad after taking over for Jane Crowe, who started the program in 2007 and went 175-52-14 in 11 seasons.
“We’ll look to build,” Berry said. “I’m excited to be a part of a good group of kids that don’t even really know that they have a ton of potential -- that they can compete and play with teams are extremely good.”
