Waubonsie Valley blanks
St. Francis for 1st win
Warriors, Spartans have a busy week in Plainfield Classic
By Curt Herron
PLAINFIELD -- After going 0-5-2 against squads with a combined 32-13-6 record, including four that are currently ranked in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, Waubonsie Valley set its sights on collecting its first win when it met St. Francis on Monday in a pool play match in the Plainfield Classic.
Thanks to a goal late in the first half, two more in the second and a stout defense, the Warriors not only were able to claim their initial victory but also recorded a shutout with a 3-0 triumph over the Spartans in a match that was played at Plainfield North, the host school of the Classic.
Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match senior Zach Stanley assisted junior Gean Riberio Scarpell on a goal in the 31st minute and then scored in the 46th minute following an assist from freshman Lachlan Ladd to give Waubonsie Valley the boost that it needed. Junior Matthew Garcia capped the scoring in the 77th minute.
"I'm really proud of our boys and their persistence," said Warriors coach Jose Garcia, whose squad hosts Metea Valley tonight in a DuPage Valley Conference match.
"We have not had a good start to the season but this win really helps with confidence. We played well as a team and look to continue this trend going forward."
The Warriors defense of seniors Kadin Feese and Callum Keller and freshmen Amiel Nichani and Cade Valek played throughout and limited the number of stops that senior goalkeeper Jason Michalek had to make against the Spartans (2-6-1), who took full advantage of the match to get significant playing time for all of the players they brought.
"This was an all-around team effort," Keller said. "A win is everything to us. We had a couple of ties so getting a result for the first time this season in eight games is huge and is going to give our team a world of confidence. I like our positive attitude and creative energy. Everything about this team is creative and passionate, so that makes it fun to play.
"My coach is huge on playing most of the game and keeping your stamina so it was huge for us to play the whole game. We have two freshmen and two seniors, so me and my buddy Kadin are role models for Amiel and Cade.
“We want to make an impact on them and keep Waubonsie defending alive as we graduate, and they play the next few years."
This started a busy week for both squads. St. Francis will play at least five matches through Saturday's final day of play in the tournament, which continues on Thursday. Waubonsie Valley will hit the pitch at least four times for the week plus has games next week on Monday and Tuesday.
Waubonsie Valley had several good chances before finally connecting. Stanley had a try stopped by keeper St. Francis Simon Hartle while Keller, Stanley and Riberio Scarpell were just a bit wide or high of the mark on threatening attempts.
The Warriors finally connected in the 31st minute when Alan Sanchez started a scoring sequence with a pass to Stanley. He delivered a cross to Riberio Scarpell, who was able to connect from close range.
"It's always great to get a win," Riberio Scarpell said."We were rough in the first five minutes but fortunately we got that first goal. The communication today was really good. In the mid and in the back we communicated really good, and that's why we got the clean sheet and won 3-0."
Waubonsie Valley continued to apply pressure during the late stages of the first half. Owen Cousins was denied on two tries, and Ladd was thwarted by the Spartans keeper.
Waubonsie Valley greeted new St. Francis keeper Cameron Crawford with good attempts from Stanley and Joseph Haddad in the opening minute of the final half. The Warriors collected their second goal in the 46th minute when Ladd sent a pass to Stanley and his close-range shot bounced off the post and in.
Before the match reached its 100th minute, St. Francis got good attempts from Alexander Guha and Trey Klein while their opponents countered with threatening shots by Angel Gallegos, Anuj Buch and Feese.
Waubonsie Valley kept the pressure up the rest of the way, getting solid chances from Yahir Rodriguez, Garcia, Buch, Feese and Keller before concluding the scoring in the 77th minute when Rodriguez hit the post and Garcia got to the rebound and put in a short shot.
"Today is my mother's birthday and right before the match, I promised that I would get either an assist or a goal," Garcia said. "I wasn't too sure about scoring a goal myself, but the pieces really fit together perfectly with Yahir and me. She was smiling a lot about that.
"What I like the most about the team is the experience with each other. On the field, I just like the chemistry that we have with each other. With the through-balls, it's like we foresee the future; it's amazing."
St. Francis plays Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division home matches against Riverside-Brookfield tonight and IC Catholic Prep on Wednesday and meets Lincoln-Way West at Plainfield South on Thursday before concluding the Plainfield tournament Saturday.
The Spartans put a lot of young players on the field throughout the second half who don't have much varsity experience, but they battled hard and hung tough with the Warriors. Coach Jim Winslow was pleased with their efforts.
"It was great for the younger kids to come out and play," he said. "They got to play minutes against varsity kids, so when you talk to them and say, 'Hey, you need to do this and work on that and you remember when?' now you have something to refer back to, so that was nice.
"It wasn't a work of art, but they played hard. For some of the younger kids this is important for down the road, since some of them are freshmen and sophomores, They need to realize how fast the game is; that it's a whole different speed."
Waubonsie Valley completes its weekly schedule in Plainfield Classic action at Oswego on Thursday and at a site to be determined Saturday.
