Marist scoring outburst stuns Saint Viator Lions never recover from 3-goal flurry in 1st half, fall 5-2
By Steve Millar
CHICAGO – Saint Viator spent most of the first 20 minutes of Saturday’s game at Marist knocking on the door for the first goal.
The Lions couldn’t break through, however. The RedHawks, on the other hand, broke the door down and ran through it repeatedly.
Marist, which prior to Wednesday had just one victory on the season, won its second-straight East Suburban Catholic Conference match, rolling to a 5-2 win at home over Saint Viator.
“It’s funny because we dominated the first 15 minutes, but we don’t seem to be able to finish the opportunities that we create at the beginning of the game,” Saint Viator coach Byron DeLeon said. “That cost us in this game.
“Do I think they were that much better than us overall for the game? I don’t think so. I think we were pretty much even. But they were able to finish their chances, and we didn’t. That’s soccer. Whoever comes out ready to take over is the team that’s normally going to win.”
Marist (3-13-3, 3-3-2) scored three times in a span of less than six minutes late in the first half to leave the Lions (8-8-0, 3-4-0) reeling.
The RedHawks broke through first in the 28th minute on a nice combination play as Quinn Richards sent a pass to Christian Chavez down the left side of the field. Chavez centered the ball to Danny Olsen in front of the goal, and Olsen buried his shot from in-close.
“Danny always gives us a boost,” Marist’s Christian Bedgood said. “When we get the first goal, that sets the mentality for the rest of the game.”
On the opposite side, the mentality was also set – in a negative way.
“The first goal on the scoreboard always affects us if we’re not the ones who get it,” DeLeon said. “It brings the morale down a little bit on the guys.”
With momentum on its side, Marist struck again a little more than two minutes later.
Olsen played a pass to Chavez, who slipped the ball to Bedgood. Bedgood ripped in a shot from 15 yards.
It was the first goal of the season and the second of his career for Bedgood, a sophomore midfielder.
“I’ve been waiting the whole season to get my first goal,” Bedgood said. “It finally happened. Without my teammates, it wouldn’t have happened.”
Bedgood, the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match, struck again three minutes later. After Chavez was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick, Bedgood converted to make it 3-0.
“I had one goal my freshman year and none this year before this game,” Bedgood said. “Scoring two goals (Saturday), more than I had in my career before this, really helps a lot going into the playoffs.”
Saint Viator tried to fight back in the second half.
Senior midfielder Michael McManaman came off the bench and delivered in the 48th minute when he headed in a free kick from Reilly Salatino.
“Reilly kicked the ball in, it knocked off someone and came to me, and I just headed it in,” McManaman said. “It felt good to score and help us try to come back.”
It was the first goal of the season for McManaman, who tries to provide a spark when he comes in as a reserve.
“I just want to keep fighting for a win all the time,” McManaman said.
DeLeon was pleased with the way his substitutes played Saturday.
“We had a lot of good efforts and good performances from the guys who came off the bench,” DeLeon said. “They rose to the occasion and played well.”
Any momentum the Lions built toward a rally was short-lived, however.
Marist made it 4-1 when Olsen collected a loose ball on the left side of the field, shook off a defender with a quick spin move and then ripped a rocket of a shot inside the far post from 25 yards with 24:35 to go.
Then, Chavez’s speed gave Saint Viator problems again as he drew a foul in the box for the second time.
This time, he kept the penalty kick for himself and converted to give the RedHawks a 5-1 edge.
“Christian Chavez had a big day,” Marist coach Sean Maxwell said. “Him and Danny have been playing really well lately.”
The RedHawks were coming off a 4-3 win over Joliet Catholic on Wednesday to end a six-game winless streak.
“I’m proud of the boys,” Maxwell said. “It’s been a long season. We’ve been waiting for everything to jell. I knew there’d be some growing pains. I didn’t know it was going to be more like growing aches and pains.
“But I feel like the guys are starting to see what we’re trying to do. We still made some mistakes in the backline that we have to clean up. It helps when we see the ball into the back of the net five times, though.”
Saint Viator did not go down without a bit more of a fight.
In the 75th minute, Taylor Petrillo broke behind the defense but had his shot stopped by Marist goalkeeper Max Perez.
Cristobal Carranza, though, was there to poke in the rebound to give the Lions their final goal.
Carranza started in back but moved up to try to provide an offensive spark.
“Carranza usually plays defense,” DeLeon said. “We changed the formation to try to create more offense, brought him back in off the bench and put him at outside mid and he came through.
“Putting the two goals in in the second half to get on the scoreboard was a positive, but it was a tough loss.”
As far as McManaman is concerned, it all goes back to the Lions’ reaction to conceding the first goal of the match.
“Our mentality, after the first goal, we lost it,” McManaman said. “We have to fix that. We have to work on fighting with all we’ve got.
“Going forward, we have to stay calm. We tend to get really hyped up and then make mistakes.”
DeLeon said he may tweak the Lions’ formation or make some lineup changes with the playoffs right around the corner. Time is short.
“I’m hoping we’ll be able to turn this around in the playoffs,” DeLeon said.
