Chicagoland Soccer
Illinois girls varsity statistics
In an attempt to recognize all the great achievements on the high school pitches throughout Illinois this past late winter and spring, Chicagoland Soccer is extremely proud to present its first girls state statistical listing.
Like Chicagoland Soccer's All-State Team, Special Mention, All-State Watch List, polls, Class AA and 3A state finals coverage and MVP of the Match recognition, the list was open to all Illinois high school varsity players and teams.
The abundance of information was compiled through the dogged efforts of Steve Nemeth, who contacted every head coach in Illinois who had an email listed on the school pages of the IHSA website. If a coach's name was missing or an email was returned addressee unknown, Nemeth sent at least one additional email to the school athletic director. He re-emailed coaches who didn't initially respond in an effort to make the statistics all-inclusive.
In addition, he scoured the internet for reports and contacted newspapers and soccer writers in an effort to try to make sure no eligible players were missed or statistical info was lacking. Patrick McGavin's research for the all-state teams is also included in the final product, which includes information from Chicagoland Soccer writers.
The girls lists this year come with the addition of goalkeeper statistics. Nemeth, an erstwhile associate sports information director at Northern Illinois University, warned of the dangers of the inclusion of these stats especially goals against average, which he noted is only correctly presented when it factors in minutes played.
We forged ahead with a stat based primarily on goals against vs. games played to get a number for comparison.
We thank our member coaches and all other coaches who sent information to Chicagoland Soccer. We appreciate your help which we know only adds to the many demands of your teaching and coaching duties. The fact will never change that prep coverage hinges upon the great communication and reams of information media outlets receive from educator/head coaches and their assistants.
The Chicagoland Soccer stat package strived to be all-inclusive, but we know our efforts will fall short of that. Still, we are proud of this intensive undertaking and hope you will find it as interesting as we did. We also hope that players who wish to play in college will be able to use this information to achieve their goal.
The offensive category lists were gleaned from more than 350 field players from 168 schools, which included 123 Class 3A players, 107 Class AA players and 119 Class A performers. The 84 goalkeepers from 82 schools included 37 from Class 3A, 26 from Class AA and 21 from Class A.
For comparative purposes, the boys scoring list from last fall featured 235 players.
