CPL playoffs quarterfinal slot in dispute
By Dave Surico
All is not well with Pool G in the Chicago Public League playoffs.
Because of several issues, Hancock and Sullivan do not know who will advance to play Washington in the 11 a.m. Saturday quarterfinal at Goode Stem Academy.
The schools played in what should have been the deciding pool game Thursday.
According to Hancock coach Froylan Jimenez, the problems started when the referees decided to use a running clock for the game, contrary to CPL rules. After the schools battled to a 1-1 draw, the game went to a shootout, which also does not conform to league rules.
If the game result is allowed to stand, Hancock, which won 5-3 in PKs, would advance. If the game is called a draw, another situation arises for Hancock.
Both teams defeated Maria in a prior pool game, but Sullivan won 6-1 compared to Hancock's 2-0 score. That would give Sullivan the tiebreaker on goal differential.
However, according to JImenez, the referees ended Hancock's game with Maria approximately 25 minutes before time when an altercation broke out on the field at Pasteur Park and the refs called the game due to an "invasion of the field" rule. That prevented Hancock the ability to attempt to add to its goal differential.
Both schools hope for clarification from the league administrator Friday according to Jimenez and Sullivan athletic director Gregory Zagorski.
