Reavis hits pothole on road to league title
Rams suffer 3-2 loss at Tinley Park that may flatten league hopes
By Steve Millar
TINLEY PARK – Reavis rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits in Thursday’s road match, but the Rams could not mount a third comeback, resulting in a crucial conference loss.
Senior midfielder Morgan Sniegolski finished with two goals and an assist to lift host Tinley Park to a 3-2 win over Reavis in a South Suburban Conference cross-over match.
“My team was so passive,” Reavis coach Phil Basile said. “They did not look like they were interested in playing a physical game. We were playing against a team that was looking to compete for every 50-50 ball and step into every ball, and we were on our heels a lot.
“It came down to physicality and mental toughness, and I think we lacked both. Skill-wise, I think we matched up fine. It was just a matter of not getting the pieces to click, so it’s frustrating.”
Sophomore Sylwia Rzadkosz gave Reavis (10-7-1, 5-2-1 Red Division) a much-needed lift when she got a pass from Litzy Corona and took a quick shot from 35 yards that tucked under the crossbar to tie the game 2-2 with 25:12 to go.
“We just needed that goal to tie it,” Rzadkosz said. “We were pushing really hard to get it.”
It was the 10th goal of the season for Rdazkosz, and Basile was happy to see her pull the trigger from a distance.
“I put a lot of burden on Sylwia’s shoulders with what I expect from her as a sophomore,” Basile said. “Sylwia needs to have that confidence to finish. I was proud to see her take that shot.”
The tie was short-lived, however.
Sniegolski, Chicagoland Soccer’s MVP of the Match, had the final answer for Tinley Park (5-6-1, 3-3-1 Blue Division).
Freshman midfielder Emma Goyola won a battle for the ball near the corner flag and quickly centered the ball to Sniegolski, who ripped in the game-winner with 8:08 to go to help the Titans snap a three-game losing streak.
“We’ve kind of been in a rut lately, but we’re a super young team, and we’re starting to click better,” Sniegolski said. “We’re working hard every single day in practice, and I think we were ready for this game.”
Goyola and Sniegolski also connected on the Titans’ first goal of the day as Sniegolski finished off a nice give-and-go in the 15th minute.
“We moved Emma up-top to try to get some more offensive movement,” Sniegolski said. “Me and her work really well together. I passed her the ball and felt like she was going to get it back to me, so I made that run, she passed it back, and I was able to put it in.”
Corona’s 15th goal of the season tied it for Reavis in the 27th minute. The junior midfielder took a pass from Arlette Hernandez, sprinted down the left side and went top shelf for the equalizer.
The Titans, though, took their second lead with 32:27 to go when Lauren Newton broke open down the middle of the field and scored off Sniegolski’s pass.
Tinley Park coach Pete Sansone was thrilled to see his team generate more offense.
“We were definitely in a funk that we needed to get out of,” he said. “We’ve been working a lot on trying to get better looks in the offensive third. We wanted to get our midfielders more involved in the offensive push, and we got all our goals from them today. So, I was really happy to see that.
“I think this will be big for us mentally. I think our girls were getting sunk down a little bit, so now that we’ve gotten over this hump, we can get back on track.”
Reavis, meanwhile, will look to regroup.
“It was disappointing we lost in the end,” Rzadkosz said. “We’ve got to work harder next time. They were just more physical than us.
“We’ve got to be more aggressive. We’ve got to be more focused and motivated. We know we could’ve won this game.”
Briana Silva made four saves for the Rams.
Basile was left frustrated by Reavis’ missed chances on the offensive end.
Corona banged a shot off the crossbar, and Kim Marquez fired high on the rebound in one first half sequence.
Rzadkosz fired wide, and Marquez missed high later in the half.
Sam Tuuk made three saves for Tinley Park.
“We need to finish,” Basile said. “You can chalk it up to inexperience, but by this time of the year the girls have to figure out how to put it in the back of the net. You’ve got to have that competitiveness in the front of the net where you take it upon yourself to make something happen.
“We can’t have girls just sitting back and looking for a handful of players to do everything for the team. That’s what it seems like we have happening a lot of the time.”
With the loss, Reavis no longer controls its own destiny in the Red Division race. The Rams play at league leader Eisenhower (5-1 in conference) on Tuesday but will now need some help even with a win.
“Having this loss puts us at a huge disadvantage,” Basile said. “It’s a very deflating game. In some regards, you want to have a short memory after a game like this, but you also have to learn from it.”
The Rams will go back to work with a nonconference game Saturday against Hancock serving as a tune-up for the Eisenhower showdown.
“I’ve got a long list of things to work on in practice (Friday),” Basile said. “We’ll try to regroup Saturday, work on some of those things from practice and try to apply it to Tuesday’s game.”
