Deerfield feels the heat vs. Sandburg
Eagles win 3-1 over Warriors in Kickoff Classic play

DEERFIELD -- Sandburg’s 3-1 win over Deerfield on Saturday saw the Eagles play with skill, cohesion, and a third quality that made as much difference as any, and maybe more.
“I think they definitely had the physical edge today,” Deerfield senior Marissa Hyland said. “We came out maybe not expecting that they’d be that intense. There were a lot of fouls, and I don’t think we expected that type of game.”
Saturday’s game in Deerfield was part of Wheaton North's Kickoff Classic and both teams headed into it without a loss.
Sandburg (3-0-1) got goals from Kaitlyn Mathas, Margaret Manthey, and Katherine Barrios to remain unbeaten. Megan David scored the lone goal for Deerfield (2-1-0).
“I’ve been on this team since my freshman year, and I truly think this is the best team I’ve been on out of all four years,” Sandburg senior forward Maddie Manzke said. “We haven’t been this good for a long time.”
Through the game’s first 10 minutes, Deerfield located the game’s best scoring chances as the Warriors put the Eagles back on their heels.
Just three minutes into the game, Deerfield forward Julia Neal spun around a defender at the top of the box and laid a ball off to Hyland on the left side. Hyland’s shot was deflected over the endline by the lone defender back.
Sandburg keeper Molly Fischer saved scoring chances taken by the Warriors’ Holly Deutsch and Mallori Killoren to the 13th minute, and to that point Deerfield held the lion’s share of the attack.
“We didn’t finish the couple (early) chances we had,” Deerfield coach Rich Grady said, “and we paid for it.”
Hyland agreed that momentum swung after Deerfield’s early promise. “After that, they just kind of wore us down,” she said.
Sandburg’s attack came to life from there to halftime. Deerfield keeper Carolyn Curley charged off her line to destroy plays, smother potential shots, and gather dangerous through-balls on six dangerous Sandburg scoring chances to keep the game scoreless to intermission.
But with Sandburg forwards Manzke and Arienne Kate Monteclar wreaking havoc, and midfielders Ella Hase and Bella Corluka shining at midfield, the Eagles took control of the game’s momentum.
Hase’s role as an attacking mid and Corluka’s prowess as a defensive mid keyed the turnaround, and earned them co-Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honors.
“We all know how to connect even though we have a lot of freshmen, which is crazy because they’re all stepping up to the plate,” Manzke said. “Everyone is working together, and everyone is super positive. And we just keep getting better and better.”
Deerfield answered the challenge to start the second half. Killoren took a ball around a defender and into the box at 41 minutes and sent a ball ahead to Neal, who split two defenders and fired a shot saved by Fischer.
The Warriors sent a pair of free kicks into the box to the 45th minute that the Eagles cleared out, before the Sandburg attack again took prominence.
Deerfield defender Shayna Wood raced back to destroy danger on the foot of Monteclar at 46 minutes and Curley saved a Deutsch shot a minute later.
Sandburg struck at 50 minutes when Mathas got on the end of an Erin O'Connor free kick and tucked a shot inside the right post from 18 yards.
Deerfield answered when Killoren reached the endline on the right side, centered a pass, and the ball squirted to open space near the top of the Eagles’ box. David had time to measure and tee it up, sending a shot to the upper ninety at the right post to tie the game.
“I thought Megan David had a nice goal today,” Grady said. “This was her first game starting for us, and that was nice to see.”
The tie lasted five minutes. Monteclar took a ball deep into the box on the left side and sent a cross to Manthey, who buried it from point-blank range at 57 minutes. Barrios scored past a charging Curley in the game’s waning minutes for the game’s final goal.
Sandburg has now won three-straight tournament games against Deerfield, Glenbard West and Lemont since a season-opening tie with Plainfield East. The Eagles have only given up two goals in four games.
Central defenders O’Connor and Rose Marie Richardson have helped key a stalwart defensive effort.
“Erin and Rosie are both freshmen and every game, they’re playing really tough and strong,” Kubowoicz said. “They have anchored our defense, and they have not disappointed.
“We’re ahead of where I thought we’d be at this point. We have a lot of new girls, and I didn’t think they’d be playing this well together as a unit this early on.
They’re really coming together nicely.”
Deerfield went into Saturday’s game on the heels of a 2-1 comeback win over Wheaton North. The Warriors beat Antioch in the their season-opener.
“Some of our younger players have really stepped up and done well,” Grady said. “We missed one of them today — Riley Schimanski was out, and she scored our game-winning goal the other night against Wheaton North. So that hurt our midfield.”
Killoren and Mallory Sawyer have keyed the Warriors’ midfield play, and both were prominent Saturday.
“Mallory Sawyer seemed to be picking herself up off the turf every five minutes or so,” Grady said. “But she’s a battler. She’s very scrappy.
“(Sandburg) moved the ball well, they’re physical, and they stretched us apart. We didn’t react the way we wanted to react. They played better than we did, but we’ll be back at it Monday.”
Deerfield plays four games in four days starting Monday against Round Lake, followed by Glenbard West, Grayslake North, and Benet.
“This is kind of a new team,” Hyland said. “We haven’t all played together, but we’re starting to mesh and getting the feel of everyone playing together.
“This wasn’t our best game, but I think this season is going to be amazing. Everyone individually is very good, and we just need to learn how each player plays and their style of play.”
